It appears U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen reads Politico.com. In the above video, in which Cohen—yeah, that Steve Cohen—compares Barack Obama to Jesus and vice-president hopeful Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate.
Watch the video and tell me his statement doesn’t sound a lot like this comment from Jonathan Martin’s blog: “Mrs. Palin needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

Maybe he read it in The God Blog!
Hah, good call! Jesus also was against lying, which Palin seems to be in favor of
It is laughable for Congressman Steven Cohen to employ an New Testament backdrop for his comments. I am always ready to be of assistance, and I propose using the example of Korach. In the Bible, Korach was a community organizer and led a rebellion in the wilderness against Governor Moses. He gathered to him a few hundred people using eloquent rhetoric, flattery, and pandering. In the ultimate challenge, Moses invited him to put up or shut up. God sent Korach and his followers into the ground alive.
Why is it laughable?
A good communicator speaks in ways his audience understands.
I’m sure the Congressman would be happy to deliver a Korach drash to the appropriate crowd.
That Jesus/Pontius Pilate quote is a perfect smackdown for that santimonious no-nothing hypocrite.
You’ll be hearing lots more of it, I’m sure.
Representative Cohen represents an 80% African American, semi-poverty-lever Congressional district in Memphis—-the one the corrupt Ford Family has represented for decades. The only reason a Cohen is in is that, when the 2nd generation Harold Ford left the job to lose a U.S.Senate race; Cohen was the only person well known enough to step in.
Cohen was, for Memphis, a left winger. He is the father of the Tennessee State lottery,
which gives enough money back to marginal students in his district enabling them to go to college—-a significant number of them do not make it past the 2nd year because most are not qualified to be in higher education. His record for putting money back into the districts he represents—-sometimes from questionable sources—-is only rivaled by his ability to feather his own nest. Certainly that was his record as a long time Tennessee state legislator.
Cohen is very adept at seeming goy. To represent the constituency he now represents; some would say he has pictures of somebody in power, who chose not to oppose him or back his opponents.
Cohen usually does not have flashes of brilliance—-but rather low, rumbling flashes of plagiarism. Maybe his next move will be to change his name to Parson or Sexton, or perhaps DuBois or Robinson, since he is now representing a mostly black district.
Pay no attention when he rumbles up to the Congressional microphones to tell you he had a dream; chances are someone else will have had it first—-not necessarily Daniel or Jacob, but perhaps Pharoah or Nebuchadnezzar.
So it is no surprise people who read this think he was inspired here. If not here, somewhere outside himself.
I doubt that Cohen knows which end of a computer is up but undoubtedly on of his whippersnapper staffers read the comment on Politico.com, and naively assumes nobody will notice the lack of attribution.
I found it laughable because I assume that people are like me and like to get their religious information from those with an affiliation to it. Like a ‘Cohen’ exploiting Christian images for political purposes (overlooking a sitting officeholder of ‘all the people’ exploiting a public hearing for partisan purposes). I always feel patronized hearing Christians interpreting Jewish verses and passages to me. In my usual Christ-like manner I forgive immediately them of course but you will have to indulge me my amusement.
Web, I assume by ‘santimonious no-nothing hypocrite’ you mean Governor Palin. I don’t know what you are referring to specifically, except that aside from her election victory, after enough time in that role for people to know her and her policies and truthfullness for that matter she enjoys an 80% approval rating in her home state. That has to be a near record for all politicians in public life. So either all Alaskans are also liars or easily fooled. However it appears that Alaskans are foremost small town Americans who fly flags wne it isn’t the Fourth of July and pledge Alliegance to it without checking a blog for the fine points, support the military
You seem to think that in interest of ‘being all things to all’ people, the principled Cohen would employ the Korach analogy, but I am sure he wouldn’t. For one thing, he would not consider the Jewish Scriptures (O.T. to you) cool enough or familiar enough to make his point. Also, he would have to saying that Obama is a sanctimonious hypocrite like Korach.
