I guess it says something about my upbringing and my insular adulthood that I am only now coming to grasp just how twisted our Bizzaro world really is.
Contrary to my life’s experience predating the latest Israeli war with Hamas, I have awakened to the reality that evil is sympathetic; self-defense is terrorism; opinions - actually warped opinions, are journalism; relief organizations are intended to relieve those who do good of their reputations; civilians are okay to kill, but only if they are Jewish; all world leaders are fluent in the language of duplicity; and, perhaps most confounding, Hamas and many vocal Palestinians really do care more about exterminating Jewish lives than preserving their own.
Logic fails. How does one reason with a lunatic world?
Can someone, anyone, please explain to me Roseanne Barr or Annie Lennox, both of whom have mistaken mild celebrity for wisdom? Have my journalism colleagues at TIME lost their friggin minds?: “Can Israel Survive Its Assault on Gaza?” asked TIME’s Tim McGirk this past week, reporting from Jerusalem, where the press is free and the government freely elected.
It’s not Israel that I’m most worried about, Mr. McGirk, it’s the rest of the festering world.
If there had been printing presses in the time of Abraham, TIME no doubt would be reporting: “the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah, who share the world’s hopes for moral clarity and integrity, look to Abraham and his life and bemoan the Jew’s obvious lack of virtue and decency.”
I’m not a fire and brimstone type of prognosticator, but one need not be a bible scholar to understand that once the world spins off its moral axis, as it clearly has, the suffering and destruction may start with the Jews, but won’t ever end there. How many tens of millions of non-Jews died in World War II because large segments of the world population believed Hitler would only decimate Jews?
It is not enough in 2009 for large elements of society to betray their humanity; to live hedonistic, sadistic lives; to cultivate and satisfy animalistic appetites; and to deny God and His values. These dybbuks - devils - anoint themselves guardians of “morality” and then proceed in ‘majority-rules’ mobs to enact their own depraved proclamations of who is good and what is evil.
Well, they may be able to fool CNN and TIME (truth be told, they include CNN and Time) - but just as they cannot make man-made global warming a reality because they declare it so, they cannot and will not turn Hamas into victims and Israel into Nazis.
It is an abomination that they even try.
So I write and I pray. I write not in the belief that I will break through to any of the demented with logic, but because if I don’t express my feelings I will explode in disgust and anger. And I pray. I pray because I believe, as surely as I believe that the diurnal movements of the sun and moon are beyond human control, that we’ve reached a point in our uncivilization that only the hand of Hashem can now set decency back on its proper axis.
These days, and I fear for many days ahead, the world sinks deeper into depravity. For those who read this and wonder how to proceed, I offer these few words of advice: Keep your eyes and your feet on your own moral path and when you are eventually clear of the evil that engulfs us, don’t look back.

she is not saying Hamas are victims, she’s saying the palestinians including the dead children are. It is said so many like you are warping her words and anyone else’s that dare criticize Israel.
What number of victims must there be for Annie Lennox to speak up? Did she lead any rallies when Hamas was sending suicide bombers into Israeli pizza parlors? Did she utter a peep during the 8 years that Israeli school children in Sedorot lived in constant fear? She has zero credibility when she starts caring about “innocents” only when they extend beyond Jews and Jewish blood. I need not warp her words, they are warped as soon as they leave her lips. Finally, does she mention that the reason that Palestinian children don’t have protection from Israel is that Palestinian adults spent their money on rockets to kill Jews—not bomb shelters to protect their own children?
You killed our children so we’ll kill yours (either side says now). I think everyone is aware there are victims on both sides. I know Israel has to take action. Can’t they exert a little more care? They are a rich first world nation. I have to agree with you, the world does seem to be sinking into depravity. I think Annie’s heart is in the right place, and I don’t think she is anti Israel.

Attacking the woman for being anti war, only feeds and is fed by the hate and fear that wages war, all war, any war. Period. Annie Lennox practices Tibetan Buddhism and her point is that after decades and decades, blowing each other up has gotten this conflict NOWHERE.
The people spewing their venom in papers and on the net, towards Annie for being anti war, simply because you don’t like who is standing next to her, should be writing en mass to the UN for being globally impotent, for instance and not letting the hate of others contaminate you like a plague. All this hate against a woman because you recognize her is pointless.
I am surrounded by Israelis and Jews were I live and work in the USA and have my entire life. Not one of them disagree with Annie Lennox. The don’t respond out of ignorance and hate towards her. They see her point.

If she were not well known, I wouldn’t be disgusted by her using her singing fame to make evil political pronouncements.
Why are you defending her, if not for her fame? To your cries of Peace, Peace, Peace, I reply: Self-Defense, Self-Defense, Self-Defense. If you want peace in the Middle East, then tell Hamas to stop firing rockets at civilian centers in Israel. I promise that Israel will stop defending itself as soon as that happens.

She would decry Hamas for using funds to build rockets instead of schools. She’d scream at the top of her vocal chords to have Hamas cease the teaching of hate and martyrdom to its children.

I like Annie Lennox’s music. She follows Buddhism; I like that. But Dean, you are right, and others miss the point. Why is she opening her mouth now when Israel reacts to all the provocation? You can be for peace, yet after a while you need to make a decision after someone has shot at your loved ones and they won’t stop no matter what forebearance you show. The reactions to Dean’s article prove his point. It’s a world that has lost the ability to discern good from evil. Ken Livingston, the BBC, Roseanne Barr, and all the rest of this crew can defame Israel all they want. It won’t change the rightness of what Israel did. I get the impression that Annie Lennox is not a hater of Israel, but for her to stand up at this moment, ignoring Hamas’ outrages, and complain loudly about Israel was wrong because it is unfair. She also asked others around the world to protest against Israel. I don’t like that one bit. To the great peace lovers who have written in their two bits, I suggest you direct your impassioned pleas for peace to all the other trouble spots on the globe and give Israel a break.
