At a Jewish time of reflection, thoughts on a pope and Catholicism

Passover is over and Shavuot is weeks away. It's a season when Jews traditionally take time for contemplation and reflection. This year, I've been reflecting on Catholicism. Rather on the complicated interfaith nexuses between Catholics and Jews. In large part, of course, this is because of the beatification May 1 of Pope John Paul II.

Non-Jewish man returns chametz

A non-Jewish man who took possession of the chametz given to him by a haredi Orthodox community just before the start of Passover returned the goods shortly after the end of the holiday.

A seder for broken Jews

The big fashion of recent times has been to rewrite or repackage the Passover haggadah to fit our individual tastes. If youre vegetarian, there is the Haggadah for the Liberated Lamb; if youre interested in Buddhism, there is the Haggadah for Jews & Buddhists: A Passover Ritual; if your thing is spiritual traditions, there is The Santa Cruz Haggadah: A Passover Haggadah, Coloring Book, and Journal for the Evolving Consciousness; for all you social justice lovers, there is Arthur Waskows Freedom Seder: A New Haggadah for Passover; if you are gay, you can try Like an Orange on a Seder Plate: Our Lesbian Haggadah; and if you dont believe in God, dont worry, you can get The Liberated Haggadah: A Passover Celebration for Cultural, Secular and Humanistic Jews.

This seder honors todays Egyptians

Jews have long celebrated freedom as part of the Passover seder, but any look at a newspaper these days provides a reminder that the topic is as relevant as ever.

The unblessed cup

As we finish our Passover preparations, lets take a moment to ponder: What has sustained us this past year and enables us to join a seder table? What has kept and nourished you and your family through the continued difficult economic climate and the other vicissitudes of life? What, too, continues to sustain the Jewish people, our people?

Israel closes West Bank for Passover

A Beatles Passover

Last night my family and I went out with some friends to the Pantages Theatre, where we took a musical journey back in time. For over two hours, the Broadway production of Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles took us through the tumultuous 1960s and the great Beatles songs that came to define that decade. From the innocence of I Want To Hold Your Hand to the provocative Revolution and the contemplative Let It Be, we danced, laughed, cried and Twisted and Shouted to the sounds and sights of a unique era in time.

Rabbi sues D.C. board over Passover election

A rabbi is suing the District of Columbia Board of Elections for running an election on the last day of Passover. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom says in his lawsuit that efforts by the board to expand early voting opportunities for observant Jewish voters in a special election for an at-large council member and two Board of Education members are inadequate.

Poet’s Haggadah story

Every year at Passover, families around the world pull out their Haggadahs for their Seders, and whether they use a traditional text, a modern one, or even Maxwell House, the story and the words remain largely the same. But one man, Rick Lupert, saw an opportunity to do something more than produce just another slight tweaking of the classic text. And thus, the Poet's Haggadah was born.

Ethiopians to hold large seders in Israel

Some 5,500 Ethiopian immigrants will celebrate the seder together in 16 absorption centers throughout Israel. About 1,000 of the new Ethiopian immigrants have arrived in recent months and will celebrate their first Passover in Israel, according to the Jewish Agency for Israel.

A Pesach plea for prison reform

Last week, here in Los Angeles, we read with horror of an inmate in a local county jail who was strangled to death in his cell. This inmate had been complaining to a judge that he was being hassled by other inmates. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions have plagued L.A. Countys jails for more than 30 years, along with a culture of violence and fear that includes prisoner-on-prisoner assaults and the use of excessive force by deputies.

Passover in Prison

A few weeks before Passover, there was a moment when Shirley Friedman looked worried that there might not be enough food for everybody. Friedman, who calls herself a full-time grandmother, is expecting to feed three dozen people over the first two nights of Passover at her table at home but on that Thursday morning, she wasnt worrying about a problem that could be solved by another trip to the supermarket.

African stamps honor Jews who fought apartheid

Every year, Jews around the world tell the story of the Israelites liberation from slavery in roughly the same way. And every year, familiar props help bring that story to life.

End, dont extend, the scandal of hunger of America

Before we tell the Passover story, before the Four Questions and all the rest of the elaborate rituals that mark the Passover celebration in Jewish homes across the globe, we raise a piece of matzah, the unleavened bread that is meant to remind us of the haste with which we fled Egypt some 3,500 years ago, and we say (or chant): Let all who are hungry enter and eat.

Quebec grocery store removes, puts back Star of David

A grocery store in southwestern Quebec returned a Star of David over a display of Passover products after removing it following a customer's complaint. The Metro grocery store in Westmount was ordered Sunday by the chain's head office to remove the Star of David over the Passover display after a customer complained that it was religious propaganda. But it put back the star Tuesday after about a dozen phone calls from angry local customers, according to the Montreal Gazette.

First-ever translation of Yiddish cookbook yields Old World treasures, New World advice

When a rare volume of a 1914 cookbook written in Yiddish for American Jewish housewives came into the hands of Bracha Weingrod, the once popular but forgotten book began its long journey from dusty oblivion to celebrated translation. The thick, worn copy of Dos Familien Kokh-Bookh, now newly translated by Weingrod as The Yiddish Family Cookbook, is the only Yiddish cookbook on the market.

Bring something new to the table

A Passover haggadah is something like an article of clothing a great many styles and sizes are available, it can be tailored to suit ones own needs and tastes, and we can always make one of our own. The readings and rituals, stories and songs that decorate the observance of Passover are as diverse as the Jewish people itself. Now, as Jewish families around the world prepare to sit down at the seder table, here are a few new and noteworthy examples.

Michal Ansky celebrates springs bounty on Passover

Heres the first thing you notice about Michal Ansky: Shes beautiful. Tall, with long black hair and a strong, lean Israeli build. In the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey, where we meet, people do double takes. Shes not quite famous here yet, though Fox TV selected Ansky from among all the cooking experts in the world to be one of three judges on its hit program, MasterChef. Padma Lakshmi, watch your back.

More cluck for your passover buck

I have always enjoyed researching and developing new dishes to serve during Passover, but have you ever heard of Mock Gefilte Fish? Because everyone loves chicken, I am constantly looking for new and different chicken dishes to prepare, and I find that each recipe has a story all its own.

Taking a modern approach to Passover desserts

At Passover, because tradition rules, Im willing to bet that, at most seder tables, undistinguished sponge and honey cake, coconut macaroons and probably some dried fruits cooked into a compote are trotted out at meals end, met with no discernable oohs and aahs of rapture from those at the table. Why not bend tradition a bit in the name of making the last course as delectable as the dishes that precede it? Adhering to the albeit fluid rules that proscribe chemical leavening, and flour- and corn-based products, theres still a whole world of modern and delicious desserts that can grace the Passover table.

Reaching Out

In our postmodern age, its fascinating to note that Jews still widely observe several biblical-era practices. Two among them stand out: brit milah (ritual circumcision) and Pesach (Passover). Its also worth mentioning that Elijah the prophet plays major roles during both. Elijah is the honored guest at every circumcision, with a special chair the Kisei Shel Eliyahu reserved for him. He is also the honored guest at every Pesach seder, with the fifth cup of wine the Kos Shel Eliyahu poured especially for him, and he is treated to a special welcome when we open the door for him.

A few new Passover haggadahs, and a facelift for an old favorite

Nearing its 80th birthday, perhaps it was time the most printed Passover Haggadah in history had a major facelift. The Maxwell House Passover Haggadah, which has had more than 50 million copies published, hits the shelves -- and supermarkets -- this spring featuring its first new English translation since 1934, the year it was originally printed.

Passover Argentina style

In Argentina, although Passover comes in the fall, the celebration is much like that observed by Jews in the United States, and the food is similar to Eastern European dishes, but with a South American flair. Argentina has a Jewish population of more than 250,000, making it the largest in Latin America. Their ancestors immigrated from Poland, Russia, Syria, Turkey and North Africa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most of the immigrants spoke Yiddish, formed settlements such as Moiss Ville and Villa Clara, and became gauchos (cowboys).

Pretty for Passover

Quickly approaching are those festive spring nights marked by a plethora of matzah, reclining comfortably in your chair and just maybe hitting your neighbor over the head with stalks of green onion during the Dayenu (an Afghani and Iranian Passover tradition). Whether youre hosting a Passover seder this year or joining one, you wont want to be without these beautiful essentials that are sure to remind you and the rest of your table that those once enslaved have now become like kings.

Desperately seeking Chametz

When our ancestors fled slavery in Egypt thousands of years ago, they didnt have an opportunity to plan for the trip: They gathered what they could, grabbed their unleavened bread and high-tailed it out into the desert. Today, when we prepare for Passover, which commemorates their exodus, we have a little more time. In fact, the preparation for the holiday is nearly as significant as the holiday itself. Clearing ones home of chametz is an ancient twist on the concept of spring cleaning.

Passover 5770

How different this night is from all other nights! The familiar singsong of Mah Nishtanah reverberates in Jewish homes throughout the world on Passover eve. What Seder would be complete without the beloved Four Questions chanted by the young and the young-at-heart? These questions are the literary device that introduces the maggid, the embellished Exodus narrative that is the essence of the Pesah celebration. Put another way, the Passover Seder is the quintessential Jewish storytelling experience.

Quinoa Ingrains Itself in Passover Meals

Its been about a decade since quinoa first broke into the Passover market, and while the Andean nongrain grain still meets with some culinary and rabbinic skepticism, it is making inroads on both fronts, securing its spot both at the Passover table and in fine restaurants.

The Next Big Question...

The seder is all about questions. The evening starts with the famous four, asked by the youngest present, but if the seder is what it should be, it doesnt stop there. Everyone around the table from the youngest all the way to the oldest is encouraged to dissect, debate and shamelessly pontificate over each bit of the haggadah and over any part of Jewish tradition, ideally well into the night.

Civil War Jews Who Weren’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie

At the Passover seder next Wednesday evening, our children will recite the traditional question, How is this night different from all other nights? But the adults at the table are the ones who appreciate how this night really is different not only from the rest of the year, but from the Passover seders of the past. As I started writing my third novel about Jewish spies during the Civil War, I began to wonder if American Jews had ever sat down at a seder where every part of the meal was served by slaves. As I discovered in my research, they did.

The Diet Cycle One Womans Journey to Get Off the Bike for Good

One day, almost three years after the birth of my youngest child, I looked in the mirror. I hated what I saw. I had been carrying around baby weight through four births, at least thats what I kept telling myself. It seemed, though, that I was suddenly able to see clearly that this wasnt baby weight at all. I was fat, plain and simple.

A Seder Is Not a Seder Is Not a Seder…

My Passover odyssey began in 1991, when I decided to organize a community seder. It would be homemade affair in a rented room, with my children, cousins and friends creating the decorations, skits, music and conversation topics.

Making Songs Stick

When Mara Elena Arenson rolled her plastic crate of matzah, horseradish, tambourines and rhythm sticks into the preschool classroom at the Reconstructionist synagogue Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades, the 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds excitedly called out her name. They knew that the lesson would be interactive: Theyd be able to sing, sway and play instruments to the music of her guitar. What they didnt know is that Arenson, a cantorial student at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Los Angeles, uses the principles of the Suzuki rhythm method with the hope that these songs will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

Thinking Outside the Matzah Ball Box

When the Israelites rushed out of Egypt, Pharaohs men on their heels, they hurriedly bundled their belongings, food included, to carry as much as they could on their backs and donkeys. Seeking to nourish themselves throughout their desert journey to the Promised Land, they rolled together unleavened bread crumbs, eggs and oil to create a round, nutritious finger food. They heated these in water jugs, along with chicken bone scraps, to preserve them and give them flavor. And thats how matzah ball soup was born.

Exploding Knives, and Other Hazards of Kashering

Let me just start by admitting that I probably didnt really need to put the knife directly on my burner. But it was the first time in a very long time I was kashering anything, and I had conflicting guidance from my rabbi and my mother, and I thought I needed to drop a hot metal object into my hot water urn to make it kosher for Pesach (I was totally wrong. Do not try it at home.).
