Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann
I wonder how much airtime Michele Bachmann (R.-Minn.) would get if she didn’t look the way she does. I wonder how much of Sarah Palin’s political appeal arises from her physical appeal.
I have a feeling that wondering this will get me in hot water, but what the hell.
I think Michele Bachmann is pretty. I think Sarah Palin is pretty, too. I’m not saying they’re smokin’ hot babes. I’d reserve that for someone younger, like Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly. If I were in my 20s, I suppose that having any corporeal thoughts at all about these women would be, as the kids say, ewwww. But from my boomer perspective, they’re real lookers.
Now, given my politics, you would think that my knowing what Bachmann and Palin say and stand for would be a total turnoff, but my familiarity with their wingnut views seems to cause no diminution of my spontaneous appreciation of their assets. Even Dana Perino, who as press secretary defended the indefensible George W. Bush, makes my head turn.
All these ladies regularly say things that are — to use Professor Jon Stewart’s formulation — evil or stupid. Bachmann, for example, has called the Obama Administration a “gangster government”; she’s proposed a witch hunt for “anti-America” members of Congress; she’s said that Lexington and Concord, where the shots heard round the world were fired, are in New Hampshire; her claims about Obama’s policies on everything from taxes and monetary policy to the environment and health care have earned her more than a dozen grades of Barely True and Pants on Fire from Politifact.com, the independent, Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking site.
But as Michele Bachmann inches toward a bid for the GOP nomination for the presidential nomination, and as Sarah Palin launches a media frenzy about her White House intentions, I have to think that their plausibility as candidates doesn’t simply derive from their Tea Party cred. After all, Virginia Foxx (R.-N.C.) and Jean Schmidt (R.-OH) also adhere to the most extreme right-wing positions of the Republican Party’s base, but I don’t see MSNBC lavishing on them the kind of base-riling scorn that Bachmann and Palin get; they’re not asked to keynote all the big creationist-birther-AK47 confabs.
In a politainment era, looks — even sex appeal — matter. On the male side, this could account for Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) still getting mentioned as a presidential contender, even though he’s said he’s not interested, in contrast with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), whom nobody is mentioning as a 2012 possibility and whose cheekbones aren’t remotely as chiseled. It also could explain Jon Huntsman’s appeal, and Mitt Romney’s frontrunner standing in the polls. And in an inverse way, it makes the effort by Roger Ailes and Rush Limbaugh to draft N.J. Gov. Chris Christie for the Republican nomination completely plausible (who could be more authentic than a guy who looks like Chris Christie?), and it lent gravitas to the Mitch Daniels’ boomlet (real wonks don’t have great hair). Speaking of hair, Donald Trump could be the outlier that proves the theory.
Let me stipulate, in case any Bachmann or Palin fans are reaching for stones to throw at my glass house, that I am not a 10. I’m not a zero, either. I know that my looks haven’t gotten me anywhere, and they also haven’t stopped me from getting anywhere, though an Abercrombie job interview would likely have been a sobering exception.
If you think my take is nothing more than a nerd’s revenge for an unrequited crush on the prom queen, I’ll be glad to forward your messages to my therapist. And if you think my focusing on their looks is shamefully sexist, I guess that just goes to show that the political correctness cartoon doesn’t apply only to liberals.
In the end, it could be that it’s hard to take my eyes off Bachmann and Palin, not despite their political views but because of them — that is, because the gulf between how pretty they are and how doggie they talk is so shocking. It’s a bit like that character type you sometimes see on a TV show, the sweet little old lady who swears like a stevedore. It wouldn’t be remarkable if some crone had a potty mouth. But the verbal foulness is ironically endearing when it comes from the last person you’d predict. Maybe this is too big a stretch, but I can’t help thinking that the reason Bachmann and Palin don’t repulse me is the same reason I’m so fond of Betty White.

Yawn…
Conservatives would support any good candidate that promotes a society based on self-reliance, independence and limited government, to wit, anti-nanny-state. Margaret Thatcher would be an immediate hit. The attractiveness of the two mentioned is a negative, because most question their capability based on their own limitations—-‘if they are beautiful, they must be dumb.’ and vice versa.
If Bachmann and Palin weren’t Republicans would you be wasting your time trying to find a pseudo-analytical argument against them?
Are you discriminating against us uglies?..beauty is only skin deep…leave it to you men…many beauties might be empty-headed…lol.
Republicans are dedicated to bring as much misery and suffering to as many people as
possible and their favorite targets are children, elderly and disabled. They have a 100% success rating in their goals as every time they exercise their power, the whole country
suffers re:2000-2008. They make the garbage and then leave behind for others to
clean up after them, abnd blame others for their filthy mess.
Their outrageous statements do not make these ladies - or anybody else - less electable. Quite the contrary. Politicians thrive on the drama. Looks definitely make them more visable and more credible to many voters. OK So what ya gonna do about it? The average American doesn’t have the patience to read the instructions on a child proof container. The article IS trivial because it’s about a small symptom of a much larger issue. Good start though.
By the way you might take out the Democratic political slant. The issue is way too important to “turn off” a significant portion of your readers.
Both Palin and Bachmann have a chance to oust the Obamanation in 2012 and you just can’t stand the fact that they are powerful, commanding and attractive women.
BTW: It just so happens that Palin’s and Bachmann’s wingnut views support Israel’s right to exist, unlike Obama who advocates for her destruction.
What else can you expect from an academic who’s the “Norman Lear Professor of blah, blah?” But speaking of appearances: considering his lack of qualifications, thuggish advisors and troubled background, would B.O. have any political career at all if he didn’t have dark skin? And hadn’t managed to invent himself as “black” when he’s 50% white, 40% Arab Muslim and only 10% black?
Palin supporters, including me, like her for her views. We’d support her even if she looked like Michelle Obama. Got it?
Marty, never met your wide, but I get the feeling you are working out some Freudian frustration. Get some fresh air, and don’t worry, honey. As we we get older we all look the same.
Marty—
A waste of ink and time.
These two women are vile, selfish people who have no sense of the commoneweal, Tikkun Olam or a morality that
connects people to each other beyond a quarterly profit report.
Time to stop giving them ink. Let them hang themselves.
Sorry fot the typo: wide = wife.
Logician, hello our lost friend. It got cold and lonely here without your love. Welcome back.
Will Kaplan comment next on Nancy Pelosi’s high cheek bones or Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s curly blond locks. I suspect not. If I continue to feel like I am wasting my time by reading these “articles,” the Jewish Journal will find a nice place in the spam folder of my computer.
This is not a waste of time…
I need help to get back to Israel in a few weeks. Equine Assisted Therapy Ranch at Moshav Revaya. I will be teaching University students Equine Assisted Therapy and using it to help “At risk” teens. They cannot give me a salary, just good food and a place to stay.
Still trying to raise funds to help Israel with desert cattle that fit their environment. Ranchers pushed off their land cattle mutilated and killed. Israel needs Texas Longhorn desert cattle that has horns and knows how to use them.
When Israel asks for help I am there. Where are you?

By the way, Mr. Logician, are you aware that Michelle Bachmann has cared for something like 20 foster children? How does that compare to your recent “tikkun olam”? Does that sound “selfish” to you? Taking care of that many children is beautiful by any definition.
Liberal love of women:
“[Hillary Clinton] has a ventriloquist for the patriarchy with a skirt and a vagina” (Jane Fonda)
“Women don’t trust Hillary. They see her as an opportunist; many feel betrayed by her,” Susan Douglas in a May In These Times article titled “Why Women Hate Hillary.”
“The truth is that Senator Clinton has a woman problem” (Anna Quindlen, Newsweek)
Liberal love of women #2:
“The whole put-a-woman-in-the-White House seems too abstract and theoretical, a middle-class luxury.” (Jen Moseley, Feministing on H. Clinton)
“The downside, though, is that the [liberal media] hates Hillary Clinton, most of them. Hate is not too strong a word.” (Joan Walsh, editor-in-chief of the liberal Web site Salon.com)
It`s a pretty good assumpotion that were they liberals Marty Kaplan would reject suggestions that their success is due to good looks.
And yet, he may somewhat right. After all, were JFK`s and Clinton`s good looks not contributing factors in their rise?
Men or women, good looks are an asset to those politicians that have them.
What a disgusting, sexist article! If these women were Democrats instead of Republican I don’t think we would see such nonsense. I wonder if the good professor agrees that Barack Obama was only put forward as a candidate because he has dark skin AND is good looking? Can you imagine that parents spend serious money on sending their children to USC to listen to the likes of this?! What is this country coming to?
Robin Rosenblatt, please stop schnorring for money.
Marty Kaplan. You do need a feminist lecture on the male gaze. You do need to figure out that nearly all American men over a certain age (me included) have sexist attitudes programmed into them. You look at those 2 idiots because they’re good looking. Get over it.
Davidka, you like Palin’s views? She has none at all, just recitations.
well the myseterious thing about sarah palin. is that she looks a lot like, your grandmother chaooah here in TheTorah. i do not think it is a coincidence, that she looks a lot like sarah carney in i da ho.
jimmie c boswell. How many of you are there in I da ho?
I do not dispute that these to ladies are “very easy on the eye” - but lets keep a sense of perspective.
There are many of us that believe the main attribute current occupants the White House have is that they are very pretty and photograph well.
good point and well made. most men are not aware of how looks influence them whichever side of the aisle they’re on. funny how conservatives tend to blast liberals for being liberal. they are a narrow-minded bunch.
btw, my compliment is directed to Marty.
Marty is onto something which most of us dismiss as unimportant, and probably underestimate. Many studies have confirmed that height is strongly correlated with success, a measure I find slightly embarassing. No one would deny Karl Rove’s brilliance but how many would rate him high in sex appeal? Suddenly all these sexy republicans.Marty didn’t mention Scott Brown who was one of america’s ‘sexiest men’ There were many fewer strikingly attractive Republican candidates in the past, and in an age where media exposure can raise someone from total obscurity overnight, looks may be more fundamental than we may want to think. Schwarznegger for governor anyone?
to: mendel on 5/27/11
how would i know, i ain’t never been there.
Stupid article, but let me quote “Professor Jon Stewart”: “All these ladies regularly say things that are — to use Professor Jon Stewart’s formulation — evil or stupid. “
Right, like traveling to all 57 states. Writing 2008 in the Queen’s guestbook, at some point, you’ve made enough money, corpseman, speaking in Austrian, Cambridge police acting stupidly, Israel is a strong friend of Israel.
‘nuff said. Sheesh!
Wow. Lots of people need to cut way back on the caffeine. I liked this article. I love Marty Kaplan writing on any subject, the premise has merit, other intelligent researchers have analyzed this subject, it creates dialogue, and as a crone with a potty mouth, I like finding me in an article about pretty women.
Hey, it’s the election stupid and like all far left papers, who live and die for B O, they will be continuing to attack the right on whatever issues they can make up.
Marty is onto something in his looks-based analysis. Would Barack Obama have been elected if he looked more like Al Sharpton? Obama received the Democratic nomination in the same month that he appeared simultaneously on the covers of Esquire and GQ.
As for Palin, Republican pundit George Will predicts that if she is nominated in 2012, Obama will take 44 states in the general election.
does not make any difference, which evil person you elect to lead this nation. it shall still happen, as predeemed by G-D here in TheTorah. even if you elected a pekinese, it would still happen as said by G-D. mental freedom, does not give you physical freedom from G-D here in TheTorah. for TheWhole Torah is still, going to all happen here in IT.
I couldn’t agree more. Anyone who doesn’t admit it is not being truthful; just hopeful. My late mother once looked me in my eyes and said very seriously, “Susan, never underestimate the power of sex. It is such a strong force; it makes people do things you would never expect.” The first time I saw McCain and Palin, airways, I could hear my mother!
Technology and gadgets may transform our world, but human nature doesn’t change. And I also agree with another comment. I am hopeful they will hang themselves.
Clever is not smart and snarky is not even clever. If you don’t like their ideas say why. ARTICULATE Marty - it’s what skilled communicators do. Did you ever run a state? Can you balance your check book? Hiding behind ideology and well placed friends won’t help you. Had you written this about women who were Democrats, I would say the same thing. Your approach is to demonize these two human beings, because of sex and their looks. Do you have a mother? a sister? a wife? a daughter? Do you have any shame? To Rob Eshman, how would you feel if Marty wrote these things about your wife? Not the Rabbi’s politics or religious perspective but her looks and her femininity? I am disappointed.
i am not! a respector of politics or the religions of men. i am a respector of G-D’S truth, here and now still in TheTorah today.
and it is true, no matter what you say. or who you elect to say it. this is all still going to happen like G-D predeemed here in TheTorah. to this world mentally refusing to see we are all still here in TheTorah again.
and i did not get this from any one in this world. but everything i have, is from TheG-D WHO actually came to speak to me here in TheTorah agains.
i have no doubt we are all here in TheTorah again, all again from HaShem G-D. TheG-D WHO actually came to tell me about the woman, as adam here in TheTorah actually again.
so my belief is not based, on faith only. but on the fact of HaShem G-D, actually coming to speak to me. for the about half an hour, as TheHisMale child. i had no clue then, what HE was saying to me. because nobody taught to me TheTorah, according to HIS Command to the whole world.
there is no point in just giving just ten out of of 613 commands. if you leave out an 11th command, to teach to your children TheTorah, before any thing else. from TheG-D of no new testaments, here in Only TheTorah in TheHappening.
i did not voulenteer for any of this from G-D. i was voulenteered by G-D, whether i wanted to voulenteer or not. just like Yonah, refusing to vouenteer for neenevah. still got voulenteered, by G-D.
Rafael Guber - Your insulting, “superior” comments are just what you accuse the writer of being - snarky, and worse!
ARTICULATE? Why? The views of these women are all too well-known and if you choose to defend them you are no better than they are. Kaplan’s opinion is based on their vile, ignorant and hateful views, not on their being Republicans (though I can’t think of any Democratic women who share those traits).
Anyway, he didn’t demonize them or criticize their “looks and femininity”—he was speaking of his reaction to them. It’s called an insight and it is the result of thinking.
.....................................
Laura - “Obamanation? powerful, commanding and attractive women? Palin’s and Bachmann’s wingnut views support Israel’s right to exist, Obama who advocates for her destruction.”
no, Laura, these women are horrible. if you like them, it’s no wonder you don’t appreciate Obama, who is much more likely to protect Israel’s right to exist than these hateful airheads.
......................................
Davidka - your evaluation of Obama is insane and based on ignorance. no wonder you don’t like academics.
B.O. didn’t invent himself as “black” - society decides that.
“he’s 40% Arab Muslim and 10% black?” his (brilliant) non-religious Kenya-born father makes him 50% African.
If you like Palin’s views I wish her on you — but not the rest of us. Michelle Obama is beautiful inside and out.
she may go down in history as our finest first lady.
Jews have suffered from bias for centuries. why perpetuate it on others? Turn on your mind and turn off FOX TV!
This article is a transparent attempt to put these women down by basically calling them bimbos just because they are good looking. It’s the same thing Time Magazine did by putting Palin on the cover in running shorts and SNL did by calling Palin ‘hot’ when she was on the show. These people don’t mind committing sexist offenses when it suits them.
Interesting that the male side works in reverse. The Obamedia is playing up all the Republican good-looking male airheads.
Regarding Andi3 reaction to my comment, I did not defend anyone’s politics. Jews should no better than to attack anyone based being a member of a class, group, gender etc. Kaplan sought to dehumanize and objectify two women, because his ideological hunting license tells him which people are a protected class and which people are are “opened season.” Marty knows that odds are low that he will be attacked on campus for attacking women whose politics are unpopular. Its not principled its cowardly. By the way Andi3 - if you really want to be taken seriously, have the courage to use your real name.
Ben - “calling them bimbos.” he didn’t call them names. read again.
“Time Magazine and SNL sexist offenses?” it’s called commentary and humor — too subtle?
The so called “Obamedia” is 90% conservative-owned. that’s why we’re so misinformed.
Rafael - “his ideological hunting license” “open season.” GOP pro NRA-talk?
“women whose politics are unpopular.” politics or racist rants?
sorry, you’ll have to insult me anonymously.
No, he didn’t call them bimbos. He just described them as bimbos. He didn’t disagree with their stated positions. He just characterized them as stupid and evil and doggie-talking. Time Magazine didn’t call Palin unqualified. They just ran her legs on the cover. In case you don’t know, the picture editor is as much a commentator as the copy editor. SNL did exactly what Kaplan is doing here; that’s why I brought them in.
The Pew Institute on Journalism documented the role played by the media in the campaign, with good stories for Obama and bad stories for McCain/Palin. The media is the lifeblood of a campaign, and it all went for Obama. Not anymore by the way.
BP - He just described them. They ARE bimbos, and all the rest.
Time Magazine “In case you don’t know” I do know and it was appropriate.
SNL did satire. Kaplan raised a legitimate topic.
“good stories for Obama and bad for McCain/Palin” really????
the largest media are GOP’s FOX TV and Wall Street Journal.
glad to finally see someone tell the pragmatic truth about the “good looks” issue with Palin and Bachmann. let’s “face” it, if they didn’t have good bone structure and attractive smiles, the conservative press (foxnews)couln’t sell them to their idiotic audience.
Hosanna! M. Kaplan finally writes a provocative column-although as usual the thrust is all about Marty and result his ( perhaps independent) base threatens to jump-ship. Might say more but can’t risk spurring another 15 comments from jimmie c. boswell (funny he doesn’t sound Jewish). And can you believe it, somebody missed The Logician!
Aunty Mame
Andi3
I suppose what bothers me is the dishonesty of he article. If Kaplan just called them bimbos, we could have a conversation. Unless you are a campaign consultant, talking about Chris Christie’s weight of Palin’s looks just means you really have nothing political to say.
I have no problem saying that Obama is an affirmative action pretender with a phony birth certificate; that the Obama Administration a “gangster government”; that some members of Congress do oppose American Constitutional principles etc. The Left had no problem saying things on that order and worse in the Bush administration; I haven’t checked the Kaplan archives but I predict that right now.
Time Magazine was in the bag for the Democrats of course, but they do have a pretension of being a journalistic organization. When commentary hits the front cover then they are out of the closet.
As for SNL’s satire, I am saying they did it in her face when she was on the show.
The Pew Report did actually show Fox to be fair and balanced in its reporting during the campaign with the entire rest of the field skewed. Read the report.
i still defend what G-D, came and said to me. that it does not make any difference, who you mentally elect not here in TheTorah again. this shall still all physically happen, as G-D says in TheTorah. since we are all physically judged, by our mental attitude. for or against G-D, still here in TheTorah again.
Re: “Andi3”(“insane… ignorant,” etc.)
Society didn’t “decide” BO is black.BO’s (ghostwritten) books show he chose that identity at Oxy.
BO is half-African, but that part is almost all Muslim Arab and only a small part Negro.
His father “brilliant”? I don’t admire a polygamist, immigration fraudeur and (according to his kids)child beater.I am unaware of documentation of BO Sr’s “brilliance.”
Michelle is not “beautiful inside and out,... and our finest first lady.” She has an nasty streak that her dozens of handlers can not disguise, has accomplished nothing as first lady, and is ugly enough to unseat a dragoon.
@Andi3 - You call Palin and Bachmann “hateful airheads” and say they are “vile and ignorant” with “hateful views?”
Well, your comments echo Kaplan’s insults, and the Logician who wrote about Palin and Bachmann, “Let them hang themselves,” and Susan Amerikaner who wrote, “I am hopeful they will hang themselves.”
Your comments clearly prove who is hate-filled. I can assure you that it is neither Palin nor Bachmann.
Ben - Obama phony birth certificate? - say no more. that says it all — about you.
The Left had no problem saying worse in the Bush administration?
Left (mostly) states facts; hard right uses unfounded insults—you’re a perfect example.
SNL did it when she was on the show? - she asked to be on the show. having her on
meant they laughed with her rather than AT her.
The Pew Report found Obama’s press coverage was 40 percent neutral, 37 percent positive and 23 percent negative.
Fox News Channel stood out for being too critical of the president ... no one TV network was singled out for being
too easy on Obama.
...............................
Davidka - Society counts anyone with a measure of black ancestry as “black”. the person doesn’t get to “decide.”
anyway, your facts are wrong, dictated by prejudice. and who cares how much of what? black? Muslim? Arabic?
it’s the person that counts, not the label. You’re a perfect example.
(ghostwritten)? accomplished nothing as first lady? unaware of documentation of BO Sr’s “brilliance” ?
- you are UNAWARE of many things.
Michelle is beautiful (I’ve met her) and there are lots of Jewish people in Chicago who will vouch
that, unlike you, she has no nasty streak.
...........................................
Mr. Againster - “as usual the thrust is all about Marty”—that’s called writing in the first person.
...................
Aunty Mame - boswell (funny he doesn’t sound Jewish). neither does Aunty Mame, so?
....................
Laura - apologies to the Logician, Susan Amerikaner for overlooking them.
if you have ears and a brain, you can assess Palin and Bachmann yourself.
If you continue to defend them, surely you are missing one or the other.
no point continuing this discussion because the 5 of you are incapable of thinking.
@Andi3 - you use insults to attack me, “if you have ears and a brain, you can assess Palin and Bachmann yourself.
If you continue to defend them, surely you are missing one or the other.”
and insults to attack others, “no point continuing this discussion because the 5 of you are incapable of thinking.”
Your statement is an example of the typical liberal argument suffused with ad hominum and invective.
As usual, no facts accompany liberal name calling.
To my conservative friends: Are you trying to change the hearts and minds of these liberal mother lovers? Get a life. What a waste of time! Meanwhile you are giving Marty more attention than he deserves for this piece of crap

well when your adopted, during a war with a mad man. and nobody knows, who your actual parents are. you don’t get the option, of knowing your real name. you take the name that is given to you, and that is all you can do. unless G-D, came and said otherwise.
G-d Bless Sarah and Michelle. anyone but the empty headed ignorant liberal anti-Israel dems, especially the knockout Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a total embarassment and Obama supporter (enemy) to the Jewish people. (Allen West is pretty too, btw.)
They are pretty (thank G-D) but they are not getting air time just because of that.
In fact, Palin is even trying to use her own sarahpac.com and avoid the mainstream media.
So it is not the media that is giving them airtime. We the people attended their rally in spite of the evil press trying to discredit them.
Hey author, what if Obama is not black?
RT
Yours is the best response. Obama has nothing to qualify him for office but his color, which made him a political human shield for the Democrats who could then call all political opposition ‘racist’, and install Obama as an affirmative action candidate. After Obama, there is no one in the US or Kenya who could be called unqualified to be President of the United States.

I’m sorry you wasted your time writing this trivial column…but mostly I’m sorry I wasted MY time reading it; I should have known better from the head.
