As The Web Guy pointed out in the post about the Alliance Defense Fund challenging preacher to sermonize on political candidates, 300 rabbis have signed a list showing their support for Barack Obama.
I’m not sure what the legal implications are here—I believe ministers can back particular candidates but can’t preach it from the pulpit—and I’m waiting for an answer from the IRS.
Here’s the letter from Rabbis for Obama:
We join together to support Senator Obama for President, and we do so in the belief that he will best support the issues important to us in the Jewish community.
Some of us know Senator Obama personally, and we recognize that he has been inspired by Jewish values such as Tikkun Olam and the pursuit of justice, and he is deeply committed as well to a civil discourse between opposing arguments. We also know that Senator Obama will inspire young people, both in the Jewish community and the wider American community, to become more involved in improving this country and repairing the world.
We know that Barack Obama’s longstanding, stalwart support for Israel is a testament to his own principles as well as the strong bi-partisan pro-Israel movement in America, and we fear that the attempts by some to use Israel as a wedge issue against him - unjustifiably - is dangerous in that it politicizes the pro-Israel position. Most importantly it has completely distorted Senator Obama’s record. With his tough but pragmatic approach to Iran, Senator Obama is in the best position to restore faith in America as a leader in the fight against serious threats to Israel, our allies, and the United States.
Senator Barack Obama inspires in us the hope for an America once more called to its best values. We know him to be a man of incredible integrity, born of a deep and abiding spiritual faith based on the teachings of the Hebrew Prophets, and committed to achieving a world of peace with justice for all people.
*Updated: The IRS e-mailed me Section 501 of the tax code. This pertains to—you guessed it—501c3 organization. In regards to politicking preachers, this is an example of an acceptable endorsement:
Minister C is the minister of Church L, a section 501(c)(3) organization and Minister C is well known in the community. Three weeks before the election, he attends a press conference at Candidate V’s campaign headquarters and states that Candidate V should be reelected. Minister C does not say he is speaking on behalf of Church L. His endorsement is reported on the front page of the local newspaper and he is identified in the article as the minister of Church L. Because Minister C did not make the endorsement at an official church function, in an official church publication or otherwise use the church’s assets, and did not state that he was speaking as a representative of Church L, his actions do not constitute campaign intervention by Church L.

All clergy, like anyone who lives in the USA, has the right to express a private polticical opinion. We don’t loose the right of free speech just because we are ordained. The IRS has affirmed and recently reaffirmed this rule.
Who really cares what these Rabbis have to say? It’s time for congregants to start thinking for themselves!
By the way, those asterisks next to the names indicate that they’re local rabbis.
The comment from Leslie speaks for itself. The 300 Rabbis and Rabbits listed are among the least influential possible. Before I get the ‘outraged’ treatment, ask yourself if you are one who will be calling any of them up, taking notes on their sermons or blogs or whatever they have, or taking their opinions into acount even a teensy weensy little bit. In politics, what counts is votes. How many votes do these guys and gals have on theor coattails? I say none at all. Three hundred equals three hundred. Big deal.
In the Orthodox world, there are star players whose names are instantly recognizable by far-flung constituencies who will take what they say seriously. A word from one of them would influence thousands. But they are not involved in politics so the point is moot.
Rabbi Ross’ argument is not on point. The point is not whether individuals have a First Amendment right to speak. The point is whether Rabbis should be using their position to purport to speak on behalf of Jews generally, and endorsing candidates. The Jewish community (at least in Virginia) has liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans. It is a misuse of concepts of Tikkun Olam and Tzedakah to use them as a springboard to make political endorsements.
If these rabbis assert that Obama best exemplifies Jewish values, are they implying that those who support Sen. McCain are lacking in those values?
Andrew you are correct but I hearken back to Brad’s original point regarding their tax-exempt status. A given rabbi may make it under the IRS wire as an individual, but three hundred guys banding and branding as ‘Rabbis for ...’ is a clear exercise of non-individual power and abuse of authority out of context. The IRS language above applies to individuals in circustances unconnected with their roles as clergy. I would yank of all their tax-exemptions and let the courts work it out.
I wanted to leave a question for comment.
How can any person of the jewish community support a man for President when that man has a relationship with someone who says Louis Farrakhan is “a good man”? Is our nation moving towards the same history as pre-war Germany, in attemping to elect Obama, with his obvious racist and anti-semitic views? He has refused to seperate himself from Jeremiah Wright, calling him his “uncle”, “mentor”, and “a good friend to me”. He has kept a close rtelationship with this evil man for almost all of his adult life, and now he is running for President and all of a sudden he doesn’t believe this hateful, destructive garbage anymore!!! Think and educate yourselves. PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS.
I do not believe that Obama is personally racist and anti-semitic. However I do believe that he is too uncaring and ambitious to risk alienating his supporters who ARE racist and antisemitic. He is too morally lazy to determine the truth and justice on Jewish and Israeli issues and too clueless to know that he needs to do that. The majority of his advisory staff are antisemitic, antizionist and anti Israel. And let’s not forget the influence of Michelle who is active on the Council of Foreign Relations, which at the very least has its own views and agenda on all of the above.
When you are for Obama you are also for Biden. In 1982 during the First Lebanon War, Menachem Begin was present at a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This account appeared in the Jerusalem Post of March 13, 1992
( http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/jpodhoretz/22302 )
In a conversation with Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, after a sharp confrontation in the Senate Foreign elations Committee on the subject of the settlements, Begin defined himself as “a proud Jew who does not tremble with fear” when speaking with foreign statesmen.
During that committee hearing, at the height of the Lebanon War, Sen. John Biden (Delaware) had attacked Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria and threatened that if Israel did not immediately cease this activity, the US would have to cut economic aid to Israel.
When the senator raised his voice and banged twice on the table with his fist, Begin commented to him: “This desk is designed for writing, not for fists. Don’t threaten us with slashing aid. Do you think that because the US lends us money it is entitled to impose on us what we must do? We are grateful for the ssistance we have received, but we are not to be threatened. I am a proud Jew. Three thousand years
of culture are behind me, and you will not frighten me with threats. Take note: we do not want a single soldier of yours to die for us.”
Biden was a pisher next to Begin and he still is.
many of those 300 rabbis & rabbits could convert Obama in an hour, or anybody else for that matter. Obama is as Jewish & as committed to Judaism as the majority of congregants of these 300 rabbis & rabbits.
