Sonia Peres, Israeli president’s wife, dies

Sonia Peres, the wife of Israeli President Shimon Peres for 66 years, has died.

She died Wednesday in her Tel Aviv apartment at the age of 87.

Sonia Peres was a private person and rarely was seen at political events frequented by her husband.

In 2007, when Shimon Peres moved into the President’s Residence, Sonia Peres chose to remain in the family home in Tel Aviv.

Sonia Peres moved to prestate Israel from Poland in 1927 at the age of 4 and met her husband shortly afterward in the Ben Shemen Youth Village.

She served as a nurse in the British army, working in an army hospital near Cairo and later as a driver for the army throughout Europe.

Sonia and Shimon Peres married in May 1945, and were the founders of Kibbutz Alumot. They had three children.
