    By Dr. Afshine Emrani

    September 2, 2015 | 3:11 pm

Not a bird, nor fish, nor seaweed.

Today a child washed up ashore.
His sin?  Birth into a cruel world.
    Shunned by shameless shenanigans.
Not even a basket to house this baby Moses.
    Landless- worse than homeless.

I see him flying into the open arms of waves,
    Away from...

    By Dr. Afshine Emrani

    August 26, 2014 | 6:26 pm

My younger self awaits me in that old home. He stares at the future that would be me; I ponder the past that was him. We connect on a bridge made of yearning and nostalgia. Hesitantly, we embrace.

We fall to our knees and sob. I ask if he ever told dad about how he...

    By Rabbi Robin Podolsky

    September 16, 2012 | 1:48 pm

First of all, Christopher Stevens sounds like a decent guy, a real mensch.  May his loved ones, those of everyone killed at the US embassy in Benghazi and everyone who died in protests this weekend be comforted.

Second of all, this story is so full of weird wrinkles, it will be...

What is the singular essence of Rosh Hashanah?

The core meaning of Rosh Hashanah is the sovereignty of the divine. By sovereignty of the divine, I don’t mean any particular level of Jewish practice. Jewish pietistic literature is well aware that anyone can go through the motions...
