Living with Islam

The West standing against Islamic fundamentalism, rather than indulging it, will allow the religion to evolve, argues Reuel Marc Gerecht in the Weekly Standard.

Monty Python’s brilliant Life of Brian, which was deeply offensive to some Christians, is, really, at the center of who we are as Westerners: Through deduction, induction, and merciless wit, we question everything. Don’t we really want to see Muslims, especially in the Middle East, have the religious self-confidence and tolerance to make the Life of Muhammad?

Rage, but also self-criticism

The Muslim world has ignited over the anti-Mohammed "film", but the violent reactions have also been a source of anger and embarrassment, writes the Economist

Hassan Nasrallah... provoked an angry backlash by staging a giant rally to protest against the film. Critics not only charged him with manipulating the incident to ingratiate himself with Sunni Muslims, among whom Mr Nasrallah’s star has waned with the region-wide rise of sectarian animosity. They called him a hypocrite for condemning America as a shielder of blasphemers while ignoring the offences to God committed by his ally, Syria’s regime.
