Protests over Prop. 8 move to evangelicals and The OC

The protests from same-sex marriage advocates that last week snarled traffic in West L.A. migrated over the weekend from the Mormon temple to the Orange County megachurch led by Rick Warren. About a 1,000 protested outside Saddleback and accused Warren of lying about what would happen to society if Proposition 8 failed.

While L.A. Jews voted overwhelmingly against the gay-marriage ban, evangelical Christians, like those at Saddleback, voted over-overwhelmingly for the constitutional amendment:

—84 percent of those who attend church weekly voted yes.

—81 percent of white evangelicals voted yes.

—65 percent of white Protestants voted yes.

—64 percent of Catholics voted yes. Catholics accounted for 30 percent of all voters.

Man, do I feel like an outlier.

But we basically knew all that before the election, didn’t we? Kinda safe to go protest at Rick Warren’s church, when there is no hope of convincing anyone there. What’s the point, intimidation?

The kicker in this election was the atypical huge black turnout of both sexes for Obama, who voted ‘yes’ on Prop 8 by 70%. Somehow the victims of past discrimination of all people don’t see gay marriage as a discrimination issue, in spite of all the king’s stallions and all the king’s mares. But no progrssive is going to snarl traffic in a black neighborhood when that will highlight the obvious chasm that separates racial discrimination from gender confusion.
