Checking on the pro soccer player who left for the seminary

The U.S. women’s national team had a heartbreaker in the World Cup Final on Sunday. But The Washington Post had an inspiring little update—of the human-interest variety—about the former professional soccer player who left the pitch for the seminary. Here’s what Kathy Orton had to say in this update on Chase Hilgenbrinck:
Many professional athletes have gone into the ministry, but few walk away from their sport in their prime, as Hilgenbrinck did in 2008 when he was a defender for the New England Revolution.
As Hilgenbrinck said at the time, his decision to become a priest was a gradual one. Now three years into his studies at the Emmitsburg, Md., seminary, he says he has no regrets.

“I certainly do miss it,” he said. “It is a part of me I’ll always love.”
Read the rest here. Hilgenbrinck’s story reminds me a bit of Fernando Tatis, who left MLB in his prime and then went back to make money to build a church.
