I love reality television. By love of course I mean I am addicted to it like a drug. Not a recreational drug that you did in college and forgot about, but rather like heroin where you are certain if you don’t get it, or in this case watch it, your life might fall apart. Sad and pathetic? Yes.
I watch a lot of reality television and have been writing about it on my other blog, Keeping The Faith, here at the Jewish Journal. My Keeping The Faith blog focuses on dating, sex, motherhood, politics, Judaism, and my never ending search for my beshert.
It felt weird to write about serious issues then have the real housewives of wherever thrown into the mix. So here we are, with my second blog for the Jewish Journal. You can follow both blogs @ilanaangel. Keeping It Real is about reality television and Keeping The Faith is about my reality.
I will write about the housewives, the bachelors, the bachelorettes, the skinny girls, the chefs, the idols, the kids from the shore, and the voices. I will write about all of it, and it may not be pretty because reality television is not pretty. What it is, is addictive, and addictions are generally bad.
If admission is the first stop to recovery, then let me say that my name is Ilana Angel and I addicted to reality television. I think Bethenny is a liar, Danielle is a slut, Rosie has a speech impediment, Teresa’s husband is a loser, the Situation is a pig, and they are all fame whores.
You can agree, or not, but your comments will always be welcomed and shared. I am watching American Idol as I write and think that will be my first blog. If you think Randy Jackson is the cats meow, then be prepared for me to piss you off because he is useless on this show.
Everyone is looking for 15 minutes of fame, or a million dollar paycheck, and I’m hooked power to them. I’ve had such horrible dates lately, staying home to watch reality television, with my cats, is more entertaining than dating. Embarrassing to admit, but I’m keeping it real.

Ilana,
I am a reality show convert- I would mock anyone who told me they watched them, but after I gave birth to my twins and needed to occupy some time while I nursed, I got sucked in.
I watch Bethenny and as much as I want to hate and look away, I can’t. I am intrigued and want to know what she will say or do next. Maybe secretly, I really want her to fail. But I don’t understand why I care so much.
I also watch the NY Housewives in utter disbelief that any of their drama is anything but scripted. Their fights are absurd. I think the reason I tune in is because I might have felt insecure before, but they make me feel like I am the most well grounded, even keeled person.
American Idol is hilarious. The only reason I tune in (aside from really being entertained by the singers) is to see what J-LO is wearing and what gold come out of Steven Tyler’s mouth. Randy is background noise.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these shows!
Good idea! Will the archives be moved here?
I just checked in with Bethenny news. She makes the cover of Forbes, one article says she made $100M from the SG sale last year, and in another article it says she made $55 million from the sale of SG, books, and what else her fans were willing to buy. I am holding onto my gut feeling that she made no where close to the $120M on the sale. It makes no financial sense. (Forbes continues to lose credibility with me—first with the promotion of the clown Donald Trump and now Bethenny.)
I also saw an interesting blog posting out of Dallas, TX where Bethenny made an appearance at a liquor store. Apparently, women were waiting 10 hours in line during a rain storm. The line was two blocks long.(That doesn’t sound like a long line, certainly not a long enough line to justify standing in the rain for 10 hours.) Bethenny arrived in a stretch limo repleat with what was characterized as a “very large entourage.” Bethenny sat on her throne and her entourage with bull horns informed the women to have their bottles purchased and their books open to the page they wanted Bethenny to sign. The women were hustled through the line, permitted one picture by the seated queen Bethenny and then her entourage escorted them away from the line. No small talk with her fans was permitted.
When I see pictures of Bethenny in NY, she is not surrounded by fans; it appears as if no one knows who she is or they don’t care. Then I hear about Dallas or see the crowds for her “talks” on her shows and I wonder where do these women come from? Some of them manage to drag their husbands or boyfriends with them. If my husband even said he was willing to go see Bethenny I would begin to worry.
