Big protests on big day for NYC gays

Big day in New York City today. For the first time, the city clerk was giving certificates of marriage to gay couples. It’s official. And like with California and other states, the world has not come to an end. Maybe in October?

In the meantime, there was plenty of protesting in NYC today. The Christian Post has this story:

Protesters gathered at rallies held in Manhattan, Albany, Rochester and Buffalo demanding that state lawmakers put the gay marriage issue before voters by placing it on a statewide referendum. All four rallies kicked off at 3 p.m. and were live streamed on the “Let the People Vote” website.

“Let the people vote!” the crowds in all four cities chanted.

In Buffalo, the Rev. William Gillison, pastor of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, expressed his outrage at New York lawmakers who voted to legalize gay marriage.

“A handful of legislators paid no attention to millions of New Yorkers,” said Gillison, standing outside Buffalo City Hall. “We are upset because you violated our law that is older and greater than New York.”

Though I am a follower of the same great law that predates New York’s, I take issue with Pastor Gillison expecting a secular government to track along God’s law.

Further, a vote isn’t as easy in New York as, say, California. There, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage can only get on the ballot if a majority of either house of the State Assembly vote to have it there. And based on the assembly’s recent passage of the Marriage Equality Act, that seems unlikely any time soon.
