TV veteran Jack Bender will attend the Emmy Awards this Sunday. He's nominated again this year in the category of Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his work on the hit ABC show "Lost," for which he is also an executive producer.
If you're a single 24-year-old gal looking to meet a preferably Jewish single guy in Los Angeles, you'd think a good pick-up line might include the words "I work for The Jewish Journal." After all, what better way to convey to the guy-of-interest that you're a fellow MOT? But you'd be wrong.

More fashion for a cause? You betcha. After all, why "Livestrong" when you could "Get Sababa?"
Lance Armstrong's yellow "Livestrong" bracelets to benefit his cancer foundation are already passé. But hoping to start a fashion craze of her own, 27-year-old Traci Szymanski has launched Get Sababa, a clothing line in progress, complete with the now-requisite rubber-band bracelets. (Hers are blue-and-white tie-dye.)

Becky Wahlstrom isn't a Jew, but she plays one on TV. As Grace Polk on CBS's "Joan of Arcadia," the blond Chicagoan looks refreshingly unlike your stereotypical Jewish character. Of course, Grace's character wasn't supposed to seem Jewish from the start. The contrary, politically outspoken, rebellious teenager in black has been packed with surprises since her character debuted in last year's first season. Recently, it came to light that her mother is an alcoholic. Toward the end of last year, it was revealed that her father was a rabbi and that, at age 16, she was finally giving in to his pleadings that she have a bat mitzvah. Tonight, then, is the big night. Grace will become a woman in the eyes of the Jewish community at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26.

There's something very American about a book that claims to be a "guide to life." There's also something very Jewish about it.

I'm riding shotgun in Hawthorne's truck, and we're on our way to jump out of a plane together. As the truck bumps along to Perris Valley, I'm having one of those moments where the same word keeps repeating itself in my head: "requiem." Requiem, requiem, requiem. My brain has been saying it all day.

It's a wintery Saturday night in Hollywood, and I am having one of those quintessential L.A. outings. Sitting in the dank, stonewalled basement of the landmark Magic Castle, I am watching psychokinetecist David Gamliel move objects with his mind. Our well-dressed group stares at the short, intense, balding, goateed Israeli as his hands hover over a pair of eyeglasses that sit on a green felt table. His hands begin to make slow circles in the air, and soon the glasses levitate and circle, mimicking his hands' movements. There is an audible sigh. He never touched the glasses -- we all watched.
Erin Falkowitz, 25, daughter of Ellen and Michael Falkowitz, and Jake Jundef, 26, son of Bracha and Moshe Jundef, met in the summer of 1997, long after the laws of probability say they should have. Both of them went to UC Santa Barbara and had numerous mutual friends -- Jake had even dated a few of them. But it took some random circumstances to get the two acquainted and dating. Six years later, they're engaged to be married.
If one follows the traditional Jewish philosophy that a lifetime is 70 years, Dr. Hy Goldman was symbolically reborn on April 22, 2000. It's a philosophy Goldman likes, and thus followed to the next logical conclusion -- that he should reaffirm his commitment to Judaism with a second bar mitzvah at the age of 83 (age 70 plus 13). That his grandson, Jason, decided to join him by becoming a bar mitzvah for the first time, at age 21, only added to the uniqueness of the occasion.

Shawn Tavakoli reads Women's Wear Daily, and he's not ashamed to admit it. He also reads Vogue, Mademoiselle and most other beauty magazines. It isn't pleasure reading he's doing. It's research.
You could say actress Barbara Minkus has been studying for her current role her whole life. She's always been rather petite and has always loved to sing and perform.
Kathy Angel Eisenberg and David Eisenberg first met at Rose Nails salon in Woodland Hills. David was taking his 16-year-old daughter to get a manicure and Kathy was bringing her kids with her for her own appointment. The kids were "bouncing off the walls," Kathy said. David quickly assured her that as the kids get older, "it only gets worse."
And with that opener, a romance was born. The two were married this past August and are working on creating a personalized storybook to record their love story for posterity.

When Andrea Kalinowski was a little girl in Montreal, her father had an unusual ritual. Any time the family stopped in a little roadside town, he would find a phone book and search for Cohens. He would inevitably get excited when he found even one, amazed and proud that his people were everywhere.
However, Kalinowski was more skeptical about her connectedness to Judaism. "What really turned me off from Judaism was that it was difficult to be Jewish," she said.
