Adam—
Would you send me your Flickr photostream link?
I’d like to post the Israel trip photo gallery link in our upcoming AABGU May 2009 newsletter that I’ll be sending tomorrow!
I remember seeing your photo gallery, but can’t find it and/or you on Flickr.
Are you on there or just have photos on Facebook?

Thanks!
Hope you are great!

Health care:
There is a homeless person standing at the corner of a street. I came to him and offer him some food that I cannot and don’t want to eat (won’t give it to any relative or friend). Moreover, I don’t know what the quality of the food is. By looking at the food, he asked: what type of food is it? I told him that I didn’t know. He said he would like to know what ingredients and other stuffs in the food. I told him that I didn’t have a good idea about the composition. Then, he asked if I ate the food? I replied: no. He added: Are you going to? I said: no. Calmly, he told me that he knew that he needed some food but, thanks, he didn’t need mine. He quietly walked away. I dropped the food in the trash.
Is there any lesson for the National Health Care cooked by Obama and his team?

Excellent article, Mark! I learnt a lot, thank you. I know that Aposlte Orson Hyde returned from Israel in 1841 via Trieste, Austro-Hungary, which at the time Slovenia was a part of. Maybe even through Ljubljana. If you have access to this information, I could include it in the History of Slovenia Church we are writing for 16 October 2010 celebration of 20th Anniversary of Missionaries coming to teach in Slovenia, and 25th Anniversary of dedication of Yugoslavia for preaching of the Gospel on 31 October 1985, of which Slovenia was one of the 6 republics of Yugoslavia then. I hope you can attend!

I purchased you book last week and find it to be wonderful!  I played Mah Jongg for about 10 years but not in the last 10, though I am now getting a game together with inexperienced players and this book is what I’m using to teach them.  I’ve even learned a thing or two, like racking the tile, which I find most important as it definitvely ends the chance to call a tile. So, I thank you for the book.
I do have a question though I don’t know if you answer them here or not but here goes.
A player exposes a kong of 4-dots including 1 joker.  The 4th 4-dot has not yet been played.  Later, a player throws the 4-dot.  Can the player with the 4-dot exposure call the 4-dot for a)Mah Jongg (exchanging the 4-dot and using the joker with other tiles in her hand) or b)to exchange for the exposed joker then place the joker in her hand (not for Mah Jongg)?  We discussed the options and decided that the tile could not be called for but agreed that we should research to find the correct answer.
Once again, thank you for a great book.

Dear Dr.Fuchs, MD.
It is clear that you do not know practically anything about Chernobyl and radiation.  Let me help you a little bit.
1.  There are more than 1 million people affected (dead and sick) by Chernobyl. Radiation went as far as 5,500 miles away.  (Actually this is exactly the distance from Fukushima to Los Angeles).  There are still children and grandchildren of Chernobyl who are born with defects. And, yes, there were doctors like you who were telling that it is Ok, we are not affected, only people right nearby are going to get affected… Ask people from Belorussia, Poland, Ukraine, and as far as Tatarstan and Sweden.
2.  About radiation: there different particles: alpha, beta and gamma. While it is true that gamma particles most likely are going to be disseminated while over the ocean, alpha and beta can come with a plum to the West Coast. The same as exhausts from China and Japan coming up to Arizona.
3.  The defense from low intensity radiation is easy: stay indoors, wear mask outdoors, red wine, grape, and, yes, iodium. While Iodiom DOES have side effects, it should be taken with proper warning and timely.
4.  It looks like you do not care about thousands of people who will get cancer within several years just because they reading your “MD” supported article (or you are betting on that for more patients?)

I can’t stop watching either….I’m drawn to all the hair-crawling up my back, ‘oh no she didn’t’ comments and observations, and always walk away from watching the show saying, “gee, I can have camera following me and my fiance, and all the shenanigans going on with our upcoming non-religious, first time marriage for me at age 50 wedding planning events and bringing together our crazy families and lives’..... Be well !

Dr. Fuchs sir. You have recently reported on the problem of leprosy from armadillos but the section for comments refuses to accept comments. I am writing to inform you of the relevance of this article especially to those in the Jewish community. The recent death of a plague researcher illustrates this fact. He was working with a leprosy strain which he believed was not dangerous but it killed him because his iron levels were high / hemochromatosis. The problem being the Jewish have been recently found to have a high rate of polycythemia which is an iron loading disease and so in theory the Jewish would be prone to catch leprosy due to the fact leprosy uses iron JUST like plague uses iron.
“Casadaban’s lab bugs were weak because they have trouble taking up iron, which they need to make crucial enzymes. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to him, Casadaban had haemochromatosis, a genetic disorder in which people accumulate high levels of iron in their blood and organs. When the weakened bacteria somehow hit Casadaban’s blood, they suddenly received an influx in iron and regained their strength.”

There IS a possibility a person , due to age-related iron accumulation , IS predisposed to catching leprosy since iron IS being targeted as an approach to stopping leprosy ?

“Based on the chemistry of Mycobacterium leprae, the target systems for new anti-leprotics are identified. These systems include the cell wall, the catabolism of reactive oxygen species, the metabolisms of carbon sources, the amino acid metabolism and the uptake of iron.”

Comment by ironjustice on 4/29/11 at 7:24 am

I am a senior Jewish physician. At 45 yrs old, I’m very surprised that you have not previously voted in a presidential election particularly since you are so opinionated. Palin and Trump are very pro-Israel and you know that Obama is anti-Israel (stated since you had lived in Israel at one time). Actually a Trump/Palin team could beat Obama in 2012.

Comment by Truga on 4/29/11 at 8:41 pm

Is it mere coincidence you should write about a disease which ‘may’ be inclined to be caught by someone of the Jewish persuasion ? Did you KNOW this ? The Jewish have only recently been found to have a high incidence of polycythemia an iron loading disease which would predispose them to catching leprosy . This would be like the researcher who caught the plague in his lab because he was iron overloaded .

The elderly would be ESPECIALLY prone to catching leprosy BECAUSE of age-related iron accumulation / hemochromatosis / polycythemia.

Very dissapointed in this article. Very lazy reporting to primarily quote a 13 year old NYM article. If you are going to profile a prominent lawyer because he is a prominent Jew, why don’t you focus on his contributions to the Jewish community and various Tzaddok and worthy organizations (American and Israeli) that Mr. Brafman is actively involved in?

Hi Ilana:

I was a reader of your blog way back when you wrote of your feelings about Bethenny. I witnessed the horrible “hate” comments you received many of which attacked your religion.

They were awful.

I also advised you as to the blog site most of those comments emanated from. They actually bragged about the “hate” comments left on your blog.

I must however disagree about people disliking Jill because of her Jewish heritage.

People dislike Jill because she is full of hate and bitterness and lies and constructs scenarios that are just not true.

Hi - I hope this gets to Elaine! I went to your site but the ‘send a question’ link is broken. I teach Mah Jongg (American NMJL rules) in Albuquerque. I bought your book as a reference for my new students. It is an excellent resource. I recently purchased your boxed beginner’s set. Although it is well-priced and the tiles are easy to read, if it is designed for American Mah Jongg why are the racks not long enough for a wall of 19 tiles? All our players love pusher arms and the new longer racks with attached arms, but if nothing else, the included racks should accommodate a 19-tile wall. I would love to hear from you in this regard. Many thanks for your time and the useful, informative book!
Regards,
Cyndi

I really admire your blog.

I was wondering if you would be interested in doing your readers a favor by passing along information about a terrific opportunity.

Do any readers speak Balochi, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic, Mandarin, Swahili, Somali, Igbo, Hausa, or Turkish?  If so, the US government offers a great opportunity.

English for Heritage Language Speakers is government scholarship, like the Fulbright or the Boren, but specifically for Americans whose native language is not English.

The goal is to help advanced English learners become fluent enough to work for the U.S. Government.  The scholarship pays for a year of English courses at Georgetown University (complete with a stipend, laptop and health insurance) and helps you find a government job afterward.  Working for the government provides not only a secure job in a tough economy, but also a fulfilling, exciting way to contribute to society.  You can find more information at http://ehls.georgetown.edu/ or http://www.cal.org/ehls/, or just Google “English for Heritage Language Speakers.”

If this looks like something your readers might be interested in, I encourage you to pass the information along!  All the best!
