The chant coming from Bet Tzedek Legal Services employees and their supporters as they marched on the streets of Koreatown on Aug. 22 was unified: “All day, all night, health care is a human right.”
Rebecca Catherine Nichols, daughter of Merle N. Stern and James H. Nichols Jr., died on Oct. 5 at 29.
Surrounded by dancing bodies, a 20-something took off his shirt and waved it around his head, bare-chested, simply following the instructions of hip-hop artist Nelly, the performer on stage. “It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes,” Nelly sang, the lyrics from his 2002 hit song, “Hot in Herre.”
Barristers filled the ballroom to celebrate Bet Tzedek and the people who devote themselves to public service and social justice. More than 1,000 of Los Angeles' most talented and generous lawyers pooled $2.3 million for "The House of Justice" during the 20th annual Dinner Gala on Jan. 22. They demonstrated their support for an organization that annually provides myriad legal services free of charge to 10,000 Los Angeles residents in need.
