Israel/Wikileaks: ‘Hezbollah expected to launch 100 missiles a day at Tel Aviv’

Israeli officials expect Hezbollah to fire about 500 missiles a day at Israel, including 100 that will reach Tel Aviv, in the next war.

A batch of U.S. diplomatic leaks shared with Israeli newspapers through WikiLeaks were published Friday. Summaries of conversations in 2009 between U.S. officials and Israeli intelligence officials show that Israel expects the next war with Hezbollah to last two months.

Israel has long complained that U.N. pledges in the wake of the 2006 Lebanon war to stem the flow of missiles into Lebanon have proved not only worthless, but that Hezbollah is stronger than it was before that war.

The terrorist group, which is now a leading party in Lebanon’s government, “is preparing for a long conflict with Israel in which it hopes to launch a massive number of rockets at Israel per day,” an Israeli officer is quoted as saying. “In the 2006 Second Lebanon War, Tel Aviv was left untouched − Hezbollah will try to change the equation during the next round and disrupt everyday life in Tel Aviv.”

In other WikiLeaks revelations, released through Ha’aretz and Yedioth Achronoth, Israeli officials in 2009 accused Turkey of helping Iran evade sanctions and describe Mohammed Tantawi, the Egyptian defense minister, as unreliable in the joint Egyptian-Israeli effort to stem arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip.

Tantawi now chairs the military council leading Egypt in the wake of the revolution earlier this year.

500 a day to the country as a whole and 100 per day in Tel Aviv.  How special is that.

Once again this proves the fecklessness of the “international community” and its paper treaties.  UNSCR 1701 prohibited the rearmament of Hezb’allah.  Only what it really provided for was a doubling or more of Hezb’allah’s strength.

wonderful.  And when Israel is forced to defend herself, it will once again be accused of “disproportionate response.”

Thanks, lefties…

Israel has launched 3 wars on Lebanon, 1978, 1982, and 2006, and numerous bombing attacks killing civilians and destroying property in the years before and in between, all of which could have been used by Lebanon as casus belli.

Hezbollah’s attack and capture of 2 IDFers in 2006 was a less serious breach of international law than were many of the “in between” assaults by the Israeli air force, whose flights over Lebanon are in violation of international law. Israel because it wanted revenge on Hezbollah for having driven its occupation forces out of their country after 22 years when it had no business there.

facts (or being most humane army in history) wont convince Helen Thomas, Hollywood Jeff, or those who want Israel destroyed. Israel should stop trying to please the world, especially those who will always be its critics., wage an active PR war, and plan for full victory and nothing short of full victory. If, Hezbollah sees a strong, united, and determined Israel they may be deterred. (This comes from the highest sources within Hezbollah.)

Some years ago Rob Eshman wrote an editorial condemning Israel for use of cluster bombs which at that time was the only feasible weapon that could suppress the Hezbollah missile launches.

Hezbollah has approx 50,000 adv mx +very strong system of fortified bunkers-embedded in schools, mosques, hospitals, etc assuming that outcry from liberal Jewish community & world will make them immune to IDF counterattack.

Israel must make it clear to Lebanese Gov &Hezbollah; that response will be “proportionate”. not 1 for 1,but 20 to 1.  that they regard impact suffered by Israel (lost production, population confined to shelters) as being equivalent to the productive infrastructure of Lebanon which they should promise to level in direct retaliation. This should give Shiite pop of Lebanon, currently ardent supporters of Hezbollah, incentive for wanting Hezbollah to moderate

part 2

Currently, the UN forces in Lebanon are serving as a shield and as an enabler. The Lebanese military, armed by the United States is fully cooperating with Hezbollah.

So much for the US demanding that Israel stop its invasion and forcing Israel to accept the worthless UN and international guarantees.

There is no substitute for victory. Read “how wars end” by Gideon Rose, editor of foreign affairs Journal.

are we going to risk a loss by advocating another war in Lebanon??
They are guerrillas. they never die all, so just leave the wound to heal itself.
Last time they arrested 2 soldiers in their land. So if we be good boys and stay in our home no one is going to be killed on either side.

Comment by Noam on 4/09/11 at 4:15 am

Noam:You use “arrested” and “in their land”. documented history using UN markings , they crossed the border, kidnapped the soldiers, and murdered them. History of terror raids from Lebanon is undisputed. Your post illustrates those lie about Israel will continue to lie about Israel. Thus, “world opinion” shouldn’t deter Israel from a robust &effective; defense. Before, the first incursion into Lebanon cross-border raids were numerous and bloody… That was In the reason for the incursion.  terrorists brag about their exploits & people like Noam justify the murders -you always find someone (unfortunately sometimes within the Jewish community) who do.

Comment by LT COL HOWARD on 4/09/11 at 10:01 am

“Lt Col Howard” as a military person should know that soldiers on active duty are not kidnapped, they are captured. Children and civilians are kidnapped and these Israeli soldiers on active duty on the Lebanese border were not children.

The “incursions” by Israel into Lebanon, from the ground and from the air, going back to 1964, have been far more bloody.

Statements that Hezbollah has embedded bunkers in schools, mosques, and hospitals is just more of the type of Israeli propaganda that no one but their supporters believe. If there is another war it will be started by Israel as have all the others.

Comment by HollywoodJeff on 4/09/11 at 11:04 am

LT COL HOWARD:
I think HollywoodJeff has perfectly answered to your Official Israeli Propaganda style and I do not need to repeat him.
