RIP: Sarah Palin’s political career

Posted by Brad A. Greenberg

I friend told me a few months ago that she felt bad for Sarah Palin. She had been elevated too high too quickly, and the move would likely cost her a promising political career. Agreed, though I don’t think that is a bad thing.

I’ve blogged more than many of you would like about Palin during the past 10 weeks. I’m glad to say goodbye to the Alaska governor. First, though, please indulge this post, courtesy of Fox News’ campaign reporter Carl Cameron.

It turns out Cameron had been told some very embarrassing things about Palin, but on the condition that he not report them until after the election. Well, that day was today. Here’s what Cameron said:

CAMERON: There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lacked a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency.

We are told by folks that she didn’t know what countries were in NAFTA — the North American Free Trade Agreement. That being Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. We’re told that she didn’t understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series — a country just in itself. A whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability.

Also turns out Palin refused media training before her disastrous interview with Katie Couric. No surprise there. For a reminder, watch the video after the jump:

Yet another case of bash Palin first and ask questions later. You may consider Cameron a qualified journalist, but doesn’t the anonymous sourcing fail the smell test? Cameron is the means, the scoop is the opportunity, now for the motive:

Let’s ask ourselves: Who lost the election by a landslide?

It was NOT McCain and Palin.

In the face of
- A disastrous Republican adminstration approval rating,
- A Democrat with the appeal of a legendary historic sweep
- Being outspent between SIX to one over the course of the last two years and two to one for the Presidential campaign alone (a betrayal of Obama’s agreement with McCain)
- An insane, fumbled and suspicious buildup of multiple staggering economic crises and especially immediately upon McCain/Palin’s post-convention bounce
- Sheer greater numbers of Democratic and minority voters
- A relentless, outrageous and corrupt media campaign against Palin that has not stopped yet.
- Etc.

... in the face of all that, McCain and I say at least as much Palin brought out a popular vote to within two percent of the opposition. A few more votes in complacent Republican states such as Alaska itself (where they easily won by two to one), or flipping just half of the difference would make it a tie.

No, it was the Republican campaign staff and strategy that failed unforgivably. The landslide was electoral, not popular. But these highly paid a$$holes are all looking for jobs, and what will they put on their resumes? They HAVE to smear Palin or accept that responsibility.

But Cameron is not professional enough to tell us that his information is written on toilet paper. Such stupid charges. btw, the name Carl Cameron is known to every Jew-hater as the man who spread innuendos (from unnamed sources again) about Jewish spying and involvement in the 911 attacks.

And speaking of unnamed sources, looky here

A note (ostensibly) from a former Obama staffer. All good stuff, but here is about Palin:

2 – Sarah Palin. Don’t believe what the media is telling you about how horrible a choice she was. Again, our internal polling suggests that though she has had a minimal impact on pulling disaffected Hillary Democrats to McCain, she has done wonders in mobilizing the base for McCain.

Another thing – we were completely taken by surprise with her pick.

... the unexpected happened – Sarah Palin. We had no clue as to how to handle her, and bungled it from the start. Though through our misinformation networks, we have successfully taken some of the shine off. But let there be no doubt. She remains a major obstacle. She has singlehanded solidified “soft” Republican support, mobilized the McCain ground game, and has even had some appeal to independents and Hillary voters. This is what our internal polling confirms.

... As part of my research duties, I scour right wing blogs and websites to get somewhat of a “feel” as to what is being talked about on the other side. Much of it is nonsense, but there are some exceptions which give the campaign jitters.

A spirited campaign has been made to infiltrate many pro-Hillary sites and discredit them. A more disorganized, but genuine effort has also been made to sow doubts among the unapologetically right wing sites such as redstate.com.

Don’t you guys get it? This has been the Obama campaign’s sole strategy from the very beginning! The only way he wins is over a dispirited, disorganized, and demobilized opposition. This is how it has been for all of his campaigns. What surprises me is that everyone has fallen for it. You may point to the polls as proof of the inevitability of all of this.

If so, you have fallen for the oldest trick in the book.

How did we skew these polls, you might ask? It all starts with the media “buzz” which has been generated over the campaign.

... I changed my somewhat positive opinion of this campaign during the unfair and sexist campaign against Sarah Palin. I will never agree with her on the issues and will probably never vote for her, but I am embarrassed of what has happened. I can’t ignore our own hand in all of this.

What I do know is that I will not be voting for Obama this time around. Treat that as you will.

Palin remains a formidable political threat, and they won’t let up on her.
