My Search for Manny Pacquiao Leads Me to Ryan O’Neal? Score!

I love Manny Pacquiao. I think he is an amazing human being and it is my new mission to meet him. I want to shake his hand and tell him I love him. By shaking his hand of course I mean I want to hug him. I am quite certain that if this happens, or rather when this happens, I will hug just a little too tight, for just a little too long, and it will border on inappropriate. That said, I don’t care. I love you Manny and I want to hug you.
In an attempt to embrace the sport that Manny loves so much, I’ve decided to go to a boxing event this Thursday night. I’m going because it happens to be in support of a place that I love, Beit T’Shuvah. I am also going because one of the celebrity bouts will be with Ryan O’Neal. “Where do I begin to tell the story…..” of how much I love Ryan O’Neal? I could cry when I think about how much I used to dream about meeting him.
Manny inspires me as a human being to do better, and be better. Ryan inspires me to put on lipstick and fix my hair incase I happen to run into him somewhere. I used to think we would get married and Andy Williams would sing the theme song from Love Story as we danced. Even now, all these years later, I listen to that song after a bad date, close my eyes, and take a spin around my living room, tightly wrapped in Ryan’s arms.
I think Ryan fighting at the event I am attending on Thursday is a sign from God to not give up on my quest to meet Manny. It’s as if I’m being nudged to dream big because anything and everything is possible. It will take all my strength not to jump in the ring and smack whoever punches my beloved Ryan, but I will simply watch, with perfect lipstick and killer hair, hoping that after his fight I will catch his eye, and get a smile.

If you read my blogs, then come say hi. I will be the woman in the corner, with great hair and perfectly lined lips, crying because Ryan O’Neal smiled at her.

I know I will meet and hug Manny one day. I also know I will get a smile from Ryan on Thursday night. By smile of course I mean it will be love at first sight. If addiction can be conquered, then this can happen too. All I need to do is keep the faith.

Sex Toys for Orthodox Jews? MAZEL TOV!!!

It was only a matter of time before the sex lives of Orthodox Jews were welcomed into the world of sex toys and fetish gear. Congratulations to the folks at koshersextoys[dot]net for offering the joys of sex to religious Jews. By not showing a bunch of explicit pictures or videos of how these aides work, Orthodox Jews are able to shop without shame.
The founder is a 25 year old kid from New Jersey, who happens to be Orthodox. He is married, and when he and his young wife were interested in expanding their horizons, there was no place for them to go where they could feel comfortable and safe to shop freely. Their desire to excite each other in new ways is what inspired the creation of the site.
I am not ashamed to tell you that I own some toys. By own them, of course I mean I love them. As a divorced woman in her 40’s, who is currently not in a sexual relationship, I really, really, love them. In fact, if we are going to be honest, even when in a relationship they are a great thing. I would highly recommend them to anyone who has not tried.
I am not one to visit sex sites, but I have seen a couple, and they are pretty raunchy in their sales approach. This site however, is not fancy, no 1970’s porn music playing, and no in your face shocking pictures. They are hoping to expand into lingerie and their number one seller is furry handcuffs. Really? That would not be my first purchase, but baby steps.
Sex is a great thing, and toys can be a lot of fun, so I’m happy for the Orthodox population that this site is available to them. Jews are taught that once betrothed, they should have fabulous sex, and it’s a misconception that they are boring in bed. I think most people assume religious people are not having crazy monkey sex, but they are. Sex is not religious.
Sex is one of the greatest things about being an adult, and it should be fabulous. Good sex is simply not good enough. Sex should be great. Toys are a wonderful addition to a sex life, and that is true whether in a relationship, or handling it on your own. Mazel Tov to those who are doing a little shopping. I’m not Orthodox, but I think this site is terrific.
This site may be the only place where rabbits are actually kosher! Sex should not be embarrassing, or intimidating. It’s a wonderful thing, and changing it up a bit does not mean you are a bad person. People need to lighten up and just enjoy themselves. It’s nice that Orthodox Jews will be able to shake it up a bit, and still keep the faith.

My 5 Dating Questions for Men

I’m a terrible dater, which is unfortunate since I date so much. I don’t date just for the sake of dating, but because I am lonely and want to have a partner for the second half of my life. Plus my son, who is the great love of my life, wants to go to NYU for college and if I am not in a happy relationship by the time he goes to college, he will give up his dream of NYU and go to a local school in order for me to not be alone.
It’s a lot of pressure I suppose, but not anything I can’t handle. I’ve been alone for a long time so clearly I’m not in any rush. At the same time, I will marry my mailman if it means my son will go to NYU. My mailman is kind of mean, but I will do it! I am so proud of this marvelous boy that he wants to give up his dream to ensure I am not alone, and at the same time, I have raised him to be independent and he will go away to school and flourish. He is my favorite man, not the man in my life.
My son is remarkable and while I know he says he will stay with me, he is also on a mission to get me a boyfriend. When he was young he left it up to me, but with less than 3 years until graduation, he is taking things into his own hands and taking a proactive role in my dating life. He wants to know who I’m dating because clearly my selections are not working, and he thinks he can find me someone based on looking for men I wouldn’t choose myself.
I’ve had three interesting dates over the past three weeks. They have left me intrigued, confused, hopeful, disgusted and full of questions. Rather than try to figure it all out on my own, or buy a book by an “expert” who has no expertise, I am going to open it up here. I have 5 basic dating questions that I would like answered, and invite my male readers to share their take on things. Millions of women, myself included, want to know the truth.
Here are my top 5 questions to men who are dating:
1. For every 5 times you say you’ll call, how many times do you really call?
If I say I will call, I will. Why lie? Just say you are not calling.
2. Why do you talk about your exes on a date?
This has been a pattern in my last few dates. If you speak badly of her you’re an ass, if you speak badly of your treatment of her, you are an ass. Just don’t talk about her.
3. Do you want women to pay for dinner on a first date?
If the bill comes and you don’t immediately reach for it, should we offer to pay for dinner? Is going Dutch on a first date what you would prefer?
4. Is a goodbye hug a message that you are not interested?
If you are interested in a woman, will you not go in for a kiss? Is a hug the dating equivalent of a handshake?
5. What needs to happen for you to ask for a second date?
Do you need to have sexual attraction to ask for another date? If you’re not over the top attracted to her, but love her personality, is that enough to ask her out again?
The answers to these questions are not going to miraculously make me understand men, but maybe they will help me get one date closer to finding my Beshert. I am never going to be a good dater. I am however, hopeful that with each date, is the opportunity to find love. Being hopeful trumps being jaded so it’s all good. Will men be brave enough to give us the truth and answer my simple questions? I’m keeping the faith.

How Much Does it Cost to Hate Jews? For John Galliano, it’s $8500.00

John GallianoDesigner John Galliano finally had his day in court. By “day”, of course I mean a whopping 6 minutes. Galliano lost his job at Dior after he was caught on tape in a drunken stupor, bashing Jews, and today he was found guilty of “public insults toward persons on the basis of their religion or origin”, and must pay a fine of $8,500.
I guess that ‘s the going rate for spewing hate in Paris. You can call someone a “dirty Jew face” and it will run you under ten grand, with no jail time. Personally, I’m a little offended. Not offended that he apparently hates Jews when he’s drunk, but that the government of France determined that hating Jews is worth $8500.
I would have been less offended if he had been asked to make a PSA against hate, or made to do community service hours at a Temple, or told to serve dinner at a Jewish Home for the elderly, or asked to visit a Holocaust museum to see what power his words hold. His “punishment” should have taught him something.
He lost his job, but who cares? People lose their jobs every day and while his may have been fancy, it is no more important than the guy at the car factory who lost his job because his boss is a douchelord. Calling people derogatory names and having hate for someone else is not nice, it is however, a fact of life and happens every day.
Telling a Jew that hating them is forgiven if you’ve got a few bucks, is insane, offensive and simply sad. Where is the lesson in his crime? He made a mistake and I forgive him, but don’t add insult to injury and have an entire government tell me that money makes it okay. I wish him well, hope he finds peace, and remembers to keep the faith.

My Teenager Still Needs Me - Thank God

I am raising my son to be a good man. I am trying to present Judaism to him in a way he will not only embrace it, but want it for his own family. I am teaching him to believe in himself, respect women, and take care of the planet. I want him to work hard, and be generous to those less fortunate.
I often wonder if he is getting it. Does he hear anything I am saying? Does he understand how hard he will need to work to make his dreams come true? The older he gets, and the more he ventures out into the world, the more worried I become. Have I done my job? Will he be okay on his own?
This is an exciting time in my boy’s life. He is finding his voice, embracing his passions, and figuring out what he wants to be when he grows up. He is a very kind soul, and extremely funny. I am proud of who he is, who he wants to be, and the vision he has for his future. He is a wonderful child.
I love watching him grow and mature. Beyond loving him because he is my child, I really, really like him. He is fantastic company, insanely entertaining, and a loyal and trusted friend. Not only to me, but to everyone. As much as I love watching him grow up, there are days when I miss my little baby.
As a single mom, I have spent a tremendous amount of time with him and we are very close. I miss him when he is gone. By gone of course I mean that some days I miss him just when he is at school. He is my son, friend, and hero. Last night, for a quick second, I got my baby back.
We were talking about life, school, driving, girls and all the things he has going on. Being a teenager is hard because of all not only the peer pressure, but also the pressure that you put on yourself. While talking, he suddenly became quite vulnerable and I got glimpses of my little boy.
We spoke of his fears and insecurities, and I was reminded that even though he towers over me, he is still just a kid, and he needs me. He needs my input, values my opinion, craves direction from me, and as much as he wants to grow up fast, he is a child who needs his mommy.
When we were talking, it was as if I was in one of those car commercials where the dad is telling his daughter to drive safe and wear her seatbelt, and you see him talking to a 5 year old, only to then have her become a teenager. I looked at this man-child and all I saw was my baby.
One of the great tests of parenthood, is letting your child grow up and go out on their own. I’m trying really hard to take baby steps towards separation as my child inches towards college. I am proud of his independent spirit, but nostalgic for when he relied on me for everything.
I love my son. He has been my greatest joy and being his mother is a privilege. Last night I realized I’ve done a great job, and best of all, my work is nowhere near being finished. He still needs me, and it was a blessing to be reminded in such a lovely way.
I had a great night with my kid. He fell asleep as my little baby, but woke up as a teenager. He went to bed letting me know he needed me, and got up insisting he could do everything on his own. Just like in the car commercial, his vulnerability was a flash and he snapped back quickly.
It’s a real treat to be reminded that he needs me. Our conversation was authentic and natural and came about without force. In just talking about life, he was able to set aside his teenage ego, and allow himself to be a child who needs his mother, and I will treasure the moment always.
I am certain the conversation did not impact my child in the same way it did me. In fact, when I told him this morning that our talk was special, he looked at me as if I was a crazy person with no idea what I was talking about. The teenager is back, my heart is full, and I am keeping the faith.

Divorce & the Single Mother

I have two friends, both with young children, who are currently going through divorces. It is sad for the kids, and sad for my friends. I met with one of these friends for dinner on Sunday night and we talked about all the things she is going through. It was a trip down memory lane for me.
She is experiencing so many of the same things I did and it’s heartbreaking. She wants so much to have reassurance that she will be okay, and I am proud that she can look at my life, and my relationship with my son, and see that it will be. That said, they are in for years of stress as a single parent.
God willing they will marry again, to wonderful men who will love and respect them and their children. As their friend I want to comfort them and tell them it will all be okay and there is light at the end of the tunnel. The kids will be fine and they will be happy, which is a gift to their children.
The truth is, it’s going to be hard. No matter how great the men they meet are, they will always have an ex-husband who may or may not be kind. Their ex-husbands will also meet new people and they will have to deal with not only them, but the new women who will love their children.
This weekend would have been my 19th wedding anniversary. I cannot imagine what that would be like. To commemorate the occasion, my ex-husband decided he would go back on his word, and not pay for something he promised he would pay for. He changed his mind.
I paid for it of course because I did not want my son to be disappointed that he would not be able to have something that he was promised and is important to him. The backing out is annoying and frustrating to me, but after 15 years of this type of behavior, not at all surprising.
I will be attached to this man for the rest of my life because we share a child together, and it does not end when my boy turns 18. There will be a college graduation, a wedding, grandchildren, an Oscar or two for my boy. I will always be connected to him and to be honest, it’s stressful.
I used to be able to remember a time when I loved him, and now I can barely remember a time when I liked him. We have a remarkable child together and for that I am grateful everyday. I am also thankful that he has a relationship with our child, even if it’s sometimes hard for me.
Being a mother is the greatest joy of my life and the job I am best at. It would have been wonderful if my son had grown up with parents in a loving marriage, but those are not the cards he was dealt. I think if you asked him, my boy would say he was sad about the cards he got.
If motherhood is my greatest accomplishment, them divorce is my greatest failure. My son is 15, and I have been divorced for 15 years. His whole life has been wrapped up in my heart and I’ve done it alone. Regardless of what his dad has done, I have done it alone, and the pride is mine.
It’s been a day of reflection for me, with just a dash of bitterness thrown in for flavor. My friends are going to be fine. Divorce does not kill you. Hopefully it makes you stronger and happier for your kids. I will be there for my friends through this transition as others were there for me.
Women must believe we are strong enough to survive the end of our marriages, and be the best mothers we can be. I have been a wonderful mother to my child, and as he creeps towards going off and living his own life, I take comfort in knowing he will be a remarkable man.
I hope he learns from my mistakes and has a better marriage than I did. I look forward to loving the woman that he marries, and spoiling his children rotten. I pray that he thinks of himself as having two loving parents, not divorced parents. For that prayer, I am keeping the faith.

Road Rage, Crazy People & the Perils of Watching Too Much Television

I got a message from my little sister that she was at a police station by her house, filing a report against a man who assaulted her while driving home. She was driving to the store when she saw a man run a stop sign. As he went past her and through the intersection, she honked at him as a warning to slow down and pay attention.
When he ran the sign she copied down his license plate number. She is in Toronto where they have a program called “Road Watch” where you call in and give the license plate number of people you see breaking the law in their cars, and if they get more than 2 anonymous reports, they get a ticket. I freaking love Canada.
She proceeded to drive home and he followed her. She noticed he was behind her and she tried to lose him as she did not want to go to her house because her kids were there. She drove around as if in a maze trying to lose him, but he kept following her. When she stopped at a red light, he got out of his car and tried to get into hers.
He was on the driver’s side, pounding and spitting on the window. He was yelling that she should not have honked at him, and he did not deserve it. My sister, crying, shaking and fearful, left him on the street and drove directly to a police station. She gave them the license number and she was put in a waiting area while they brought the guy in.
The man is in his 30’s, was going through a stressful day, and lost it. Thank God her door was locked, as who knows what his anger would have driven him to do had he been able to get into her car. It’s too scary to think about, and I am grateful she is okay. The police assured her she was safe, and it was a random act from this man.
She was shaken, but brave, and I am proud of her. My little sister is about 5 feet tall, weighs about around 100 pounds, and looks very young. When she is tooling around town i her minivan, with her three daughters, people often think she is the babysitter, not the mother. The schmuck who followed her must have thought she was a child, which makes it worse.
When the police came to talk to her, she asked what was happening with the “perp” and wanted to know if he was “packing heat” or if a “narc” checked out his car for traces of “blow”. My adorable little sister watches a little too much Law & Order. I have a serious addiction to reality television in the same way my sister watches police shows.
The police told my sister they did not think her pressing charges was necessary, so she did not. They also suggested that perhaps she not watch so much television. They thought she was brave, smart, cute, and a little delusional in terms of how she saw the “case going down”. They even told her, “this is not Hollywood ma’am.”
My sister was crying hysterically, and very upset, but when she asked the policeman handling the situation if he was going to “beat the truth out of him”, he could not help but chuckle, just a little. He wanted so much to comfort her, but at the same time had to not laugh. I’m sure it didn’t help that he was smoking hot and could actually have been on television.
I love my sister, am happy she is safe, and able to look back on her day and laugh. We will never know what happened to the man to trigger such a violent reaction to a horn being honked, but we can learn from it. You never know who you are dealing with, so it’s better to just drive, be careful, and mind your own business on the road.
I’m not making light of a serious situation, just keeping it light for my shaken sister. We really must be careful, and aware that people are on the edge. In an instant someone can make a decision that they regret. If you are blessed, like my sister, you can walk away from their mistake. There are many people who are not as lucky.
If we see a reckless driver, call the police and report it, do not honk, or be aggressive with that person. It’s just not worth it. In a time when people are stressed about money, work, and the state of the world, the smallest thing can set someone off, so look after you and be careful. To my beautiful sister, don’t honk, and keep the faith.
