First came that little movie about Greek Americans. Now Joey and Maria are getting married -- and the entire Jewish community is invited. Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services is throwing "A Big Fat Italian Wedding" on March 1 to raise money for its Presidents Club, a group that helps troubled teens through dinners, sporting events and awards nights.
"It's okay to have a good time while we do some good," co-chair Mitch Gaylord said. Like the Broadway show, "Tony and Tina's Wedding,"the evening will take attendees through an Italian wedding of comic proportions and big portions, with a full-fledged wedding ceremony, dinner and dancing.
The organization hopes to attract 250 guests to the event in order to increase Presidents Club involvement.
"We're looking to open up people's minds about helping other people," said Janis Black, the event's other co-chair.
According to the invitation, the recipe for happiness in this cultural comedy is "Marry an Italian boy, have Italian babies and feed everyone!"
