Hamas and three other Palestinian factions have agreed to stop firing Kassam rockets into Israel.
Reports on Monday’s announcement carried in Israeli newspapers cited Palestinian sources as saying that Islamic Jihad, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as well as Hamas, had agreed to stop firing rockets at Israel, following a meeting Saturday of the four factions.
The agreement comes as Hamas works to prevent another large Israeli incursion into Gaza on the level of Operation Cast Lead. Hamas stepped up patrols Monday in areas of Gaza from where rockets are usually fired at Israel, Haaretz reported.
Palestinian factions connected to Al-Qaida are not included in the agreement. Most of the 20 rockets fired at Israel in the last month were sent by these break-away groups, according to reports.
Palestinian terror groups have in recent weeks been targeting the border between Israel and Gaza, attempting to plant explosives to attack Israeli troops on patrol.
