God and aliens

Swiss scientist Michel Mayor, who was credited with co-finding the first planet outside our solar system, is now sleuthing for signs of alien life. What if he finds it? What would that mean for the religious faithful on planet Earth?

It’s a vexing question, mostly because it seems impossible to know the importance of the answer. Two years ago, Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders told me the existence of extraterrestrials wouldn’t contradict theological doctrine. Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists already believe aliens exist, though not the kind that tried to eat Sigourney Weaver. Scientology, on the other hand, is built upon scary space creatures.

From an article I wrote for The Sun (no longer available online):

The theological significance of extraterrestrial life has been debated for centuries. In the Middle Ages, as today, some argued that God could have created worlds better than ours; others maintained that Earth was the center of God’s universe.

“Although it became heretical to deny that God could create other worlds, it was dangerous to claim he had,’ Joseph L. Spradley, a physics and astronomy professor at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., wrote in 1998 for a fellowship of Christian scientists.

The verdict from most Christians is still out. However, many theologians say, if God did create other worlds and other people, that would not contradict the biblical story of the sin of man being redeemed by the son of God.

“How God shares the story of creation and of love and of the ultimate hope for the restoration of all things in God’s design, I think that can be worked out in many different ways,’ said Philip A. Amerson, president of the Claremont School of Theology, a United Methodist seminary.

There could be different paths to God on different planets, Amerson said. Others accept a more traditional salvation model.

“Saint Paul would suggest to indicate, and it is just a hint, that if there is life on other planets, and these beings needed salvation or redemption, the death of Christ on planet Earth would be a sufficient price,’ said the Rev. John Jefferson Davis, a Presbyterian and professor of theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary near Boston.

Another possibility is that extraterrestrials would not need atonement, Seventh-day Adventists believe. Because these beings would not have been borne of Adam and Eve, they would be perfectly moral beings incapable of sin.

What would [finding alen life] mean for the religious faithful on planet Earth?

A Baha’i's present understanding involves both a complex and simple answer. The latter is based upon the actual words of Baha’u'llah, the Founder of the Baha’i Faith. In the 1800’s, He said (para) for every fixed star there are planets. His words are recently being found true. He further stated that (para) creatures could then be found on those planets (micro-macro).

Again, from my perspective, the more complex answers involving their relationship to God would also suggest a loving, systematic, and every-expanding guidance of “intelligent” life towards Him, His knowledge and Will, based upon their unique evolutionary path.

In other words, God’s universe for His creatures (including us) is highly complex. Yet it involves a single common denominator, that of the undeniable will and myriad expressions of life itself. Presently, we understand none of them. Nor do we yet understand God’s complete purpose and will, even for the human race.

We are still like blind men, each groping one part of an elephant. Hence, projecting our somewhat elementary assumptions upon a vast whole somehow doesn’t seem appropriate in this new age of Reality.

So the formulation of earthly religious doctrines concerning alien life are futile exercises, again in my opinion. Only when we can mentally and spiritually reconcile our own religious differences and diverse Holy Books will we discover greater truths about God’s Creation—the Universe. Such are the ordained mysteries; such are the requirements of “intelligent” life.

Heck folks , It is nearly impossible to get folks to beleive God created life here on earth.

Yet most of those people are quick to claim that God has created all kinds of life on other planets.

Comment by Arnie M on 2/28/09 at 5:22 pm

Arnie, I don’t believe in the god and religious constructs you don’t believe in. There is the god of human imagination.  Then there is an unknowable God, beyond any life form’s comprehension and understanding. In order to know God, Man has always relied upon the Teachers, those Holy Beings, Whom He sends—successively and progressively.

Comment by James on 2/28/09 at 8:19 pm

Hi James.

Actually I beleive in the God of the Bible. The God of Israel. But that does not mean I am correct.  Proof is required , at least to me anyway.

Much proof is given . For example 30% of the Bible predicts the future in advance.  70% of these prophecies have already unfolded exactly as told. The remainder are almost happening on a daily basis right now.

But that is not the issue. The bottom line is the majority of folks want absolutely nothing to do with a Creator , especially the Jewish / Christian one.  For that reason they invent every other type of god or decended from monkey ancestory they can come up with.

The folks who want absolutely nothing to do with Jesus Christ , well guess what , they will not have Jesus Christ. We judge our own place for the future. Nobody will be to blame. It has always been that way.

Best wishes in your studies and remember to look for proof. You are intelligent and should find it quite easy to do.

Many thanks
Arnie

Arnie,

I apologize for my delay in responding.

I, too, believe in the God of the Bible, just as all Baha’is do. So I agree with your first 2 paragraphs.

Beginning with the third, however, is the major cause of human conflict. “For that reason they invent every other type of god or decended from monkey ancestory they can come up with.”

When one sincerely investigates the foundation of all major religions, he will find not only astonishing similarities but a commanality that validates the Baha’i teaching that there is only ONE religion of God, revealed in different ways, down through the ages, by different voices. All this, according to the circumstances and degree of understanding of the people They were sent to.

They all were Holy Beings in fact. The forces of History have obscured this reality they Each possessed. So, like His Holiness Jesus Who came to both renew and expand Judaic thought and its spiritual reality, Each One, throughout History, did the same for Their particular people.

Now that all humanity has attained the threshhold of maturity in its continuous evolution, A global Revelation was given in the 1800s for all mankind, not races or tribes. The Source of what I wrote is there. Facts bear this out, which is why I decided to follow the Baha’i Faith.

Remember Jesus’ Words; I have many things to tell you but you can’t understand them. But when the Spirit of Truth comes, He will make all things known unto you (para).

He came. The evidence is all around us. We’ve even been freed from our traditional home—Earth. As you know, His Name is Baha’u'llah. And His coming explains all these kinds of human phenomena unheard of, even undreamt of, in ages past.

Thank you for your kind words about me. I feel the same towards you. Perhaps we can engage in a civil discussion, one that challenges both our minds.

Hi! In Genesis,God is the creator of every living things in earth and above it.Through out the bible is described the relationship between God and persons. From the very first day of our life we are showed how much God is loving us,this involves what His Son did.
Even if aliens were created by God if it was in His will we would have known them by now.In not saying that they exist or not ,God is knowing this better than us.
Why I started this subject with God’s love is because: to understand the true value of each person is enough to see that He gave His only Son to die for us.So according to this I think that God loves us a lot.

Comment by Ovidiu on 3/20/09 at 6:18 am

Ovidiu,
Your comments are absolutely true; without any doubt or argument, the Holy Bible is filled with spiritual evidence of God’s love for us.

I also agree with your assertion that God’s will has prevented us from “knowing” of the existence of other forms of intelligent life. Yet, that doesn’t mean that such life doesn’t exist. For, God’s incomprehensible love for us also infers that He would protect us in this stage of our ongoing development from being overwhelmed by more intelligent life forms.  In other words, we have our own unique destiny to fulfill, not an alien race’s.

Comment by James on 3/20/09 at 10:00 am

Some of Funes’ comments, like his statement that “The Bible is not fundamentally a work of science,” are as old as Augustine. That’s not to mention the fact that, Vatican position aside, Funes isn’t speaking for the whole Church, and his statements in an interview are a far cry from a papal encyclical. His ideas are nevertheless interesting, particularly in light of other past theological and science fictional writings on the spiritual status of beings from other worlds.

Comment by Silversol on 7/28/09 at 5:36 am

Silversol, I detect a bit of philosopher in your words. They are appreciated. Yet, like most philosophers, you arrived at no conclusion, as if attempting to maintain an objective perspective. We are now in the Age of Reality when every searching and learned mind can prove or disprove past historical beliefs, whatever they may be. This is the purpose of science, meaning that, if religious beliefs don’t conform to its tenets, then they are wrong. Thus the Church was historically wrong in its view of the Universe, God, and Man. This simply proved, but once and for all, that Truth existed outside of its understanding. So your reference to “the whole church” and, again, to a “papal encyclical” only demonstrates a religious loyalty, not a mind which places Truth above all other things. The latter is what I believe His Holiness Jesus meant when He urged all believers in Him to always “seek”. We all must be faithful to that “command”, if you will. Otherwise, we will never understand what our loving Creator has prepared for us.

Did Aliens Bring Religion to Earth?
These Aliens would truly be God’s to us humans.
I had never heard of this before, but looked into it and found this article: It’s an interesting issue.

As A Christian , I lean heavily on information provided in the Bible. Unfortunately it does not provide all the answers to every question. Some time future we will know it all.  In the meantime we are stuck down here with incomplete information.

We are given a minimum of information as to what will transpire before Jesus Christ comes back.  Sounds like it will fulfill many of the desires of new age enlightenment , saviours will come , godhood will be attainable by many , miracles will be observed , everyone will be happy. Aliens may even appear to convince the masses.

Everybody will buy into all this except the Christian.  He knows what is happening. He is expecting these things. He knows it is counterfit.  He will wait for the real thing. The return of the Jewish Messiah Jesus Christ.

Best wishes.

I don’t know what it means for people who believe in invisible supernatural beings, that’ up to them if they still wish to believe the lies, but Aliens do exist and this i know because i have met one. Get wise to this because we are not alone in this Universe. They are very aware of us, so do not try to harm them if you meet one because they are also mortal like humans and do read your mind.

I honestly don’t see what the hoopla is about.

When we speak of the Imago Dei, we speak of the ability to reason and make choices, the bestowing of free will by God. As such, there is, in all likelihood, other races to whom God has created and touched. No conflict there. In fact, the CS Lewis wrote much on the subject.

From a purely evolutionary perspective, it is very likely that aliens we encounter will have religious beliefs of some kind, since religion does much to encourage altruism, pro-social behavior, and promote civilization (see “Darwin’s Cathedral” by David Wilson).

Comment by Wildrow12 on 9/07/10 at 11:17 pm

Being a Seventh-Day Adventist I will comment and elaborate on what has been said concerning this. It’s not that we believe they have this stereotypical form of what an ‘alien’is depicted to be; but we believe God did create other beings outside of Planet Earth. What they look like… we don’t truly know, there is a lot of speculation. However we do believe that the other worlds were tempted by Satan before Earth but they didn’t submit. Earth was targeted, Adam and Eve succumbed to the serpent(satan) by eating the fruit therefore leaving Earth’s descendants to bear the cost of sin.
As for the Church of Scientology, I feel the name contradicts itself because nothing of God will ever be explained by science, not everything must have an answer it is down to faith to be fair. (see Ellen.G.White literature via Review and Herald)

Comment by Dana Brown on 11/15/10 at 11:32 am

Thank you, Wildrow12 and Dana Brown, for offering your insights on this topic. But the obvious fact that you both choose to ignore what history as well as the present moment have proven to be absolutely true saddens me. Baha’u'llah came, suffered horribly, but left truths and guidance for all mankind. In doing so, he fulfilled every biblical, Quranic, and all other prophecies pertaining to the “Spirit of Truth”, the Great Educator, Who would come to mankind.

The topic of alien life on other planets cannot be found in previous versions of God’s Word, nor our present-day investigation of reality itself. But it can be found in His teachings, just as they should be. For all things are now explained; humanity must now accept and understand these teachings, as many, including the Earth’s brightest minds, are now doing.

As for science, we now know that it serves two purposes. God gave us minds to understand; science enables us to do it. But Baha’u'llah makes it perfectly clear that we can never ‘know’ God, our Creator, any more than the chair you’re sitting on that was created by man can know you, its creator. Thus, the second purpose of science is to show us ‘what we can’t know or understand’.

Dana, as for your ‘suggestions’ concerning Satan, we are not be believe anything that can’t be proven. Where in the Holy Bible that you lovingly follow is such a scenario concerning Satan? Nowhere! That’s why God sent Baha’u'llah to give us absolute Truth about such things. But, He also gave us free will to enable us to turn away or ‘choose the path to God’.

Comment by James on 11/18/10 at 11:31 am

Who cares?  It is highly likely we will never see extraterrestrials in our lifetime and likely not for millions of years in the future.  The believers will continue to believe and the skeptics will continue to be skeptical.  The existence of God is not known for sure and remains an open question.  Religion in the USA today is a scam designed to separate people from their hard earned cash.

Comment by allan on 12/10/10 at 11:32 pm

One day soon I will make public some confirming information about the (Jewish) Old Testament that will confirm every single word is the word of God. Even the bizarre verses that are hard to comprehend. It partly involves Space Shuttle Columbia and Israeli Colonel Ilan Ramon. Mostly it is about a middle East peace plan that comes from above , not the United Nations. The united Nations is asleep at the wheel. God is not.  I intend to present it as interesting reading for the non-religious among us. Men who do not polish golden candlestick for a living recognize good and accurate information. (My opinion.) Men who like extraterrestrial topics will like it as well.  It is like the God of Israel is an extraterrestrial.  He also hides nuggets of true and pure future events in plain sight in the old testament.

I expect the folks who polish religious golden candlesticks will also sit up and take notice.  In the meantime I type , and type, and type. I hope to finish by spring 2011. It is accurate , and biblical and good news.

May you have a kind and wonderful day.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi…I live in luton England, and experienced something in my local park near the Local airport that was clear as day…I take nothing for face value, but very spiritual! Having read so much on religion, all kinds of phenomenon and listened to peoples opinions, I now fundamentaly believe that religion itself especially Christianity in mind is based on the ET phenomenon…am sorry but the evidence is just too overwhelming and too coincidencial! The return of Christ is just the return of the ETs..its obvious from the governments that they know MORE about Et intelligence than they let on…from their own research that’s obvious…one would be insulting their own intelligence if they looked at the evidence and not even questioned the official gov line on the subject! I think the blog needs to ask the question again differently! And there are too many interests at stake for the truth to just be blurted out…including religious interests more than any other! Thanks!

Nathan, I too believe in extra-terrestrial life. Why shouldn’t I? As stated above, Baha’u'llah also confirms its existence on other planets. Personal Baha’i friends, one of whom is an ‘expert’ government witness on technical things, have actually seen UFOs. Yet none of us have difficulties in distinguishing between God, the historically documented Holy Ones periodically sent to man, and ETs.

ETs also know and worship God. They too have civilizations which have been advanced over millions of years by God’s Manifestations coming to their planets. This is the reason They come to us. To believe otherwise is to remain captive to early religious beliefs that taught this Earth and man are God’s single focus.

You inferred that you are an avid reader on religion. If so, then you should have gleaned that true religion is brought for the betterment of mankind, to advance his thought, his social relations, and to establish ever-greater knowledge of himself and His Creator. Nothing else! Especially reasons posited by those who only seek leadership.

Granted, some people cannot understand Manifestations of God. That is due to the historic conditioning of most religious beliefs which result in a diminishing of man’s free will.

The ‘Return’ prophesied in every major independent religion and remarkably fulfilled by Baha’u'llah is a ‘spiritual’, not purely intellectual phenomenon. You DO have a spirit. You are primarily a spiritual, not material being. So aliens have nothing to do with your spiritual needs; they have their own spiritual problems, based upon their need to conform to the latest spiritual Teachings given to them by their latest Manifestations of God, respectively. In other words, don’t limit your thinking when thinking of God. He loves ‘all’ of His Creation.

Wow…
I haven’t a clue as to how I wound up at this particular topic but I’ll go ahead and give my opinion so please remember that it is just an opinion.

I do believe in the rapture of the church in which chosen people are basically lifted up to Heaven, this comes before all of the madness begins on Earth.I also believe that propaganda has the power to convince people of certain things too, therefore those that are left behind after the rapture will need a convincing explanation as to what just happened, where is Aunt Nellie and little Johnny?Remember that there will be mass confusion at this point so just blame the aliens.
It actually makes sense, the more that believe this the less confusion society will experience. Have you ever heard that I’ll believe it when I see it,well how about I’ll see it when I believe it? The more alien movies we crank out the more people will believe but now I am actually seeing it on a God Blog on the internet. So let’s get those books written and the movies produced the sooner the better.Honestly speaking I doubt I will ever believe in aliens until I actually see one but convince me enough and I’ll then convince myself.

We make decisions in our society especially judicial decisions concerning life and death. these decisions are ajudicated based on proven evidence, witnesses, forensic evidence, etc. But when it comes to our existence and origin, we must put blind allegiance to GOD, whom we can’t see can’t interrogate and don’t understand his existence of never having a beginning or an end! How convienent, it doesn’t make sense!

Comment by RH3RD on 8/18/11 at 3:23 am

Maybe they had their own Adam and Eve who were even more evil than ours!

Comment by JJ Vachon on 8/22/11 at 8:29 pm

Wells isn’t this a interesting discussion. The Bible is a derivative of The Book Of The Dead with a twist. I think if anything we should refer to this about this topic. The Egyptian culture was here well before the European culture and they understood a lot more than we do now about our history. As far as aliens I think it would be cool if they existed.

Comment by New Silver Solution on 9/29/11 at 5:23 pm

There is much evidence that link the angels that mated with the daughters of men in Genesis 6:4 “nephilim”, to the ‘aliens’ we have heard about for centuries. Nephilim means “fallen ones” (fallen angels) mentioned in Jude and in the book of Peter. What are so-called alien abductions about? It has to do with sexual reproduction that apparently are assisting them create ‘hybrids’, the same things as were the “giants” mentioned in Genesis 6:4! Beware, aliens are inter-dimensional fallen ones (demonic deceivers)!
