Doheny Meats buyer Shlomo Rechnitz on business, philanthropy

Fifteen years ago, Shlomo Rechnitz co-founded TwinMed, a wholesaler of medical supplies serving nursing homes. Since then, Rechnitz has founded, or bought, and grown a number of other businesses, including Brius Healthcare, now the largest operator of nursing homes in California.

Chabad claim denied

A California appeals court has affirmed a lower court’s ruling denying a claim from Chabad of California Inc. of an $18-million pledge the local Jewish nonprofit group said was promised to it by philanthropist Roland Arnall. Chabad said Arnall promised to donate the money before his death in 2008.

New Chabad telethon chief follows in his father’s footsteps

Rabbi Chaim Cunin, 33, executive producer of the telethon and CEO of Chabad of California, may represent a movement that dates back to the 1700s, but on a recent August day he wasn't wearing a dark frock coat. Instead, he sported casual attire: a blue button-down shirt, a brown tie and a yarmulke, that, when flipped around, bore the trademark dancing rabbi logo.

A ‘Final’ Decision Courts Trouble

A religious court ruled in favor of Chabad of California late last month, awarding it ownership of Marina del Rey properties contested by the Living Judaism Center (LJC), but the ruling has only exacerbated the battle between the two organizations.

The crux of the highly charged dispute centers on which of two rulings -- one backing Chabad of California and the other in favor of LJC -- is the final one that should be recognized under halacha.
