I have questions I want answered. If anyone has can answer them for me, please do. It’s important to note that I am not interested in opinions. Opinions are what got us into this mess. I want answers. I want to know when we decided as a nation, that it was ok to not be decent to each other.
I want to understand how it is possible that just because a woman has different opinions than you, she can be compared to Hitler. I need for someone to explain to me how a young girl can go for a run, and be raped and murdered by a man who never should have been released from prison.
I want to know how we can commend people for having faith, yet persecute them for practicing religion. I want to know how I am supposed to raise my son to care about this country, when the people who lead this country, and shape his future, can’t play nicely together.
I need for someone to help me understand how the people in my life with the happiest and most loving of relationships, Andy and Patrick, Bill and Bill, Scott and Paul, Leslie and Michelle, are not allowed to get married, when people who never should have gotten married, are allowed.
Explain to me how we can send men and women to a foreign land, to protect our freedom and liberty, when all of our citizens are not treated equally? How can we send a young man to Iraq, have him lose his limbs, then let the bank take away his house? How can you teach a girl that she can do anything, then not allow her to go to prom with her girlfriend?
When did labeling something, or someone, fascist, become a blanket statement for things that liberals don’t like? When did liberals become so intolerant and mean spirited? When did conservatives become labeled as the devil for having an opinion that differed from the liberals? When did every difference of opinion, need to be a fight?
When did we start labeling each other a liberal or conservative, rather than just American? When did it become dangerous to talk about politics or religion? When did it become acceptable to call each other fat, stupid, ugly, slut, gay, or retarded?
I want someone to tell me exactly what it is that makes this the greatest country in world, when we are incapable of the most basic act, extending kindness and decency to one another. When did we stop paying attention to history? Why do we keep repeating mistakes, rather than learning from them? When did we forget?
Human beings are capable of sitting in a room, and having a million things to talk about, without ever mentioning religion or politics. You can have a meal with someone, without having to discuss their sexual orientation, banking statements, age, race or weight.
Adolf Hitler murdered eleven million people. Six million Jews, and five million additional minorities, including blacks, homosexuals, gypsies, and Jehovah Witnesses. For no reason. He may be responsible for killing the person who could have perhaps discovered the cure for cancer, or who could have taught us to be kind.
Hitler altered the history of the world by being evil. I want to know how any sane person can make a comparison between this disgusting man, and Sarah Palin. How is possible that anyone would think it is okay to align this woman with a monster, for no other reason than they don’t agree with her? What is everyone so scared of?
My worldview has forever been changed, by simply running into a woman on the street, and having a conversation. Even though everything changed for me when I met her, this is so much bigger than Sarah Palin and her politics. At the end of the day, this has nothing at all to do with Mrs. Palin. We can’t blame her for everything that is wrong with this country.
At some point the answers to these questions won’t matter. What is really at the core of my confusion is why we, as a country, just can’t stop attacking each other. When are we going to stop being so judgmental? When we will stop hurting each other? When will we remember what it means to be decent, kind, tolerant and forgiving?
Someone needs to start a new movement. We must reinvent ourselves with simple acts of kindness to our fellow man. It’s really not that hard. Be kind. We can all do it, and there is no act of kindness that is too small, or does not go unnoticed. How can we collect millions of dollars for Haiti, and then hate each other at home?
We need a grand gesture from the people at the top. I turn to you Michelle Obama. You are a hero to me. Not because you are a Democrat, or because you are married to the President and live in the White House. I admire you because as a single mother, who sacrifices everything for my child, your devotion to your family is inspiring.
Let’s have lunch. You, Sarah Palin, and me. Let’s talk about our kids, clothes, shoes, the weather, and the dog. Let’s put aside all the things that make us different, and talk about the million things that connect us. Let’s be grown ups, let’s be ladies, let’s have lunch. You can send a message to the country that we must be decent.
Let’s invite amazing woman from across America to join us. I’ll bring Hillary Clinton, and my mom. Let’s start talking with other, not at each other. Let’s leave politics to the politicians, and religion to our clergy. Let’s believe in whatever we want. Let’s love whomever we want. Let’s be decent, and respectful human beings, by allowing everyone to have the freedom to believe, choose, and worship, whatever they want.
I know that we cannot expect to change the world. What I do believe however, is that we can make our tiny little piece of the world, a better place. If you are reading this blog, then share it. Send it to everyone you know, regardless of race, sex, religion, or political party. Let’s take it viral, so more people can have the opportunity to answer the questions.
My blog is called Keeping The Faith. The past couple of weeks has knocked me on my ass, and caused me to look at that title, and reevaluate what it means. In the beginning, it was about finding my true love, and him being Jewish. It was about not sacrificing my faith, for love. it turns out that in the end, the title is much more profound than that.
The dictionary defines faith this way: Faith is the confident belief or trust in the truth or trustworthiness of a person, concept or thing. If I look at the title of my blog with this as the definition of faith, it makes more sense. I am not struggling to keep my religious faith. That is secure. I struggle with having faith that my son can safely raise his own children in this country.
What I am doing by Keeping The Faith, is believing and trusting in the truth. Not only my truth, but the truth of the leaders of this country, the truth of allowing my son to achieve all of his dreams, the truth that my soul mate is out there looking for me, and the truth that we can be a decent nation. Without faith, there is no hope, and without hope, we have nothing.
I’m not giving up. Not on myself, or on any of you. We can do this. The time has come to stand up, take responsibility for what we are all doing wrong, and embrace each other because that is the right, and easy, thing to do. We can restore America to the greatest country in the world. Together, and united, we must keep the faith.

Well said! I will retweet this.
Lift up your eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh your help.
“The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
Those who know Your name trust in You.
For you, O Lord, have never abandoned anyone who searches for you.”
(Psalm 9:9-10)
“Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
“Fear not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them; for the Lord thy God, He it is that doth go with thee, He will not fail thee nor forsake thee.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
“Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.” (Psalm 31:24)
I love these sentences: When did conservatives become labeled as the devil for having an opinion that differed from the liberals? When did every difference of opinion, need to be a fight?
When did we start labeling each other a liberal or conservative, rather than just American?
Thanks for the mental vacation you manage to provide when I read your blogs. Have a good weekend.
Oh, Ilana, haven’t you learned by now? The moment you said something nice about Sarah Palin is the moment you became a target.
I am one of those Democrats who support Sarah Palin because she appears to be the only leader in America who has consistantly stood up to schemes and rackets benefitting organized crime in the federal government, both sides of the aisle.
Also, since I’m pro-choice, I can live with her Constitutionalist view that abortion should not be made illegal, but should be an issue decided by individual states. When she appointed a former board member of Planned Parenthood to the AK Supreme Court over a pro-life candidate (because she was most qualified) I saw that it was true, she governs under the rule of law regardless of what her personal beliefs might be.
Same on the gay marriage front, she supports a state by state decision, thus gay marriage at least exists, as opposed to the President’s preference it be decided on a federal basis and ban it altogether from the country.
Those were my two sticking points, otherwise she shared Hillary’s stance on Israel, on increased exploration, drilling, refining and distribution of domestic fossil fuels in tandem with alternative energy, AND, unlike currently, underwrite the closed manufacturing plants aross the country to produce oil and natural gas equipment (made in China) with a gradient to increasing alterntive energy equipment (instead of buying it from Germany, Spain, China, etc.)
I am glad she noticed that the same people who brought us Enron electricity commodities have designed the carbon credit commodity to trade on the CHICAGO exchange. I’m glad she has always recognized Global Warming and has pointed out the multiple flaws of the science the commodities people that directly link it to man, as opposed to reviewing the hard data of how climate change occurs naturally, and continue to be environmentalists but not a party to creating yet another bogus derrivitave security for the bad guys to reap billions before collapsing another string of financial houses and banks.
I think there is very good reason why Hillary Clinton has never had a bad word to say about Sarah Palin and why Rahm, Axelrod, Schumer, Dodd, Frank, Pelosi and Reid, et al, having nothing but— But of course, now we know the afforemention colluded to knock Hillary out, including encouraging MI and FLA (Clinton strongholds) to disqualify themselves, Schumer reporting everything in her campaign to Rahm, the voter fraud, et all.
So while I’m waiting for the DNC to become legit again (please tell President until he fires Emanuel (and his brother Dr. Death, the healthcare czar) and Axelrod it is impossible for us to have any faith in his administration as anything other than an outpost for Chicago organized crime) I am listening to Sarah Palin closely to identify the compromised parts of Washington.
Word has it in Washington that Hillary is running in 2012 with Bayh as VP, which would mean toppling the thoroughly compromised hierarchy of the DNC. I’d vote for that ticket in a New York minute.
The President’s only hope of winning us back is firing Emanuel and Axelrod and putting reputable people there.
I had hoped Hillary would have been the crimebuster but if Sarah is now all the country has, then more power to her. I’m donating heavily to SarahPAC because I trust her choice in some of these races in November. (I was glad the Democratic Congressional candidate in New York won, because it meant Palin and Forbes had knocked out the Pizza Parlor Mafiosa Princess from the GOP). There are far too many of them.
Anyway, keep up the great work. I think people of all faiths would enjoy your column—and I do hope you’ll do a little more investigation on Palin’s career because it has been so hopelessly distorted. Organizing for America has spent what now, $300,000,000 solely to destroy her?
Hi Ilana, great blog, I am a conservative, and if we could see through wiser eyes, and even attempt what you put forth here, it would be huge. As John Lennon wrote, “you may say I’m a dreamer , but I’m not the only one”. Your not the only one Ilana. Civil discourse, think of it. I hope some one sets up that meeting. Thank you and God Bless.
I’m not a big fan of Michelle myself, but I’d like to see coffee with Sarah and Hillary. Without any of the boys butting in, of course.
Do you really want an answer - because it is quite simple. The answer is America needs to get over itself and realize it is not the greatest country in the world. It is a broken country that hands out broken promises. First admit your nation is filled with popmous, self-righteous windbags that do nothing but bicker and deal out pain; and then perhaps you can start fixing that problem.
America is the world leader in rudenss, unkindness, and injustice. The path to healing, like in any 12 step program, is to admit that you have a problem first.
Nice blog, Ilana.
In my opinion, civility went out the window with the growth of the internet. It’s scary to think that the neighbor you get along with so well may very well be a person hiding behind a keyboard, spewing hate and vitriol.
The internet has also enabled the rapid spread of information, be it lies or truth.
I’m sad for my country.
I think the first speech Sarah Palin gave disparaged half of the entire United States of America.
Her rallies became havens for racist haters…and they are her most vocal supporters even today.
michelle obama and sarah palin having lunch? lol—yeah, right. thats like george bush and hugo chavez having lunch together and holding hands—not gonna happen..alot of people say- well, i just dont like sarah’s policy positions—really?, well how is the current prez policies doin? first off sarah palin is no reagan, her policies are closer to calvin coolidge- if someone wants to know what she would be like as prez,(see calvin coolidge).
You should forget the reality show bullshit and comment on social issues. You have an opinion that should be heard. I don’t agree with you on Sarah Palin. I believe she is ignorant, a phony, and caters to a base that is in of itself riddled with hate.
But, you express your point of view well. Forget The Bachelor - concentrate on issues like this. Look at the response you got!
There are a lot more people that should have lunch with the first lady other than celebrity Palin and her Hollywood seeking family. Palin is nowhere near Michelle’s league. I just can’t picture our first lady having gassed-puppy wolf tail sausage salad with the money-grubbing likes of the Palin clan. Sorry.
I think some of you missed the point. It’s not about Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama. It’s about being decent to people that we may not agree with. Never mind. Celebrity Apprentice starts this weekend. I will go back to reality television and my love life. Both of which are far less complicated, and not as exhausting, as trying to get people to simply be nice to each other. Shabbat Shalom and a good weekend to all.
Ilana
pat wrote: Palin is nowhere near Michelle’s league.REALLY?—come on.. michelle, hasnt done anything- NOTHING- ZERO- just like her hubby.. the only thing she has done is (talk, talk, talk) bad about this great country, that many have died for—her hubby dont even have her experiance- thats a fact
Ilana,
You are a noble person and I agree we all should be kinder to each other. When ever and where ever I can, I always remind people that we all belong to the same human family. This may sound Pollyannaish or simplistic, but it’s true because at heart we are all decent human beings. I want to believe the hateful language use by protagonists in arguments are just rhetoric.
I have seen enough kindness and fairness coming from strangers that has reinforced my faith that there’s a loving heart in almost everybody.
So, Ilana, remember that for one hateful person there are tens of thousands of decent and loving people inhabiting on our planet. So keep the faith in this regard.
Whether these ladies have lunch together or not will not change anything about civility in this country. Just look at the definition of “faith” that you put into your blog.
“Faith is the confident belief or trust in the truth or trustworthiness of a person, concept or thing.”
This is the rub. Look at the comments/opinions given - they are filled with the confidence of the writers that what they espouse is the truth whether about a person, concept or thing.
Ilana:
You have dared to ask some very serious questions. Jesus said: (Mt 7:8) “For everyone asking receives, and everyone seeking finds, and to everyone knocking it will be opened.” If you truly, truly, honestly, and sincerely want true answers to your questions, ask for a free home Bible study with Jehovah’s Witnesses. That’s what I did over 50 years ago. WOW!
I wish all the folks who call Sarah a hate-mongering, racist, homo-phobe would start putting forth some hard proof to back up their insults.
How is Sarah a homo-phobe? She, like Obama, doesn’t not agree with gay marriage…but why is she the homo-phobe and Obama isn’t?
One of Sarah’s best friends is a lesbian. The two of them have a close friendship that has endured since childhood years. In fact the two of them went to the University of Hawaii together…and then transferred, together, to the University of Idaho. They were room-mates.
Also, in the very first month of her Governorship, the Alaska Supreme Court ordered that it was unconstitutional for the State to deny benefits to same-sex partners. The Legislature tried to go around the Supreme Court’s ruling, and Sarah was asked to sign legislation that would ban the state benefits. She used her VETO pen and upheld the Court’s decision, stating: “Signing that Bill would have been a direct violation of my Oath of Office.” If she were the intolerant, raging religious theo-crat that the Left says she is, she would have signed that Bill.
As for cries of Racism, she’s married to an Alaskan Native, for Pete’s sake.
Also, Conservatives 4 Palin, explained that as governor, her press secretary was part African-American and two of her senior advisors were Filipino and Korean. Sharon Leighow, Sarah’s spokesperson stated that “Palin did not hire staff persons based on color, but solely on talent and skill. As she put it, “Governor Palin is totally color-blind.”
Indeed, Sarah is one of the few in the GOP that has remained supportive of the Party’s black Chairman, Michael Steele, who is equally enthusiastic about Sarah…
If that’s not enough, go to Motivation Truth…a blog that is written by a black, conservative woman in New York who has spent time with Sarah, and supports her 100%. This woman receives “hate mail” in her blogs too…from people who call her a “traitor” for supporting Sarah Palin.
Here’s her blog from her archive, Ilana, about the first time she met Sarah Palin (she has since spent time with her several times since then…the last time resulted in eggs being thrown at her from a Palin-hater):
Sorry to fill your blog up with politics again, Ilana…but Michael Steele once playfully called her, “The STORM which is Sarah Palin’...and he meant it for a reason. Never a dull moment with America’s Sarah Palin:
Let me show you the problem as displayed right here on your forum:

Okay, right there. This person stated lies and disparaged people she doesn’t agree with as “racists.”
I am a conservative woman. I support Sarah Palin 110%. I am also part Native American, helping to raise an African-American young man. Would I support someone that caters to racists? Emphatically, NO! To describe people like myself and Sarah Palin for that manner as “racists” is ignorant and hateful in and of itself.
Knock it off Ava. You don’t know me, you don’t know Sarah Palin, and you don’t know the people that have been demonized for supporting her.
John McCain picking Sarah Palin was meant to be.
Ilana meeting Sarah Palin on a sidewalk was meant to be.
When the Jewish Bolshevik immigrants were allowed in after WWII and started their “Civil Rights” marches demonizing the majority White Christian population as evil and “liberating” everyone from the horrid unfair USA. It’s a Marxist strategy. Please research it instead of just reacting, since everyone is in such an understanding mood.
