OC church leader arrested for alleged child molestation

As I’ve mentioned before, sexual abuse by religious leaders is not only a problem in the Roman Catholic Church. For example, Bishop Oscar Perez of the Old Catholic Church in Laguna Hills (different denomination) was arrested over the weekend for allegedly sexually abusing a boy under the age of 12.

From the OC Weekly:

Old Catholic Church, which is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, rented space at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Laguna Hills. The Old Catholic Church was formed in the 1800s by Roman Catholics who broke away over papal infallibility. Today’s Old Catholic Church is in full communion with the Anglican Communion.

For the past two years, Perez has been conducting masses at St. George’s, which is where he met a boy under 12 and his family. The bishop is accused of asking the boy’s parents if the child could help him with chores around Perez’s house. The boy told his mother of the lewd acts that are said to have occurred in August.
