A Jewish student at a Maryland high school was asked to prove that he wore a yarmulke for religious reasons.
Caleb Tanenbaum, 17, was asked by the administration of Northwood High School in Silver Spring to provide a letter from a rabbi explaining why he wore the plain, off-white knitted kippah, Patch in Wheaton, Md., reported.
Caleb, an Israeli by birth, decided recently to wear a kippah, according to the news website.

Something was a little fishy about this. The teacher(s) said that they had never seen the child wearing a religious head covering before. They said it looked like a tam—what Jamaicans wear to cover dreadlocks. I found the kid on facebook and sure enough, he has dreads. Maybe he should have claimed that his head-covering was for his Rastafarian faith instead. I am not Israeli or Jewish, but I know that area of Montgomery County very well. I stand corrected if this is another style of kippah that I have never seen. It does look a little bit like something is not above board in this particular situation.

I attended this high school in the 70’s and I am appaled by the request for a rabbi’s note explaining why he was wearing a kippah. Silver Spring, and particularly the neighborhood around Northwood High School, used to have a significant Jewish population, including some very Orthodox shuls. I cannot fathom how times have changed so dramatically that an incident like this could occur.
