Rebbetzin Miriam Adler-Huttler, a distinguished rabbinic figure in Los Angeles, died on Jan. 3. She was 78. A seventh-generation Jerusalemite and a descendant of the Zhvill and Lelov Chasidic dynasties, she was born Oct. 30, 1934, the only child of Grand Rabbi Elazar Adler and Rebbetzin Bilhah-BatSheva. Raised in Meah Shearim until the age of 9, Miriam and her mother left Palestine in July 1944 to join Rabbi Adler, who had established a congregation in the West Adams area after relocating to Los Angeles in 1938.

As bombs dropped over Germany, aerial photographer Arthur Oxenberg would lean out of a B-17 Flying Fortress with his camera to snap a photograph. His photos were a way the U.S. Army Air Forces could tell whether bombs hit their targets.

Occasionally down the years I’ve winced at being labeled a “self-hating Jew” because my reporting from the Middle East was perceived as tainted by hostility toward Israel. It wasn’t true, of course, but I figured it came with the territory, meaning that I was deemed biased because I reported accurately what was happening on the other side, with the Palestinians.

Daniel Silverman ascended to a higher realm on Feb. 6, 2012. He was born in Chicago, IL in 1928 and lived there until 1967 when he moved with his family to Los Angeles, CA (where he still resided). Danny worked at MCA/Universal in the publicity department for more than 40 years. Dan was a dedicated member and Vice President of Congregation Etz Jacob, where he chaired the Education Committee.
