  • 9 times Donald Trump has been compared to Hitler

    March 8, 2016 | 11:55 am

Donald Trump is not happy with the Hitler comparison.

Prominent people have lately likened the Republican presidential front-runner to Adolf Hitler for his comments targeting Mexicans and Muslims and for his populist politicking style.

Most recently, Trump has had his...

  • Letters to the editor: The Berlin Wall, Maher/Affleck/Harris II, voting and more

    November 19, 2014 | 11:35 am

Chipping Away Another Brick in the Wall

Thank you so very much for the excellent description of the celebration (“Lessons From a Wall,” Nov. 14). I lived in Germany almost continuously from 1971, when I went as a U.S. soldier, until I returned to California in 2004. Nov. 9, 1989,...

  • Maher vs. Affleck vs. Harris Round 2

    By Rob Eshman

    November 5, 2014 | 1:42 pm

I have one word for Ben Affleck, Sam Harris and Bill Maher: Rematch.

The three of them began an argument on Oct. 10 on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” that came to an end when the episode concluded. It needs to continue.

At issue was whether Islam is, in Maher’s view, a...

  • Controversies roil UCLA, Berkeley campuses

    By  Tom Tugend

    October 30, 2014 | 9:41 am

“Leaked emails reveal partnership between Hillel, PR firm,” read the headline on a story that made the front page of Wednesday’s Daily Bruin, the lively UCLA student newspaper.

The plotline for this story may seem a bit arcane for those not up-to-date on campus politics, but the...

  • Hollywood Zionists are alive and well

    By Danielle Berrin

    August 24, 2014 | 1:23 pm

In late July, when Israel and Gaza were in the throes of violent conflict, and international condemnation of Israeli military behavior had reached fever pitch, only a token few in the Hollywood community had anything to say about it.

But one month later, that appears to have...

  • Celebrities in the Israel-Gaza Twitter crossfire

    July 18, 2014 | 2:34 pm

First, there were the celebrity tweeter and deleters. Now it’s the misogynistic tweet.

As the Israel-Gaza conflict continues to spark a proxy war on Twitter and other social media, numerous celebrities are getting themselves caught in the crossfire.

    Earlier this week, both...

  • Letters to the editor: Bill Maher and Dennis Prager on global warming

    April 9, 2014 | 9:49 am

    Bill Maher: It’s Complicated

Bill Maher infuriates me, but I want to have a beer with him. I don’t even want to change his mind. We all have people in our lives who we love that make us crazy. There is even a name for them: Family.

OK Bill, what will you have? I’m buying.

  • Bill Maher: The confident blasphemist

    By Danielle Berrin

    April 2, 2014 | 10:48 am

At 2 p.m. on a balmy afternoon in  March, Bill Maher, the comedian, political commentator and host of HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” was just beginning his day. He’d only been awake for three hours, though even that was unusual, since he rarely rouses before noon. “You’ll plug...

  • Bill Maher: Jay Leno is like Israel

    March 13, 2014 | 10:29 am

Jay Leno’s induction to the TV Hall of Fame on Tuesday was preceded by a spirited and vaguely controversial introduction from Bill Maher, who compared the former “Tonight Show” host to a a small Middle Eastern country some of you may have heard of.

“Jay reminds me a little of...

  • Bill Maher Defends Jay Leno at 2014 Hall of Fame Gala

    By Nicole Behnam

    March 12, 2014 | 4:11 pm

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. –  Bill Maher inducts Jay Leno Tuesday night at the 23rd Hall of Fame gala hosted by The Television Academy.

A-list talent, media moguls, and network executives gathered together at the Regent Beverly Wilshire to celebrate the 23rd annual Hall of Fame...

  • Letters to the Editor: Bill Maher, Witold Pilecki, ‘Lincoln’

    December 12, 2012 | 10:18 am

    A Word to the Unwise

I didn’t get around to reading the Dec. 7 issue of the Jewish Journal until late last night, and when I saw the Danielle Berrin column, “Q&A With Bill Maher,” the words of Joseph Welch came to mind when he said to despicable Sen. Joe McCarthy, “Have you no...

  • Bill Maher on Israel, uncut and uncensored

    By Danielle Berrin

    November 29, 2012 | 5:10 pm

Earlier this week, I asked political commentator and comedian Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" to weigh in on the outcome of the 2012 election and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Below is the uncut, uncensored interview in which he talks about America's...

  • Bill Maher at the LA Press Club

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    June 16, 2009 | 2:49 pm

Edward Headington has posted video from the L.A. Press Club awards dinner. I referred yesterday to the comments of Bill Maher and Arianna Huffington. You can hear Maher’s remarks above and Huffington’s here.

And you can see the back of my head, just to the right of the stage, at the beginning.

  • Bill Maher at the Oscars

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    February 22, 2009 | 11:57 pm

My friends’ Twitter and Facebook updates have been blowing up with reaction to Bill Maher’s presentation at the Oscars for best documentary, during which he trashed God and bemoaned the ignorance of the Academy for overlooking his irreligious documentary, “Religulous.”

    My favorite...

  • Religious POVs: Maher or Spurlock?

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    October 22, 2008 | 4:11 am

Morgan Spurlock is a genius. Sure, his shtick is shlocky. And, yeah, he might be reusing the formula he created for “Super Size Me.” But his film last year, “Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden,” is an insightful look at just how vile religious extremism is. In essence, the film,...

  • Bill Maher and religion: lost in transition

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    October 1, 2008 | 2:11 pm

Don’t tell my wife, but I do often make mistakes, and occasionally they end up in print. This happened last week with my feature on Bill Maher’s “Religulous.” The inaccuracy in the article didn’t reflect poorly on Maher, but on me, because I was the person I misrepresented.

    In the...

  • Bill Maher, Catholic and Jewish, master of guilt

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    September 25, 2008 | 7:11 pm

And we’re back. Joining me again is my guest, Bill Maher.

Now, this is Bill’s sixth appearance on The God Blog in as many weeks; I suppose the visits will stop soon after his new docu-drama, “Religulous,” is greeted at theaters by protesters Oct. 3.

    Yesterday I mentioned that even...

  • Bill Maher gets downright ‘Religulous’

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    September 24, 2008 | 10:35 pm

Bill Maher is on his soapbox, looking like a lunatic and holding court in London's Hyde Park. A crowd forms around the American talk show host, who is disguised in glasses and a funny hat as he preaches that aliens have infected our souls and only Scientology provides the answer.

  • Even Bill Maher can be irrational

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    September 24, 2008 | 6:30 pm

My feature/review of Bill Maher’s new film, “Religulous,” is off to the printer and will appear in tomorrow’s Jewish Journal. It’s a decent piece and, if nothing else, includes the pretty cool, ultra-pious photo seen here (now my desktop background). In short, I liked the movie...

  • Questions for Bill Maher

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    September 15, 2008 | 1:49 pm

I’m interviewing Bill Maher today about his new film, “Religulous,” which skewers the faithful in theaters Oct. 3. I rather enjoyed the movie, though it didn’t change my opinion of God or his followers. But I know Maher engenders strong feelings among his fans and critics, so I wanted to invite readers of The God Blog to submit questions in the comments section that they’d like me to ask Maher later today.

For a refresher on the documentary’s contents, read this post. You have about four hours.

  • Early thoughts on ‘Religulous’

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    August 27, 2008 | 2:52 pm

Well, my suspicions were correct: Religion comes off as looking at best ridiculous in Bill Maher’s new film “Religulous.” But the early buzz has also been correct: Brilliant.

And so I’ve spent the past 13 hours wondering if there was something wrong with my enjoying the movie. It’s...

  • Bill Maher, space gods and schizophrenics

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    August 26, 2008 | 8:41 pm

“You can’t be a rational person six days of the week and put on a suit and make rational decisions and go to work and, on one day of the week, go to a building and think you’re drinking the blood of a 2,000-year-old space god. That doesn’t make you a person of faith,” Bill...

  • What to make of Maher’s ‘Religulous’

    By Brad A. Greenberg

    August 13, 2008 | 9:48 am

Bill Maher, my favorite Irish Catholic Jew after David McGrath Schwartz, has a documentary coming out Oct. 3 titled “Religulous.” It doesn’t look ridiculous to be but, as you can imagine, there is a whole lot of holy hand-wringing going on.

I’m likely going to interview Maher in the next few weeks for The Journal, but, for now, all I have to offer is the above trailer, which resembles a religious bloopers reel.

  • Maher and Snow spar at American Jewish University, Journal veteran Tugend praised as ‘Distinguished

    By Danielle Berrin

    May 8, 2008 | 6:00 pm

Maher, Snow Spar at American Jewish University

Calling Bill Maher "politically incorrect" is too kind. Bitingly snide, bitterly sarcastic, at times crude, caustic and offensive, he is also horribly funny.

Tony Snow declared himself "the sacrificial lamb" the moment he stepped on...

  • Realists

    By Rob Eshman

    September 27, 2007 | 8:00 pm

Click big arrow to see Bill Maher at a loss for words. It's rare you see Bill Maher at a loss for words. A while back I found myself in producer Peter Guber's pre-house -- or whatever you call a large sumptuously furnished home where you host guests just outside your real home. It...
