Howard Takes the Ice Bucket Challenge

By Rob Eshman

After being called out by Matt Lauer and Jennifer Anniston (and, to zero effect, the Jewish Journal staff) Howard took the ice bucket challenge (see below) and made it his own.

Three thoughts:

1) In about 30 seconds he found a way to do something everyone has now done in an original way

2) His kicker, which I won't spoil for you, is what makes Howard Howard: it's a sick, funny, inappropriate and topical call back.

3) For a 60 year old, he's ripped

  • Howard Stern’s Ice Bucket Challenge

    By Rob Eshman

I almost didn't want to challenge Howard to the Ice Bucket Challenge.  He's dismissed it on the radio, channeled his inner Ben Stern to deem it nonsense, and basically let it be known that it wasn't for him.

And I get it:  we love Howard is exactly because he doesn't follow the... read on

  • Howard Stern on Israel and Gaza

    By Rob Eshman

    July 28, 2014 | 4:38 pm

Howard Stern wants Hollywood to speak up for Israel.

“I don’t know why more prominent Hollywood people don’t speak out about what’s going on there,” Stern said on SiriusXM Howard Stern Show today. “They’re all afraid.”

    Stern himself is anything but.

Last week, when a regular... read on

  • Mayim Bialik on Howard Stern

    By Rob Eshman

    February 27, 2014 | 4:47 pm

You could just tell there was a mind meld between Howard and Mayim Bialik when she appeared on his show Feb. 25 (I just heard it on replay.  Love that Sirius app).

This is what's so remarkable about Howard.  His show pivoted from a deep discussion with Mayim to a very in-depth... read on

  • The Story Behind Artie Lange’s Breakdown

    By Rob Eshman

    February 27, 2014 | 4:27 pm

A reader of this blog sent me her story on Artie Lange, which I'll repost below.  It's a sanitized promotion-oriented piece, true, but I still read it with interest.  I haven't followed Artie since he left Stern, and I wondered what the real story was behind his apparent suicide... read on

  • A Howard Stern Birthday Bash Blog

    By Rob Eshman

    January 30, 2014 | 11:15 am

I devoted my column in this week's Jewish Journal to Howard Stern.  Second time in 13 years of columns.  I wanted to do something timed to his high-profile birthday bash, and the connection between Howard and a very controversial, interesting piece in last Sunday's New York Times... read on

  • Terry Gross v. Howard Stern

    By Rob Eshman

    July 24, 2012 | 3:02 pm

This is a blog post with an unfair headline.

In her interview with Andrew Goldman in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, NPR Fresh Air host Terry Gross has very nice things to say about Howard Stern.  Here’s the good parts:

AG: When you interviewed Gene Simmons in 2002, he said some... read on

  • Howard Stern and the Parents Television Council Fallacy

    By Rob Eshman

    May 15, 2012 | 2:30 am

Why do journalists covering Howard Stern’s debut on NBC’s America’s Got Talent tonight keep quoting the Parents Television Council opposition to Stern as somehow important?

Howard Stern went national tonight—and America’s most reviled DJ began the transformation into... read on
