I was away from the TV this morning when the Rev. Joseph Lowery followed the Rev. Rick Warren and President Barack Obama with a benediction that moved many. It wasn’t just the righteousness of what he said but the way with which he said it, as is apparent in his closing words: “We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.” |
