Ben Bastomski, 23, was born and raised in Santa Barbara in a traditional Jewish household, with regular attendance at the Young Israel of Santa Barbara Congregation, where his family has a longtime affiliation and his father Jacob serves as President.  After graduating from Santa Barbara High School he attended Brown University in Rhode Island, finishing in 2010 with a B.A. in Philosophy.  Ben then made the decision to indefinitely postpone enrollment in law school in order to volunteer in the Israel Defense Forces.  In November 2010 he was drafted into the Nachal Infantry Brigade, and now serves on active duty in the brigade’s 50th Airborne Battalion.  This blog is his attempt to provide a window into his life as a volunteer.  To read all of his posts, click here.
