Jewish kids think ‘Obama will kill the Jews’

Posted by Brad A. Greenberg

Responding to that post I wrote this morning about continued efforts to demonize Barack Obama, a friend e-mailed that at her son’s elementary school—a top-shelf private school in Los Angeles—some of his friends have said that, if elected, “Obama will kill the Jews.”

“We were horrified!” she wrote. “I don’t remember anyone saying that about Kerry or Gore so I see some ignorance and racism here. We’re upset, not just because we are Democrats supporting Obama but because talk like that is absolutely scary to young children. And the boys saying it are hearing this from their highly educated and very wealthy parents. Unbelievable!

“Even though I believe this outcome of this election will be one to celebrate—I can’t wait for this election to be over!”

The steaming pile of lies and hate spread by Republicans reflects their inability to communicate anything positive about their years in power.

The GOP trashed the Constitution,  ruined our economy and turned the world against us.

They don’t deserve four more minutes, let alone four more years.

Why do you assume that the ‘highly educated and wealthy’ Jewish parents of the same school as your friend are Republicans? And it does not sound to me like we are getting the full story. Maybe what they said in context is that if Obama is elected, he will move policy and events in a direction that will CAUSE the Jews to be killed.

I didn’t suggest the parents were Republican.

Not you, Web Guy. What I am seeing is not a steaming pile of hate and lies but a hysterical suppression of any discussion of anything at all regarding Obama besides happy-talk. That may well be legitimate psycho-political tactics, serving to tie up he opposition with denying and denouncing and rejecting every real or imagined offense.

All the well-educated, wealthy people I know are pretty clear-eyed about lies and hate and propaganda and innuendo etc., especially if they have long experience with it, especially if they have suffered from it, especially if they are distinctive Jews of the unpopular persuasion like me (and least impressed with Obama). I don’t know what those kids heard but to say that Obama’s known values and associations clearly point to a threat to Jews is legitimate. It’s not what he says. It’s not because of his legislative record (what record?). It’s not because he is not a nice guy. It’s because the people he does identify with on many ways and levels and the enemies of the Jews and Israel. And they will all havea piece of him if he gets his hands on world-class power.

But in the end, this is a story about kids. Man bites dog. What are the kids of the ‘progressive’ community hearing and saying about McCain and Palin? I wouldn’t know but you blogged on the McCain with dripping fangs on the photographer’s website and the Palin effigy. Those may be extreme but are not exceptions. Wassup with that? Before The One came along these politicians were inoffensive and well liked. You did not respond but I pointed you to the new article about media bias from ABC News from an insider. What does that say about the fans of the Huffington Post, Dailykos, moveon etc. The endless dreary character assasination and ridicule of McCain and Palin totally swamps the discussion on Obama, who is bulletproof on everything because of the bias police.

Some kid told me once in fourth grade that if I ate raw cookie dough, the cookies would rise and bake in my stomach and kill me. It wasn’t true. They made it up.

Is it even remotely possible that some kid made this up just to push some buttons and his friends started repeating it? I’m sure they’re studying this election in the classroom as well. I hate these hysterical stories where someone hears something and then makes an assumption about its origins and parental responsibility without going to the school to find out what happened. I, as a parent, would want to know. Who said this? Is that kid a prankster? What was the context?

I’m not saying that the tenor of this kid’s comment wasn’t far more disturbing than cookie dough exploding in my gut, but ... let’s just relax a little bit and remember that this was in an elementary school and kids say crazy s#!% sometimes that they don’t mean.

Maybe, LK. But quite surprisingly, I was speaking with a friend this morning whose kids attend an Orthodox Jewish school here in LA and, unsolicited, she said her son had been told by a classmate that “Obama will kill the Jews.” No kidding.

I don’t think it’s that kids say the darndest things. It’s that some parents see Obama as the ultimate bogeyman. Kids overhear their parents say something like, “If Obama is elected, it’s going to cost Jewish lives in Israel.” (I don’t agree with this, but it’s certainly an opinion plenty of Jews share.)

What is scary is the way children will interpret that opinion.

The term ‘opinion’ implies that it is unfounded, perhaps even a matter of whimsical or irrational personal taste. I continuously back up what I say with some facts or logic or likelihood, and there is never any evidence to counter it except for abstract calculated statements and crafted reports and polls. The AIPAC speecha and retraction are just the most obvious. Obama won’t kill the Jews, but if Obama is elected more Jews will die sooner and espcially long-term than if McCain is elected. That’s good enough for me, as one who believes those Jews don’t deserve to die and it is an unacceptable result. I should add that if Obama is elected more Arabs will die too, for those who think that it’s ok if more Jews die.

Hitler planned to build a museum of Jewish artifacts, so future generations would believe there was once such a people after he killed them all. You could keep that last comment as a shrine, a Tomb of the Unknown Antisemite (unless you get a better one).
