Tiger Woods and the Race Obsessed

A few years back, Tiger Woods appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s popular day-time television show and told the host that he considered himself “Cablinasian,” something he’d awkwardly concocted to make a point.  Tiger insisted that his Caucasian, black, American Indian, and Asian heritage defied the simplistic color-coded racial logic that the government as well as the arbiters of racial authenticity demand we all fit into.

This hasn’t prevented many from hijacking the tawdry Tigergate scandal for their own racial reasoning.  Despite Tiger defining his ethnic identity otherwise, many insist there’s no escape from the racial reservation and that he’s black – no matter what he has to say. 

Tom Joyner, the country’s most-listened-to black radio personality, made Tiger the butt of his jokes – as have many of the nation’s late-night comics.  But Joyner and other black voices put a racial spin on the evolving scandal.  He said, “The question everyone in America wants to ask you (Tiger) is, how many white women does one brother waaant?”

While fascinated with celebrities and titillated by the tawdry nature of Tiger’s private life, most American’s appear to have little interest in the skin-color aspect of this story.  This isn’t the question that being asked by most people, but it is the question that race-obsessed people are asking.

Many Americans are rejecting skin-color as legitimate criteria for dating and matrimonial decisions.  In fact, while some may be focused on same-race relations, Americans have been doing a lot of “mixing” over the last several decades. And other than the diminishing numbers of white supremacists and other racialists of various sorts, kinds and skin colors, few care one way or the other about the increasing number of “mixed” couples in our midst.

Most simply see Tiger Woods as an amazingly talented athlete, one who fell prey to fame, power and the arrogance of celebrity.  He joins the ranks of other shamed public figures like David Letterman, the late-night television host, John Edwards, the former presidential candidate, and Mark Sanford, the Governor of South Carolina (whose wife just announced she’s kicking his sorry butt to the curb).

Nonetheless, some appear compelled to insert themselves into the private lives of others.  Denene Millner, a black female author, said, “Why is it when they get to this level … they tend to go directly for the nearest blond.”  “They” are of course black celebrities and athletes.  A better question is why does she think it’s her business to question the highly-personal choices people make in selecting their bed-mates – in or out of marriage? 

And what would this woman suggest as a corrective mechanism for what she appears to think is inappropriate racial behavior – the re-insertion of Jim Crow era anti-miscegenation laws?

To put a finer point on this - why is it that we give someone like her a pass when she asserts essentially that the only correct choice for a black man is a woman who shares his skin color?  The “stick with your own kind” racial reasoning is precisely what America’s white supremacists and racial alarmists have argued since pre-civil rights days.

The Associated Press wrote a story on the Tiger Woods scandal which quoted one black women who said that “had Barack Obama had a white wife, I would have thought twice about voting for him.”

There you have it … the old bugaboo of racial authenticity raises its ugly head. Despite Obama’s biracial heritage, she and others seem prepared to argue that real black men only sleep with “sisters.” Truth be told, Tiger Woods was always viewed with suspicion by the black race police because he’d refused an orthodox racial identity and married a Swedish swimsuit model.

There’s no doubt Woods is a scoundrel, a fallen hero with a flawed character who deserves most of the scorn that’s been heaped upon him.  However, other than a raised-eyebrow over the “hoochi-mama” aspect of it all, the skin or hair color of his women of choice have no rightful role in this sorry episode.

Forty-five years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, there is a great deal of irony in the fact that there are some who continue to uphold some of the worst aspects of pre-civil rights America – and laughably believe it to be some sort of “progressive black politics.”

Joe your article is excellent. I was born, and am, a true blonde of nordic heritage, like Tiger’s beautiful wife Elin. However, I was always attracted to dark skinned Indian boys when I was younger, and was never attracted to fair-haired fellas, no matter how nice they were! I also had strong innate leanings to the native community from the time I was small. It wasn’t until I was older that we found out my Dad was one quarter native. Although a smaller part of my heritage, it seems to be the one that dominates at times. The fact that Tiger is attracted to fair skinned women doesn’t surprise me in the least as I understand he has Dutch ancestry from his mother’s side.

It doesn’t really matter to me though.  Who he is attracted to is nobody’s business but Tiger’s, and his wife. Why we are the way we are, or why we are attracted to certain people will always be a mystery. It seems to me that some people in the black community plays the race card far too often. They are so big on ownership issues of race. But really it’s getting old.

Tiger’s behaviour has certainly been horrendous, but I don’t know that he ever presented himself to be a holy man. I hope him and his family sort this out and he emerges a better person.

First off, as far as your judgment on the Black woman who said that athletes go out in get a blonde, well that’s a deceptive perception that she has because it just isn’t true.

Race became a issue because Tiger made an issue separate himself from both his Asian and Black side because he thinks that associating himself as being White is better. And that’s very sad and not because he married a Swedish nanny. And let’s be real he probably wouldn’t have looked twice at a Black nanny/babysitter and that’s not playing the race card. As far as blacks always playing the race card that is one of the most ignorant statements coined in the past 15 years. It it’s usually spoken by people who actually live in a LaLa Land where they don’t think that race matters because they really don’t have an inclination how race affects attitudes, preferences,judgments etc.

Having said that I hope they leave these people alone. He’s not the Pope. He owes himself, his sponsors, and his family an apology not the rest of the world. When will people stop idolizing celebrities and athletes as if they are give moral direction for our culture and even our children.If people want to emulate anything from Tiger or anyone else it should be his drive and work ethic and that’s it.

And if you think that Blacks have the worst perceptions and attitudes about race than that really explains a lot about yourself. You are using quotes from Blacks about race as if they speak for the whole race. It’s like saying one Jewish guy speaks for all Jews. Or Rush Limbaugh speaks for all White men.

It’s funny, I asked the question. Where are all the sister’s. ok forget that, what about the educated, articulate, wealthy women that could have really made a difference in Tiger’s life. Or his wife’s life. The only thing that Tiger Wood’s wanted was to screw anything and everything he could.. Which tells me he is a jerk and a complete A hole. I hope his wife get another grip and beat the hell out of him again… He has no respect for women or himself..Oh and by the way, race has nothing whatsoever to do with respect!! IT’S A CHOICE!

It doesn’t really apply to Tiger because he’s only 1/4 black, and a bigger question is why he’s referred to by the media as an african american, and the first african american to win the masters, when in truth he’s twice as much asian as he is black. But, no one in the media says Tiger is the first asian to win the masters or ever refers to him as asian. This is from back in the day when being a little black made you all black and you faced the wrath of segregation - the fact that the media still perpetuates this is a form of institutionalized racism that goes unnoticed in this country. Just like Obama is referred to by the media as being black and not white.

As far as successful black athletes having a pattern to prefer blondes, that does sting a black woman. Since at that point of success a man can afford the best of everything, from liquor, clothes, cars, and it seems when the go to the trophy woman and pick a white aryan blue eyed blonde as if they’re superior, it’s counter productive to the ascension of black folks in the society at large. It sells their own people short.

when most people look at tiger they see a black man. it really doesn’t matter what he calls himself. a black man who looks white can call himself black but it doesn’t work in reverse. tiger father new he was black, pretty sure he didnt walk around calling himself multi-racial in the 60’s. he was took ethnic looking to pass back in the good ole days. in the black community there are tons of people who are lighter, have straighter hair and keener features than tiger in my family alone, with 2 “black” parents. african americans look like tiger woods in general. that’s why his avoidance of his true “african american” heritage is such a slap in the face. Obama gets it. he has more “white blood” than tiger. you don’t see him calling himself cau-black. heck i probably have more “white” blood than tiger…

Sasha, it is unclear if you are speaking generally or addressing the article or my post specifically. So many people skim text but don’t actually READ every word. No one generalized their perspective onto ALL black people in either the article or comments. In my own posting I specifically stated “some”. That’s a heck of alot different than a sweeping statement. But I’m only going from the tone of your posting which comes across as pretty defensive. Relax and take a chill pill. For such a progressive country, the US sometimes seems so backwards.

Joshua: your comments highlight something very important. I caught the Tiger interview years back. It was Oprah who kept pressing the race issue on Tiger. Not surprising since Oprah has said “it’s a black thing you wouldn’t understand”. At the time, Tiger kept being told he looked African-American so therefore the idea was that he owed it to the black community to embrace that part of his identity. What a ridiculous thing to force on someone. I mean it’s like Scottish people claiming ownership to Tiger because he’s playing their game.

As for black athletes having a penchance for blondes, I’d like to see some actual data. Why doesn’t someone go through every “successful black athlete” and come up with a tally beyond initial assumptions?

This is the kind of comment that would make Jesse Jackson so proud. What a load of hooey. If that’s the kind of thing selling black people short, my God their truly is no hope for America or the human race. Nauseatingly old stuff. When I was in college “some” Asian women like to nab a white guy as a kind of status symbol. All the power to them. If it turns them on I’m not losing any sleep over it. By the way they tend to have gorgeous kids. Welcome to the 21st century America.

How Tiger sees himself racially or conducts himself, outside of criminal activity, is none of our darn business.

-No, but he did trade on his image as a dedicated family man concerned only with the well being of his golf game and his wife and kids (if you don’t believe that, look at his own promo video for his first US golf course project, and things he has said in repsonse to questions about his fmaily life on his own website).

In any case, great article; I saw that article referred to in this one by Denene Miller and about threw-up. If Pat Buchanan or any other white perosn had written a similar article, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be picketing his house and calling for him to be fired, etc…yet, Denene Miller gets a pass because of the racial double standard that pertains in this race-obsessed country. As an aside, I think the AP comment you quoted alos explains, at bottom, the whole Clarence Thomas sage back in 1991…he wasn’t “racially pure” enough for the militant racialist because he’s married to a white woman.

Funny, I’m a Southerner, yet the only negative comments I’ve seen regarding Wood’s or Thomas’ marriages to white women have come from blacks (mostly black women) who resent their being supposed “traitors” to thier racial “sisters”!

The author of this piece is obviously delusional. Of course, this Tiger Woods controversy has EVERYTHING to do with race. I doubt the white media in the USA would care if Woods cheated on his wife with black or Asian women. The reason this story is so salacious is BECAUSE Woods has a preference for white blondes. And it is a fair question black critics have asked why is Woods filled with so much self hate? The white media have hung Woods now. Woods thought that if he slept with white women and married one he would GAIN WHITE PRIVILEGE. The truth is the sex scandal has PROVEN the white media NEVER saw Woods as ONE OF THEM he was always viewed as a nigger.

Whatever, Tiger Woods is DARKER SKINNED than Barack Obama. However, you don’t see Obama having the same self hate issues that Tiger Woods has. Tiger Woods is very dark skinned the man doesn’t even look Asian. Tiger Woods also has a lot of self hate issues he needs to see a psychotherapist.

RACE??? What does that ever have to do with anything.  I have no problem saying he is the best golfer among his peers and probably ever.  I do believe there was more concentration of top golfers in the Nicklaus, Trevino, Palmer, etc era.  I don’t claim to an expert in golf history but I have golfed at a high level for 42 years now and have always had a passion for watching and learning as well as playhing.
Soooo, since Tiger has hit the Pro golf scene, his actions on the course show his true personality, ie. slamming his clubs, swearing on camera, outbursts (all on camera).  And since he is supposed to be the world’s best athlete and role model (once you hit the profile status he has, being a role model is not a choice), I feel he has not lived up to it.  Sure other golfers have shown emotion, but not on the level and consistancy as Tiger.  This is the only reason I have never liked Tiger.  And now he is proving what he truly like.
And if we want to talk about the RACE issue, I see it as those that scream RACISM are the truly RACISTS.

Earl Woods: Point well taken on my horrendous comment. I do not actively watch golf. Assuming that you do, I’ll default to your perspective on that one.

James: grow a racial backbone. America will never be able to grow up racially with people like you walking around with chips the size of boulders on your shoulders. You’re looking for conflict obviously and need this to be it a racial issue. I really feel sorry for you. You’re missing out on a world of friendships with people with an attitude like that. Don’t be so hard hearted. By the way, as someone who lives among an area with many Asian people, Tiger looks for more Asian to some of us than he does black. But really who cares? The world’s a great big rainbow honey. It seems you must know Tiger personally to be able to state his perspective as if it is fact. White this, white that. Like enough already. Get out into the world. You’ll find racism of blacks against blacks in Africa, Arabs against blacks, Asians against other Asians, Scots against the English…I mean give it a rest. God created a world of beautiful people. Last I checked we’re all breathing the same air and bleeding the same red ink. The fact is: this story happened during the slowest news period of the year, not to mention people salivate to see the mighty fall.

Tiger Woods being only 1/4 African American? That’s a crock. His father was African American and both of his paternal grandparents were African American. His father claimed to have some mixed Irish and Native American (Indian) ancestry, which is apocryphal at best, as many Black Americans have mixed European and Native American genes, but have no cultural ties to those genes. I have many African American friends who vary in skin color and facial features, who obviously have racial admixture in their genetic line, but all of their known relatives are African American. I myself have apocryphal family information that a great grandparent was Cherokee, but our family has no Native cultural connection and no known Native family linkages. Tiger’s dad did not have any concrete evidence of Irish or Native relative, just stories his Black parents and grandparents told him. So let’s get off this only 1/4 Black farce.

Tiger Woods is 1/2 African American, and 1/2 Asian. He has distanced himself from his African American side because of severe emotional trauma he faced growing up. Read the interview he gave in 1998 where he described his first day of school as a kindergartener. His very first day as a 5 year old, he was tied to a tree by a group of white 12 year-old 6th grade thugs who taunted him with racial slurs and spray painted the word n*gger across his chest. The school did nothing to help him, but sent him home. He talked about how he had to outrun these threatening and name calling kids every day after school. Also, throughout his childhood and while later playing at elite golf venues, he was constantly called a n*gger to his face. His nickname at Stanford was Erkel, as in the nerdy fictional African American sitcom character Steve Erkel.

So let’s stop with PC crap. Tiger Woods has never been discriminated against as an Asian. He has never been called derogatory names aimed at Asians, or faced physical assault as an Asian. It is no wonder he has distanced himself from his African side, considering all the abuse he has faced growing up was aimed squarely at his African heritage.

I’m reminded of the interviews Chris Rock did with the Asian American community regarding Tiger Woods. He took cameras to the International District/China Town in New York and asked Asians on the street whether they saw Tiger as Asian. They all just laughed in his face. It was good comedy.

It was only when Tiger began to dominate the sport and became insanely wealthy that people started highlighting this apocryphal 1/8 Irish 1/8 Native background, his legitimate 1/2 Asian background, and diminishing is African American heritage.

Tiger Woods is 1/2 African American, and 1/2 Asian.

Anyone who says this is either delusional, being intellectually dishonest, or is outright lying.

I lived in Thailand as an exchange student my junior year of college. I also later lived in Hong Kong for five months on a work assignment for my company.

If I saw the 6 foot 1 inch Tiger Woods walking the streets of Bangkok or Hong Kong, I would right away peg him as a Black American. Just like if I saw the 6 foot 1 inch Barack Obama walking these same streets, I would immediately peg him as a Black American.

I met Black tourists in Thailand on several occasions. They were a mix of African Americans and Afro-British. Even one girl was half Korean half Black, however, I initially saw her as a Black girl until getting to know her. Suffice to say, she did not blend in with the Asian population. I could spot a Black person in Thailand from a mile away and usually assumed they were Black Americans until I heard them speak with a British accent.

Check the link below of Tiger with his dad. So I guess these are just two good old Irish, Indian, and Asian guys. You all make me laugh.

If Barack Obama attacked Tiger Woods at a charity golf tournament, would the assault be classified as:

A) Black on Black crime
B) White on Black crime
C) Black on Asian crime
D) White on Asian crime
E) All of the above

The media only cares about this story because it involves White women.

Example: Shaquille O’neal was caught having an affair with Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards fiance! Did mainstream media report it? Nope. Wanna know why? Because it involved Black women! Blogs & “ethnic media” covered the story.

Anytime you have scandals with white women & black men your going to hear about it! Oj Simpson trial, they still talk about this today! Do you think if Nicole & Ron was black it would have got so much attention? NOPE!

But what about ex-nfl player Rae Carruth? He killed his pregnant girlfriend (who was black), sure the media covered it but it died down quickly.

Race has everything to do with Tiger scandal. People in the golf league still cant stand tiger because he broke the mold. He made golf a popular & more ecnomical success. It took some black/asian kid to bring the sport to the masses, not some old white man. & that hurts some people & they have alot of resentment towards tiger even though hes putting soo much more money into their pockets when he shows up to tourneys.

I agree with you about the “look” of Tiger Woods. I found a couple pictures of him standing beside some woman, a stranger I guess, who is Asian. Woods looks absolutely nothing like her. Not to be crude and start scrutinizing the physical features of Woods versus those of this stranger, but the color of their skin is really different. The shape of their eyes, noses, and mouths/teeth is really, really different. Although, the texture of their hair is about the same.

Oh, and thanks for the added clarity with the “assault” classification comment. Add to this the police potentially pulling Woods over, the cabdriver potentially passing him by, and the store clerk potentially following him around. You have to wonder what some people are thinking. Don’t they know that how the ignorant in society will see you and treat you is a healthy and sound foundation on which to base your identity?

How someone sees another person visually is based on their own perception. Since you seem determined to “go there”, obviously Tiger has dark skin, but based on my own personal observations, I see the Asian features that someone else may not see. Think of people like art and get over it. You seem to have anger issues about racial perceptions and ownership of it, thus your defensiveness (or you come across that way). Like who really cares? You clearly miss the point. Everyone sees people based on their own perceptions and personal experiences.  Really how any of us view Tiger is neither here nor there. How “he” views himself is really all that matters; not mine, not yours, nor Kermit the Frog’s opinion.  If he sees himself beyond “just” being black, then that’s the opinion that matters, not all the psychobabble racial analysis you can muster up.

You and those who agree with you do not have the privilege of being inside Tiger’s head. So anything you say is mere speculation. But it’s opinions like these that’ll keep the racial victim wagon wheels turning.

And NOD honey, you clearly haven’t lived around a variety of Asian people based on your slim example. Your stereotypical analysis is laughable at best. It’s about as laughable as the person who thinks someone is white when actually they find out the person is black. All shades and shapes exist dear. By all means keep the divisions and stereotyping going.

What Asian features do you see? You’re lying. I have heard this before and it always makes me laugh. I have heard people say they see “Asian” features in Tiger such as darker skin as some Indians, Filipinos, and Cambodians have, and full lips as some Cambodians have.

LOL! This is a straw man. The Asian ancestry in Tiger is Chinese and Thai. Chinese and Thai people do not look like Tiger Woods, as I have lived in both Thailand and Hong Kong. The skin, lips, nose, hair texture etc… come from his African American father. Tiger has no Cambodian, no Indian, no Filipino genes so that kind of comparison is invalid. It’s a straw man. His Thai/Chinese mother is your average east Asian phenotype, very light complexion.

The pictures NOD posted showing Tiger standing next to an Asian women that’s his MOTHER! LOL! Tiger is 1/2 African American, 1/2 Asian and looks more African American.

Tiger Woods looks BLACK he does NOT look Asian not with his dark skin and kinky curly hair. In America Woods will ALWAYS be seen as a black man regardless of what Woods or his fans think. Why do people think the Woods scandal is big news? It is because white society has a problem with a black man that sleeps with white women.

I know Woods fans are delusional! In the USA Woods is seen as a black man and Woods was MARKETED as a black man. Woods became popular because he was a black man that dominated a white sport.

SCREW TIGGER WOODS!!!! He wants to be known as a “cablinasian” then so bid. He will need to deal with his current situation as a “cablinasian” and continue to believe that he has a ‘white pass’.
