Checking on the pro soccer player who left for the seminary

Posted by Brad A. Greenberg

The U.S. women’s national team had a heartbreaker in the World Cup Final on Sunday. But The Washington Post had an inspiring little update—of the human-interest variety—about the former professional soccer player who left the pitch for the seminary. Many professional athletes have gone into the ministry, but few walk away from their sport in their prime, as Hilgenbrinck did in 2008 when he was a defender for the New England Revolution.

As Hilgenbrinck said at the time, his decision to become a priest was a gradual one. Now three years into his studies at the Emmitsburg, Md., seminary, he says he has no regrets.

“I certainly do miss it,” he said. “It is a part of me I’ll always love.”

Read the rest here. Hilgenbrinck’s story reminds me a bit of Fernando Tatis, who left MLB in his prime and then went back to make money to build a church.
