I feel a little validated today for all the references I make to “South Park” on this blog (and in life). “The Book of Mormon,” the Broadway musical from Matt Stone and Trey Parker that grew out of their episode “All About Mormons,” won nine—count ‘em, nine—awards at the Tonys on Sunday.
Here’s the story from Religion News Service:
Broadway neophytes Trey Parker and Matt Stone thanked their “South Park” fans and the audiences who are packing the show. “You guys made this show what it is,” Parker said. “And therefore, you’re going to have to atone for it one day.”
He went on to jokingly thank the “co-writer who passed away. Mr. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion. He couldn’t be here tonight, but—you did it, Joseph! You got the Tony!”
Nine is the third-most Tonys ever taken by a single play, just behind “The Producers” and “South Pacific.”
