Rev. Jeremiah Wright returns to Trinity, rants against media

I know journalists are a despised group of people—public opinion polls usually rank us just above used car salesman—but do we really represent the gates of hell? The Rev. Jeremiah Wright—you remember him—said so while making his first return to the pulpit at Trinity Church since retiring last spring:

““Jesus said upon this rock I will build—listen to the promise—my church,” Wright said. “And the gates of hell—listen to the promise—the gates of hell—neither ABC nor CNN—the gates of hell—neither Hannity nor O’Reilly—the gates of hell—neither Time, Time magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune . . . the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Nothing will be impossible with God.”

I wouldn’t take it pesonally. J. W.‘s media image was (deservedly) ridiculed only second to Sarah Palin’s so he has certainly earned the wright to speak.

But in my opinion he really doesn’t care about that, having successfully manipulated the media (esp. at the National Pres Club appearance) into giving Obama plausible deniability regarding his church membership. This speech was a nod to the lay elders or Board members (if they have such things) of Trinity, who may not have appreciated the exposure of what goes on in the Church.

And speaking of the National Press Club, contrast Wright’s ranting clown act there with the measured, intellectual non-polemic presentation given at the National press Club by Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1991, shortly before his assasination, recorded on C-Span and available here and elsewhere. It might be useful context for those who who blow Kahane off but have never actually seen, heard or read him. Sorry to disillusion anyone.
