For 34 years, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) has been holding seders for senior citizens across the Los Angeles area, sponsoring services and feeding those who have nowhere else to go during one of the most widely celebrated holidays on the festival calendar.

JFS awarded Obamacare contract to reduce hospital readmissions

Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles is heading up a collaborative effort, funded by President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, to reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions for Medicare patients. The newly formed Los Angeles-Mid-City Integrated Care Collaborative will involve three hospitals and 14 nursing facilities, as well as a roster of community-based organizations in providing the medical, social, case management and mental health services needed to keep the elderly at home after they have been released from a hospital.

The new Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco is a hip amalgam of modern art. Daniel Liebeskind's peculiar architectural dazzle looks like a giant Rubik's Cube in metallic steel, standing on its tip beneath the city's downtown skyscrapers. Beside it is the Jessie Street Power Substation, a brick and terra cotta structure in the classical revival style, a landmark building first erected in 1881 that Liebeskind adapted to the project.

The state has the third lowest rate of home ownership in the country. Housing prices put pressure on rents, which rise even as stock-derived income, which cushioned the costs for many, disappears. Competition for affordable housing is intense; waiting lists are long.
