Is Adam Lambert’s sexuality getting in the way?

Posted by Danielle Berrin

Photo

First it was bras and panties, familiar tokens of affection in the world of music fandom. But this afternoon, things kicked up a notch when it was reported that Adam Lambert fans were hurling sex toys on stage during the singer’s performance.

Lambert has been traveling the country performing for the American Idol Summer Tour and has since experienced all kinds of peculiar fan behavior. But not like this.

“It’s going further, and somebody threw onstage a red-leather tasseled whip,” he told E! Online. “Yeah, and then the next night, I got one that was made out of, like, purple fur. It’s getting really S&M.”

Sounds like Lambert fans are taking his candid, carefree approach to sexuality very seriously.

Gene Simmons, star of the band Kiss, saw this coming. No stranger to the world of sex and rock-and roll, Simmons told AOL that Lambert made a mistake coming out to Rolling Stone magazine last June.

“He’s enormously talented, best talent ‘American Idol’ has had, but I think he killed his career because now the conversation is not about his talent but about his sexual preference. He’s done,” Simmons, who performed with Lambert during the American Idol finale, said earlier this summer.

“Life is unfair, and the masses don’t all live in L.A. They live in Wisconsin and Nebraska, and you’re on crack if you think the same rules apply there. My advice is still the same, shut the f*** up, just sing and let people say whatever they want.”

Simmons said that the world is homophobic and not prepared to accept a singer, like Lambert, on talent alone.

“But I do wish him the best because he’s got all the talent in the world…I would be the first one to vote for equal rights for gay women and men, and get the church and the state to stop telling everybody how to lead their lives,” he said. “But do I think he’s killed his career? Oh, in an instant. I hope I’m completely wrong. I hope he becomes the next Beatles and proves me wrong.”

Oh for goodness sake it was a couple of bras and a small red whip!  Not exactly sex toys.  Lambert’s comment was meant tongue in cheek and of course you took it seriously.  Oh and thanks so much for rehashing the Gene Simmons nonsense.  I guess even when there is no news to print, the mere mention of Adam’s name makes it so.

I really expect more from this publication…what is the point of your article? Why to bring up the nonsense from Gene S? None of this makes any sense… The concerts are fun…stop implying something that is not there… please find something with more substance to write about – Adam Lambert deserves better than this….

Why on earth would anyone bother reprinting Gene Simmons comments about the talented Mr. Lambert? Gene Simmons made a career out of sticking out his tongue and dressing up like a comic book character. Not much of a musician either. I’m betting Madonna had a few whips thrown onstage in the course of her career, and by the way - she talked about her sexuality all the time. I believe she even published a book called “SEX”. So here we are with a fantastic new talent - who just happens to be Jewish and you choose to jump on the negative train, siding with Gene Simmons.
What’s your point?

Comment by Levi on 8/04/09 at 7:42 pm

Ms. Berrin, are you a reporter?  Could have fooled me.  I guess anyone will do anything to get a hit.  This is really old news about Simmons, and it’s already been proved wrong.  It’s almost a joke now that people are throwing stuff on the stage.  And haven’t you seen this before with other performers.  If not, you do need to get out more often.

Comment by Geeeeeze on 8/04/09 at 7:58 pm

Oh come on, give me a break. It’s quite the opposite. Despite admitting that he’s gay, the crowd response to Adam has been incredibly positive in EVERY STATE. Even in Utah to name a conservative state welcomed him with open arms. EVERY REVIEW says that judging by the crowd’s reaction, Adam Lambert is by far the favourite in every stop so far. Does this sound like a homophobic world? Not only that, but the fact that straight woman are declaring their love for an openly gay man is quite an accomplishement. I think more articles should focus on the fact that Adam Lambert is the only performer we can think of in music history who has been whole heartedly embraced despite being gay, a preference he has NEVER hidden unlike past musicians. Furthernore, the only thing that somewhat dims his light are the non sense articles like yours that refuses to give him any credit when credit is due. MJ wanted to meet Adam, Muse, U2, Meatloaf, Bruce Springsteen and Marilyn Manson (just to name a few) all praised Adam Lambert. So why don’t you acknowledge all the good he has done thus far. Sure, there are still many homophobes like Simmons and yourself out there, and yes, Adam Lambert is a polarizing figure. But at least he has the guts to try to open our hearts and minds to something we rejected in the past. Sure, Adam’s sexuality will continue to be scrutized by the media because it’s controversial, but I believe that Mr. Lambert is talented enough to overcome these controversies. As Madonna has said, if you’re going to be a trail blazer in any way, then you’ll have to be strong enough to raise above the negative critics. Obviously, Danielle, you have not done your homework because Adam Lambert has been shown acceptance and love, something you should work on.

Comment by Nadine on 8/04/09 at 8:02 pm

How can you say that Gene Simmons “saw this coming”?  Shouldn’t you be saying, “Gene was wrong”?  Gene said that Adam’s career was over before it started, whereas now women are throwing themselves (and various objects) at Adam, regardless of his sexuality.  Also, he is getting rave reviews in every tour city.  He is considered by many to be the highlight of the night because of his gorgeous vocals and ability to captivate an audience.  The whips and underwear are just fun, icing on the cake.  Adam’s fans are proving Gene wrong.

Comment by Stephanie on 8/04/09 at 8:04 pm

Adam is awesome. Enough said.

Comment by Polly on 8/04/09 at 8:05 pm

Are you kidding me? These are women who adore Adam.  What does this have to do with homophobia?

Comment by lw on 8/04/09 at 8:13 pm

Wow, um, you’re an unprofessional idiot Danielle Berrin.  Only a completely clueless moron would reprint something Gene Simmons said as fact.  Good job.

Comment by AbeM on 8/04/09 at 8:14 pm

Ms Berrin, are you serious…Adam is very mellow compared to the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna, and Gene Simmons big mouth…Your opinion is just that…Adam is so very talented and if people go crazy over him…well, I am just jealous and happy for him…nothing wrong with people getting excited…I am sure he is not the first to have undergarments thrown at him…please come with us to the 21st century you may enjoy it….don’t be a prude…

Comment by David on 8/04/09 at 8:15 pm

What was the purpose of the article…to give publicity to Gene Simons??  Adam Lambert openly embracing his sexuality is refreshing..he is who he is and proud of it. Why shouldn’t he be?

And in case you haven’t noticed, he is both a brilliant vocalist and performer.men and women..both gay and straight have fallen in love with this amazing young artist.

Your aricle was wasted reading.

Comment by poprock on 8/04/09 at 8:30 pm

What a bizarre article, demonstrating how a so-called reporter can and will twist commentary from a biased (ie homophobic source like Gene Simmons) to push their own agenda (which I have to wonder is as homophobic as Simmons). Even a cursory but open-minded examination of the real situation on the tour shows that Gene Simmons could not have been more wrong. The fans who throw items on stage for Adam Lambert LOVE him and enjoy watching him use props—for fun. From all accounts, most of the AI tour concert goers are there to see Adam and having seen him on AI, they knew what they were getting and on tour they only clamor for more, more, more. They have fully embraced him as a total person, including his sexuality. If you cannot do the same, at least do the readers the favor of stating your bias upfront, rather than trying to manipulate reality to suit your POV.

Comment by Camille on 8/04/09 at 8:35 pm

Well what is the point here? Adam is who he is and how people react to that is out of his control.  Is Gene Simmons right on the effect on his career, well that has yet to be seen.  But as for his sexuality well it is what it is, what else can he do, live a secret life of lies like so many before him, that is a cruel prison to live in in exchange for success and I applaud Adam for turning his back on that and either succeeding or failing as himself.

And I think the very fact he has so many screaming female fans, who apparently are fantasing or whatever enough to throw bras at him may just be the first inkling to the answer to that question, ie: straight or gay, he is talented and sexy.

Comment by Lisa W on 8/04/09 at 8:35 pm

Whaaaaaat?  The articles thrown on the stage are because he’s sexy—no matter what his sexuality may be.  They’ve been really harmless and meant to be in good fun, and they’re not being thrown because he’s gay, but because he’s nearly universally awesomely attractive.  Why must a big deal be made out of EVERYTHING?  Reporters would help Adam out by writing about his obvious talent, the obvious fan craze he’s inspiring during the tour, etc.  If a journalist is truly concerned about Adam’s talents being overlooked, then why do they keep writing silly articles?  The worst part is that most of the articles aren’t even original; One blog prints something, then all the others rework it without doing any additional investigation.  It’s just lazy and unprofessional, in my opinion.

Comment by Teri on 8/04/09 at 8:45 pm

Gene Simmons tried to get on the Adam train because NO ONE thinks Simmons is relevant anymore! Taking a crack at Adam Lambert got Simmons in the news-but that is as far as it goes. No Adam Lambert fan that I have ever spoken to cares what Gene Simmons thinks.

Why link what Simmons has to say, to the fun that the Lambert fans are having on the tour? Adam just has so much potential and people have seen that he is there to sing and have a good time. Adam has so much ahead of him in show biz. He is funny, intelligent, charming, refreshing and sings better than anyone out there right now.

According to ALL reports the AI tour is a success due to mostly him. He wouldn’t admit that but it’s true. Just because there are a few fun-loving fans that pick up on Adam’s fun-side doesn’t mean it is serious. Audiences just want to interact with him and get his attention. I think he is amazing how he can quickly pick-up on the sense of fun, run with it for the enjoyment of the audience while maintaining his professional side. He never misses a beat.

These kinds of reports are just not going to deter people away from wanting to see Adam Lambert in concert, or buy his CD’s.

Comment by SJ on 8/04/09 at 8:45 pm

Adam’s talent is still at the forefront and please stop mentioning gene s, he’s so wrong!

Comment by iana leahman on 8/04/09 at 8:48 pm

Hope you are not really this naive, Adam has totally proven Gene Simmons wrong!!!  He is totally ACCECPTED at all the locations they have been to and is being treated as a Rock Star.  I went to one of the live concerts and he was the most popular entertainer there.  Screaming, throwing bras, panties, whips (not real ones so YOU need not worry) etc. is all a sign of support!  Guess you were never at any rock concerts when growing up to be the well informed reporter that you are.  To quote Adam, “Sexy is Sexy” and that young man is sexy and the best part is extremely talented.  Maybe you should consider attending a concert and see for yourself.  My family will be buying all his music and extending him our full support for hopefully many years to come.  (Please don’t post any more Gene Simmons quotes, he does not deserve the attention.)

Comment by Cindi on 8/04/09 at 8:55 pm

Yes, like somebody said before, saying ‘sex toys’ to describe whips is a little misleading.  When I read ‘sex toys’ I gasped, but when I realized you meant ‘whips’ it was like you purposefully wanted to shock people.  I would never throw anything offensive on stage myself, so I’m not endorsing it, but having said that…I DO NOT think the reason why people are throwing things that may have a sexual connotation is because he’s gay.  In my opinion, the reason is because he’s a really, really sexy man. His performances are just sexy…sexy begets sexy.  AND because he’s open minded and will get the joke.  It’s as simple as that.  The fans are not thinking about his sexuality when they are enjoying his amazing voice and natural performance ability, it’s actually people in the media that are making it a focal point.  Middle America is also attending the AI concerts and guess what, they too are screaming for Adam more than for any other performer on the tour.  So if you want to blog about Adam, why not blog about that…the fact that his sexuality doesn’t seem to matter at all to people that are screaming for him while he performs? Just a thought.

Comment by Carol on 8/04/09 at 8:56 pm

I remember reading a Rolling Stone article in which the reporter tells how Simmons pulls out a photo album with hundreds of photos he took of his conquests private parts.

Are we really supposed to care what this jackass thinks about Adam Lambert?

Comment by Steve in Cali on 8/04/09 at 8:56 pm

woah, woah, woah! who the hell do you think you are going around saying that adam’s sexuality has ruined his career? he has millions of fans all around the world, he gets the loudest cheers, he’s a freakin STAR! he is soo vocally gifted and he is a very sexy man. what does his sexuality have anything to do with the bras and panties and whips being thrown on stage? it was WOMEN who threw that on stage, dummy! and there is NOTHING wrong with throwing a few things to show love for adam. haven’t you ever been to a rock concert before? this is typical! he is becoming a star. face it adam lambert is going to be ICONIC. so you and gene simmons can go shove sticks up your asses.

Comment by Alison on 8/04/09 at 9:02 pm

Why is she assigning sex toys to gay orientation. We’re just so excited by Adam. He transcends your labels. It is like he is the perfect evolved male-fierce but sensitive. I don’t understand why your saying his career is over that is not reality. We love Adam -everything about him I went to Tampa show, I was in front row while he played with that whip thing -the audience went wild!!Me too!! I can’t wait for his solo tour we have a group that plan going to any shows in the area You should see him perform maybe it will shake the old fashioned ideas out of your head Gene Simmions is wrong except Adam will be as big or bigger than the Beatles. BTW I’m straight 59 yr old woman My group that plans on going to concerts range from 20 to 66 age. We think Adam Rocks do not pressure him to change!!!

Comment by cony on 8/04/09 at 9:04 pm

Whether or not Adam told us we was gay or not, we all find him a very sexy man.  That has nothing to do with his sexual preference.  Why bring Gene Simmons into the equation?  Shows your bias.  You make it sound like his fans are throwing dildos on stage which is not the case.  Hey, didn’t I see you picketing Adam at one of the concerts????

Comment by Sue on 8/04/09 at 9:14 pm

You’ve got to be joking Danielle! Yo have actually reached bottom dredging and scum sucking status to have regurgitated anything Gene Simmons has quoted! What kind of reporting are you into? We know Gene Simmons has sold his family to the Devil in order to promote his “Look at me! I’ve had thousands of women in my lifetime but that’s ok because I’m heterosexual and I’ve got a woman who is so naive and children that I pimp so I can let my “I like me, who do you like” existence prevail. ICK!! I’ll take a Adam Lambert anyday before I would even consider Gene Simmons!

Comment by loveAdam on 8/04/09 at 9:16 pm

Last time I checked, Gene Simmons was Israeli and a has been musician relegated to cable TV! Who cares what he thinks. This tying of old rehashed quotes from Gene along with the title to the article makes this writer sound like a real rube of a reporter!

Comment by MM on 8/04/09 at 9:17 pm

There are very few serious or creative reporters anymore. As has been stated, one person/publication states a “fact” and everyone jumps on the same bandwagon. Adam Lambert is a phenomonon that the music industry hasn’t seen in a very, very long time. When someone’s music affects me, I don’t question myself and ask myself if they are black or white, straight or gay, Protestant or Catholic, and so on and so on. Talent is talent and is not defined by the previous labels. Who cares if Adam is gay? Who cares if Adam is Jewish? Adam is an extremely talented young man and is going to go to the top of this industry. AND, besides his talent, he IS a very sexy person. This aspect comes from inside and has nothing to do with his preference. In short, Adam has talent and the IT factor, something we haven’t seen for a long time in one package. Perhaps if you had some talent you could write something correct, inspiring, and refreshing. If you can’t do that, perhaps you should change careers. Have you heard about the child who had some disability and didn’t smile until he saw Adam on TV every Tuesday night? Have you heard about the stories of the children with other disabilities who were otherwise unresponsive, light up when Adam was on TV? Go to Adam’s Idol blog site and you will be amazed at the lives he has touched. This world is getting so lazy that we can’t have one original thought or do a decent job on anything. Do your research and try again. This article WAS a waste of time, as someone already stated.

Have you been under a bridge?

Comment by areyoukiddingme on 8/04/09 at 9:28 pm

lets remember Jim Morrison exposed himself on stage decades ago and was arrested. He is still considered a rock legend.
Other rock stars were busted for drugs and banned from the US. Their careers were not ruined.
Most people are fairly forgiving and forgetful or are just not that judgemental anyway.
Adam is going to be just fine…I certainly do not see his popularity diminishing at this point. Even with everything that is out there already.

Comment by sue on 8/04/09 at 9:44 pm

This is so freaking funny! Ah duh, Adam Lambert is the universal rock god and sex symbol. That is why his fans are are tossing bras and pretend whips, and furry hancuffs, and ect. ect.. It’s because we get it. This is about having fun. Adam works very hard to put on an exciting show. Maybe whoever wrote this can find a job writing cookbooks or something because she is totally clueless when it comes to writing reviews. I know eighty year old grandmas who are more up to date.

Comment by Wicked Glitter on 8/04/09 at 9:45 pm

Ms. Berrin, You are rehashing a story that is over two months old.  Did you not have a submission for today.  Gene Simmons is an idiot and you are a bigger one for bringing this story back from the dead. If you want a good story how about writing about the immensely talented young man on the precipice to superstardom.  Now thats a story worth writing.  But I guess you did get me to respond to this inane piece of trash so may be I’m the idiot.  Go Adam

Comment by Paula C on 8/04/09 at 9:48 pm

Adam is the most exciting new performer in decades- with fans all age groups-around the globe- and so there are some jealous people who are resentful, but that is their problem whose bad energy will affect themselves not us. Adam is an outstanding singer, having fun on stage and entertaining us. Adam Lambert makes us feel good. I think it is because he is ‘good vibrations ’ and if you are in a different energy frequency, you lose, cause his is high and wonderful and filled with light and laughter, love and fun! Poor Gene, poor reporter.

Comment by ianaleah on 8/04/09 at 10:00 pm

First of all, Simmons is stuck in the 70’s, second of all, the whips and the bras have nothing to do with him being gay, it has everything to do with him being insanely, out of this world sexy.  Sexy is sexy, so it doesn’t matter to the women if he’s gay.

Comment by Cate on 8/04/09 at 10:03 pm

Looks like Gene Simmons proved what an idiot he is. He made those comments about 2 month ago (a little slow on the reporting?) and Adam has by far been the crowd favorite at the AI concerts. Contrary to Simmons comments they loved him in Arkansas. He was even the crowd favorite in Salt Lake City Utah of all places. This Jewish Journal is about 2 months behind in news.

Comment by lindajean139 on 8/04/09 at 10:31 pm

pretty tame for sex toys- could be a lot worse, like vibrators and dildo’s- now that would make me blush.

Comment by kelly on 8/04/09 at 10:43 pm

This article does not make sense. People are tossing up cute little sex toys because they love Adam and think he is totally sexy. No one give a flip whether he is gay - is gorgeous and hot!! This article is trying to make it a negative - frankly his sexiness and the fact that he is gay are helping him big time.  You on the other seem to have an issue Daniele B.

Comment by Janis on 8/04/09 at 10:45 pm

You also do not mention that Adam is spectacularly talented and that is recognized by his fans, by other artisit and some of the top producers in the industry.  Adam has a voice from heaven - and you want to focus on who he sleeps with. wow!!

Comment by Janis on 8/04/09 at 10:58 pm

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, WE DON’T GIVE A RATS A@@ IF ADAM IS GAY, WE LOVE HIM, WE LOVE HIM , HE HAS BEEN LOVED IN EVERY CITY THEY HAVE TOURED SO FAR, HE GETS MILLIONS OF EMAILS FROM FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD. DANNY BABE YOU REALLY NEED TO GET OUT MORE AND OPEN UP AT REPORTER IF YOU WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, UNCLENCH!! AGAIN, WE LOVE ADAM LAMBERT

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of JewishJournal.com. If all your articles are as bad as Ms. Berrin’s, I understand why you will remain unknown, and why I’ll never be back. Suggest you require increased quality of your reporters’ research… or at least hers.

Comment by Paula on 8/04/09 at 11:08 pm

So women throwing their panties and sex toys at this guy is a sign that he’s unaccepted? And I thought that meant they liked him. Who knew chicks tossing lingerie was a sign of homophobia? Wow, thanks for clearing this up. I was completely misunderstanding the situation.

Comment by Lauren on 8/04/09 at 11:18 pm

Berrin, did Gene Simmons pay you to write this? We all know he would sell his turd if he thought someone would buy it. Here is how I see it. Danielle Berrin & Gene Simmons = Homophobes

Comment by Jason Hebert on 8/04/09 at 11:31 pm

Wow, is Adam Lambert breaking all the rules and changing history? No doubt! Not only he possesses otherworldly talent but has the sex appeal that most women are melting over for. He’s proving it by upping the under garments to sex toys. Elvis, Beatles and Tom Jones would be jealous! Sexy is sexy with no boundaries; gender nor orientation, says his mostly female fans around the world. Gene’s comment about Adam’s move sets back 20 years(a la Freddie Mercury). For Adam, he’s challenged us to be progressive and he should be proud that tons and tons of his true fans have not only embraced his talent but his honesty and confidence. The whole package of his talent, charm, intelligence and his humility makes him sexy to all types women in all ages around the world. And some men as well.

Comment by Cindy on 8/05/09 at 12:00 am

Please enlighten me… what exactly do you mean by his “candid, carefree approach to sexuality”? Are you referring to the fact that he does not hide his sexual orientation? So, if I am open about my heterosexuality, does that mean that I also have a candid, carefree approach to to sexuality?

Or, are you referring to his PG13 stage performance? You certainly are not referring to his interviews… and what the hell does Gene Simmons and his homophobic comments have to do with Adam’s fans throwing “props” on stage????? If anything, it contradicts Gene Simmons prediction, as well as what I think is the point of your article.

... and what do fans throwing these props on stage have to do with the fact that Adam Lambert is open about his sexual orientation? Do you think they are throwing these things because he is an openly gay man?

No, they are throwing these things because he is a really hot guy!!!! The only people who care about this man’s sexual orientation are the writers writing about it… them and the right wing fundamentalists protesting it.

Furthermore, if you had done your research, you would know that those “sex toys” were comparable to something you’d give your girlfriend as a joke at her bachelorette party… hardly serious S&M paraphernalia.

Can’t we simply read a concert review, or hear about his upcoming CD without having to sift through this vile sensationalism?

Of course, if these writers had any talent, they would not have to resort to such lows.

Comment by jolie on 8/05/09 at 12:30 am

This article is ridiculous. Gay or not, we find him to be highest star quality in terms of music and sexually he is adorable. We are just having a little fun. He is liberating and beautiful. Despite Mr. Simmons dim prediction—we have accepted Adam Lambert. We were ready for him—hungry for him as the old rockers are fading away.

Comment by Terry Helm on 8/05/09 at 12:38 am

oh for cryin’ out loud! do people write nonsense because they’ve run out of things to write? i guess so. who cares what gene simmons says. he’s had his day and i’m sure he wishes he was adam. adam is so full of life and talent. the comment that gene simmons made is ridiculous. i smell some envy in it. and ms. berrin…stop wastin’ the letters of the alphabet.

Comment by babs on 8/05/09 at 12:57 am

Hey, you know we are actually encouraging this media sensationalism with our comments. The success of an author depends upon the amount of hits and comments their article generates, irregardless of quality. As hard as it is to keep our fingers still, let’s stop feeding these vultures… how about this is the last comment.

Comment by jolie on 8/05/09 at 12:57 am

Why are you and most everybody else constantly reminding everyone that Adam is gay.  We all know and don’t give a crap.  You don’t go around mentioning straight people as being straight.  When is this going to stop?  It is nonsense.  The whole country doesn’t care who is gay and who is not.  I would almost bet that 75% of the country now realizes that if gay people married, it would not affect them in any way.  Doesn’t that tell you something?  I don’t want to know who is straight and who is gay.  I want to bring people into my life and love them because they bring me humor, or joy, or love, or happiness.  Isn’t that what we all want in our lives.  People who make us feel good about ourselves.  Who cares about sexuality.  I care more about character and goodness—things that really matter.

Comment by irish1139 on 8/05/09 at 1:02 am

oh! you mean adam? adam lambert who performed to rave reviews in The Ten Commandments musical? that one? the one who performed in the jewish fundraising chabad? oh….that adam! wow. guess you’re really thanking him, huh? gimme a break.

Comment by babs on 8/05/09 at 1:11 am

wow! This article was so clueless. I agree with the majority of comments. Adam Lambert exudes SEX and women (& lots of men) are responding to him in droves. Being gay doesn’t have anything to do with it. His David Bowie Medley is beyond sexy. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86KnF1PN8Ok and then write an honest article about the potential of Adam’s career.  He’s gonna be a star.

Comment by Dorena on 8/05/09 at 1:39 am

Very strange take on an old practice. Women threw their panties at Elvis and Tom Jones. It has nothing to do with being gay or straight. It is a custom that means we think someone is hot or we enjoy someone’s sexuality. Gene Simmons? Well, a tomato might be a more appropriate throw.

Comment by Thelma on 8/05/09 at 1:41 am

Ms. Derrin…how old is that statement that gene simmons made? as a matter of fact it was made before the tour. did it ever occur to you that adam and his fans are proving gene simmons wrong? adam coming out in rolling stone was no big deal. most peole either knew or expected it. adam is sexy, but he is also humble and genuine. it’s clear he appreciates and embraces his fans. really, now…get a grip.

Comment by babs on 8/05/09 at 2:00 am

And did ya know that the Rolling Stone magazine with Adam Lambert on the cover is sold out completely.. no back issues availalbe? I did not go back through other past issues pages to check… but the ones listed on that page ... well, Adam’s was the ONLY one that sold out… not even MJ’s sold out. That has to speak for something. I mean, for real? Just sayin…

People Love Adam Lambert. It’s a fact. I don’t believe everyone is going to love Adam as much as we do because his style of music isn’t for everyone. Although, from what I’ve seen, the majority of the people seem to really love and appreciate the “mindblowing” talent that he is, and I, for one, would really appreciate it if all these so called “reporters” (I think this is just a blogger? I mean it doesn’t seem professional to me.) would get their facts straight before printing stuff like this. It used to be a job with integrity… and they had to have proof before printing or they would be held liable for slander. Not so in today’s world of internet blogging and half-a@@ed reporting, unfortunately.

Adam’s sexuality isn’t getting in the way of anything. That is really funny, when you think about it. I think maybe they may have been referring to the fact that he is just too sexy for his shirt… maybe?  Because that is, for real, a FACT.

Who knows.

Comment by Didyaknow on 8/05/09 at 3:06 am

Are you nuts? Seriously, this article took a complete left turn. Because a whip is thrown on stage during a sexy routine, suddenly Gene S. is right and Adam’s sexuality is getting in the way???? It’s the complete opposite lady. Times move on and change. Bra’s and panties have been done forever. So, ooooh, a couple people decide the up the anty a bit. Hmmm. It’s been decades since the sexual revolution. Guess it still hasn’t reached you. Adam is both sexually extroverted and a highly attractive entertainer. Gay or straight isn’t the issue. He’s getting the reaction he is because of who he is not who he sleeps with. He does a set filled with sexual songs (Whole Lotta Love, Slow Ride, and Fame which Adam himself turns into sexy fun). All of the items tossed on stage are ones he himself wore while on the idol stage which implies at the very least he wouldn’t get freaked out. I do have to wonder at your agenda when you draw such an off the wall conclusion.

Comment by Jeanne on 8/05/09 at 4:06 am

Does this reporter have anyone reading what she writes before she hits send????  the article is ridiculous!  the fact that women all over the US are so crazy for Adam that they throw these things at him PROVES that the old sleazy hasbeen Gene Simmons was completely WRONG!
Duh…!

Comment by lizziegs on 8/05/09 at 6:02 am

Ms Berrin,
Please explain - what is the whole point of your article? It sets up a (half) premise and ends with a quote from a third-party with no discernible input from you. What do you infer from quoting Gene Simmons?

Are you saying that Adam is done for because sex toys are thrown on stage during Adam’s set in the tour? If yes, how and why do you come to this conclusion? How does getting panties, bras and some kinky toys thrown at you during a performance equate to end of pop singing career? Honestly, lets be frank - while Adam is talented and its his music that everyone loves - looking good, having sex appeal, being adored and loved by fans are what is going to GIVE HIM a stellar career in the international pop music scene.

Furthermore, how does getting kinky items thrown at you by women have anything to do with Adam Lambert being gay? What is the link? Instead, shouldn’t it be a positive that Adam is able to excite women in spite of being gay? Don’t heterosexual male singers get similar reactions too? I believe boy bands and singers like Enrique Iglesias get women fans hot and bothered, resulting in crazy antics.

Unfortunately, I can only conclude that you are homophobic and actually agrees with what Gene Simmons had said. BUT as you have NO evidence or fact to back up what Gene Simmons had envisioned as Adam’s future… you have tried to bend the facts to fit your wishful thinking - that Adam would not have a successful career in the pop music scene (as he is gay therefor not deserving of this success?)

I am really appalled that you are so bias in your writing and worse off, presented such a ineffectual and defective argument to support your stance. As a journalist, you have failed very disastrously; as a person, you need to broaden your mind and heart and see the myriad nature of people! - Ooi from Singapore

LOL. This was the wierdest article ever. Btw, I would never throw something but I don’t really care when others do unless it’s heavy, dangerous etc. Anyway, LAME ‘article’ lmao.

IS THIS A SPOOF ARTICLE OR SOMETHING?

Comment by LOLWUT on 8/05/09 at 10:04 am

LOLWUT,
Yeah, the total lack of logic makes me wish I could take back my previous comment. Now that I’ve had some sleep I can see that it’s either a spoof or a troll and I hate to dignify either with a serious answer.

Comment by Jeanne on 8/05/09 at 10:12 am

Gene Simmons has it wrong, everyone loves Adam for being true to himself, straight women especially appreciate his candor and honesty.  This guy is so charismatic, we’ve been waiting for someone like Adam for years.  I was finished with idol till I saw and heard Adam’s amazing voice, he’s moved me to tear’s.  Above all else he’s the winner regardless of the outcome, he’s a God given talent, I follow all the news on him, I’m almost 60 years old and have never been so hooked on a performer as much as I am with Adam. Apart from his talent he is gracious, charismatic, intelligent and honest all the things I love in a man. It’s so refreshing, the world has been waiting for a super star and he’s finally arrived.

Your article = Epic Fail. That’s all I’m going to say.
And that I hate myself for loving KISS at one time in my life.

Adam’s career is going great! Your’s ‘Danielle’ should be sent to the rags like the Examiner where you belong.

Comment by Ianaleah on 8/05/09 at 2:14 pm

@Nadine: I just want to make something clear. Adam Lambert is not the “only performer in music history who has been whole heartedly embraced despite being gay”. Take Jrock (Japanese rock) as an example—many Jrockers like to do gay fanservice on stage, and while not all of them are gay, women absolutely love their guy on guy action. It’s only in cultures like ours where people have yet to realize the appeal gay men have on women. So it’s not really that straight women are starting to accept a gay performer like Adam; we just haven’t had that many men in the past who were not afraid to be sexy in a “gay way” since they were all so concerned about looking “manly” and “straight”.

Comment by Eve on 8/05/09 at 3:23 pm

Two whips and a pair of handcuffs have been thrown on stage, along with numerous bras and panties.  Hardly the makings of a madame’s boudoir, is it?  We’re not talking blow-up dolls, vibrators and gimp masks.  Get a grip, please!

Comment by Candela on 8/05/09 at 3:39 pm

I’m happy to address these comments and answer some of your questions since there has been a rather heated response to my post.

First, I am a fan, a big fan of Adam Lambert. I consistently write about him precisely because I find him so talented, interesting and provocative.

As Ooi from Singapore pointed out, I did not include my opinion or analysis in the post. In this case, I left that to you.

My intention was to make a connection between a comment and an event in order to raise a question and stimulate debate, which I think it did.

But if my want my opinion, here it is: I do not agree that Adam Lambert’s career is in any way “done,” as Simmons suggested. On the contrary, I expect to see him flourish once he is through with his American Idol commitments. However, I do believe that Lambert’s overt sexuality—his sex appeal, his androgynous attractiveness, his comfort and candor at being perceived as a sex object (which includes his decision to promulgate his sexual preference)—does indeed have an impact on his public image. And in Hollywood, image is everything. There is no way to divorce your image from your ability to be successful in entertainment. In many respects, your success largely depends on your image – so I understand what Simmons was saying.

I just might disagree. Perhaps because Lambert is so overtly sexualized, he will be more desirable to his audience, not less.

While I agree that certain acts of infatuation from music fans are commonplace, it is different with Lambert because he has put his sexuality front and center. Sex is now part of Lambert’s act. And while I’m sure Gene Simmons has had a few panties thrown his way over the years, the degree to which fans are responding to Lambert sexually I find unique.

The point of my post, though, was not to state my opinion, but ask yours. If you look, you’ll see that I titled it in the form of a question. And I thank you for your passionate and insightful responses.

Keep reading, Xx danielle

I am totally mystified by your article and just what the hell it is supposed to mean!  Gene Simmons “saw this coming”? Saw what coming? That Adam would prove Gene to be wrong, wrong, wrong and would prove to be adored by a massive amount of fans just the way he is?

Are you implying that the people are throwing sexy things on stage as an insult, or because he’s gay?

What the hell are you talking about here?  Are you speaking in tongues? You’re making about as much sense.

I don’t get it.

Comment by imyourmom on 8/05/09 at 4:20 pm

Just read your comment posted above mine - I guess what I’m reading is not what you intended to say.

In your article I’m seeing you draw a clear line from Gene’s retarded “your career is destroyed because you came out” to “sex toys on stage”.

The two different events really have nothing to do with each other, and I still don’t understand how you’re making this leap between them.

But whatever.

Comment by imyourmom on 8/05/09 at 4:25 pm

Last night I was at the DC concert in the Verizon Center. Adam’s reception there proved how invalid your comments are about him.  Everytime his picture flashed on the screen the screaming erupted and when it was his set, the screams and cheering for Adam were fierce and super loud and started as soon as Gokey’s last note was dying away.  Clearly it was evident that the majority of the concert attendees were there to see and hear Adam perform.  Simmons has got it all wrong and should keep his mouth shut.  We, his devoted fans, love Adam just the way he is, his super talented, senuous and sexy fun loving self.  His powerful vocals soared last night and I can’t wait to hear him again on Sunday in Newark.  That’s what is important.  I saw only one red bra tossed on stage and Adam picked it up, twirled it and tossed it away. Big deal. Just fun, nothing more than that.  Yes, Adam is going to be a superstar so I’m in for the ride with him, supporting him, attending concerts and buying his albums. I’m straight, 64 and loving the excitement Adam generates.

Comment by fMarian on 8/05/09 at 4:32 pm

He should have kept it to him self.

Comment by Bill on 8/05/09 at 11:18 pm

So many of us came to Adam’s defense because he makes sex adorable and somewhat feminine, even natural and innocent. I continue to be confused with your reasoning even after your kind explanation. This is because the “image” predicted by Simmons was so far off base. Yes, sex is a part of all our images—but the point Simmons made had nothing to do with Adam’s performance—it only had to do with his sexual orientation and we are all ready to move past that now.

Comment by Terry on 8/06/09 at 2:04 am

Probably its their way of promoting sex toys. like how i’m doing mine right now. haha.

Comment by adultshotstuff on 8/06/09 at 6:12 am

Adam’s fans are very devoted and do it with a tongue-in-cheek hilarity; we all know about this and some planned it, it’s akin to Elvis when fans threw underwear at him. Adam’s fans are paying homage to his charisma and sexiness, not orientation!  We love you Adam!

Comment by AdamAddict on 8/06/09 at 11:22 am

Your explanation doesn’t make sense either. What do you mean by “is different with Lambert because he has put his sexuality front and center. Sex is now part of Lambert’s act” Being sexy and sensual does not make sex part of your act. Do we say that Beounce makes sex part of her act??? Adam doesn’t talk about his sexuality except when asked. Reporters are the ones that bring it up all the time. He just wants to be an artist and an Amazing performer!! He is sexy and sensual when it gets his song across. He is beautiful and ethereal when that is the songs best catalyst (Starlight and Mad World). I think you are just rationalizing your very poorly written article and it, nor your explanation, make any sense.

Comment by Janis on 8/06/09 at 4:43 pm

People are people, human sexuality includes gay, straight, bisexual. People are people, live and let live.Adam Lambert is an intriguing, interesting, fascinating, honest, ccurageous, talented, creative, personable, charismatic, gracious, intelligent, articulate, person and outstanding singer performing artist, who is always gracious, responsible, dependable and born to be a superstar.

Comment by ianaleah on 8/08/09 at 3:03 am

This article is stupid.  What does his being gay have to do with anything.  George Michaels has sold 10 times the records as Kiss and he only put out 6 albums.  Oh and he’s gay.  The lead singer for Judes Priest….legend….Gay.  Oh and let’s not forget that little guy that the Queen of England knighted….Elton John….Gay and married to his partner…so what the f does being gay have to do with it.  Adam Lambert has more talent in his little finger than all the other idols or gene simmons combined.  He is already a star.

Comment by BarTGila on 8/08/09 at 10:11 am

I’m offended by your article.  All it does is slander Adam with Gene Simmons’ bigoted comments - so I guess those are your feelings as well?  How ignorant are you to pose a question with someone elses answer.  The crowds go wild when Adam goes on stage.  Shame on you.

Comment by Juli An on 8/09/09 at 2:05 pm

I’m so sorry I got directed to (and caught at) this blog. (I got here because I was sure there would be loads of praise and support for Adam and I could gloat with my fellow Jews-for-Adam on his remarkable success in spite of the odds.) Wow, am I angry!!! Sadly, the article is so misinformed (toys thrown on stage may spell the end of Adam’s career and Gene saw it coming..) that I had to read the comments to see if anyone else followed your drift and believed it. Whew, I’m not angry anymore. Thankfully, Danielle, you have a beautiful, liberal, forward-thinking readership, as offended as I. Danielle, please learn more about Adam before you hurl negativity on the stage of our favorite son. I wish you could take the article down. Gene’s words were so ill informed, so yesterday, so hateful I’m ashamed Adam (who is changing the world by his level of comfort with himself as a person) has to read this from his homies.

Comment by sherrie davidson on 8/09/09 at 7:49 pm

Right on Sherri. There is nothing to be accomplished with such negativity. Healing and freedom are positives. For this moment in time, we have an adorable voice. Let’s not waste the beauty of it all by focusing the ugly, intolerant side of the human heart.

Comment by Terry on 8/09/09 at 8:20 pm

I grew up in the U.K. 40 years ago I can remember women throwing underwear at Tom Jones ( though I was never a fan of his) you have an idea how old I am, Adam oozes sex appeal, does’nt even have to try.  God given talent and voice, knows how to please a crowd, gifted performer, the time has come, we’ve been waiting for a super star, Adams voice has moved me to tears, he is the only Idol that is worthy of the title, love him.

Comment by Janet on 8/09/09 at 10:35 pm

I was at the American Idol Concert in Hamilton, Ontario and somebody threw a dildo on the stage and Adam just kicked it right off the stage. His set was absolutely amazing and he was the only reason I even went the the Summer Tour. I am a huge fan and I always will be.

Comment by Allison on 8/23/09 at 12:35 am

I don’t care what Adam Lambert’s sexual orientation is, the dude is a STAR, he is so outrageously good and memorable he will be an iconic star on the same level as Elvis, the Beatles, etc. etc. and Johnny Cash was probably smiling in the afterlife when Adam performed “Ring of Fire” on Idol, that was fantastic.

Comment by Wedding Fortune Cookies on 11/10/09 at 12:25 pm

In my opinion, the most talented Idol since Kelley Clarkson! We look foreward to seeing more of you Adam and your really HOT boyfriend Drake!

Comment by Madonna on 11/10/09 at 9:00 pm

I dont know this man at all but I guess he is some kind of superstar.

Comment by comforter sets sale on 1/17/10 at 6:23 am

Yes, Adam is a superstar!  The best vocalist/performer to grace the entertainment scene in decades!  That he is also gorgeous, sweet, kind, extremely intelligent and articulate (the list goes on and on!) are also true.
