I believe in books and that Benjamin Franklin was right when he said the library is the greatest American institution. I am a library evangelist and was delighted to be in Los Angeles for the “It Happens Every Spring: Annual Library Lunch” at Stephen W. Wise Temple organized by...

“WINE, WOMEN & COMEDY”
In honor of Rosh Chodesh, a holiday dedicated to women, tonight’s performance is dedicated to the women who make us laugh. Hilarious, poignant and risqué, these comedians make up the SheBREWS — eight fabulous female comics who dominate the...

More than 2,500 people signed up to participate in a global Shema flash mob as part of a campaign to promote religious pluralism in Israel.
The gatherings early Monday afternoon came two days after Conservative Jewish congregations were asked to dedicate a recitation of the...

Today, the baseline in any Orthodox community is that women do not participate in public ritual at all. In the average Orthodox synagogue, there is not one thing that women do which is part of synagogue performance. Their presence is not felt and their voices are not heard. The...

The legislature in Bahrain has appointed a Jewish female parliamentarian to serve as deputy chairwoman of the foreign affairs, defense and national security committee.
Nancy Khedouri, the third Jewish Bahraini to be appointed to the upper chamber of Bahrain’s legislature, was selected on Sunday by her fellow lawmakers to serve in the position, according to the Gulf News.
Bahrain’s ambassador to the United States, Houda Nonoo, a former member of the 40-member upper house of the legislature called the Shura Council, also is a Jewish woman.

Note from Asher Lopatin: Some of the arguments in this article parallel my own arguments challenging Rabbi Shaul Magid’s ideas regarding specific laws in the Jewish tradition.

Yiddish signs briefly sprouted on Brooklyn trees asking Jewish women to step aside when a man walks down the sidewalk.
The plastic signs bolted to trees in the Brooklyn neighborhood of South Williamsburg read, in Yiddish, “Precious Jewish Daughters: Please move over to the side...

Panic Ensemble: Jewish Women (have more fun)
April 3, 2008 | 6:00 pmCan we talk about gender? Again? Or maybe not.
We have been having a conversation in the Jewish community about gender for more than three decades.
During that time there have been some remarkable changes: the ordination of women rabbis, the proliferation of egalitarian prayer...

September 27, 2007 | 8:00 pmOur Jewish Spinsters
Rob Eshman's piece, "Our Hindu Widows" is literally unbelievable (Aug. 10). I am a marriage-minded 52-year-old SJM. I have never been married and want to find my match and start a family. The only really practical advice I have ever heard is "Buy a mansion in...
August 9, 2007 | 12:00 pmI know too many beautiful, brilliant single Jewish women in their 30s and 40s.
I hear too many stories about the lack of available Jewish men, the first dates who are too lost or too pathetic, the fights over marriage and children that end the relationship and send the woman, now a...

The media had a grand time recently when tens of thousands of Jewish women stopped wearing their wigs out of concern that they might contain hair that had been offered to an idol. The more revealing story, though, lay not in the deep dedication to the Second Commandment but in the...

In a rehearsal room at the Odyssey Theatre, Colette Freedman propped her electric-blue high tops on a chair and good naturedly laughed at herself. "I'm truly flawed," the 30-ish actress-playwright said. "I am totally a hypocrite."
Well, not totally. While her "Deconstructing the...

November 11, 1999 | 7:00 pmThere's something inherently sexy about a woman who owns a dog. I don't mean a pug or a poodle. I mean a bruiser; a canine that's muscular and intense, a beast that succumbs to her quiet command. Unfortunately, the same really can't be said for a single woman with a cat.
May 27, 1999 | 8:00 pmWhatever the rest of America made of last week's news that Loehmann's discount department store is declaring bankruptcy, for American Jewish women, it is very, very sad.
