Hunting Nazis: the new Holocaust film

A new spate of Holocaust films are finally letting Jews have their revenge.

This comes after decades of Hollywood’s preferred Holocaust, in which Jews diligently parade to their deaths and evil Nazis escape to Canada. But lately, a handful of filmmakers are imagining a new ending. And this time, it’s the Nazis who are in danger.

In Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds,” Brad Pitt and his cadre of Jewish-American commandos are tasked with a Nazi killing spree.

The only problem is, with the world so accustomed to Jewish victimhood, no one’s sure how to receive this new fantasy.

Some critics are praising the film for being subversive. Others condemn it for rewriting history. Patrick Goldstein from the L.A. Times quoted one of the film’s stars, actor/director Eli Roth, who called the film “kosher porn”.

“It’s almost a deep sexual satisfaction of wanting to beat Nazis to death, an orgasmic feeling,” Roth explained to Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic. For his part, Goldberg criticized the film for its excessive brutality and wrote that torturing Nazis “doesn’t sound like the Jewish thing to do.”  Daniel Mendelsohn, who wrote the formidable tome, “The Lost” about his relatives who perished in the Holocaust, argued in Time that the film’s masterful accomplishment (or horrifying failure, depending on your outlook) is that it turns Jews into Nazis.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw named it a “WW2 shlocker...[that] is achtung-achtung-ach-mein-Gott atrocious.”

Next up is “This Must Be the Place,” written by an Italian duo that puts Sean Penn on the prowl for his father’s Nazi-killer. Penn will play an aging musician who trades in retirement for first-degree murder. (Apparently, Penn is exploring his Jewish side—he won an Oscar last February for playing the Jewish activist Harvey Milk and recently found himself lip-locked with Israeli-born actress Natalie Portman, who denied their fling.)

Whether or not these ideas gain further momentum remains to be seen. Rewriting history is no small feat. But the idea of a retroactive Jewish fantasy in which Nazis pay for their crimes is certainly welcome entertainment. After all, Hollywood itself was created by Jews who wanted to escape their pasts and live a better future.

I don’t think it’s true. The founders of Hollywood did it in a very Jewish perspective of subverting traditional morality of America and the barriers between the races.

Patrick, I haven’t yet seen Inglorious Basterds, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. I have read a great deal about it, including a substantial part of the script (which was leaked on the Internet over a year ago) and I found the script very compelling.

I promise to review it here when I get the chance to see it.

When is the U.S. going to chase slave-masters? I really think the Semitic-Euro media here points the finger at other nations and issues, only to hide their historical crimes. every bit of Amerikka’s wealth has Red and Black [Afrikan] blood on it. From the offsprings to the material items, investments, luxuries, jobs, etc…

The crime of slavocracy was far worse than that of the Jewish holocaust—as well as the extermination of the Indigenous “Indians,” here.

The Hollywood Jew?  Is there anything else in Hollywood, holding the reins of power I mean?

Jews in Hollywood routinely discriminate against Christians and should be prosecuted for it.  Jews have abused their temporary privilege of being allowed to live in Christian America, and should be prosecuted for their crimes and expelled as the criminals they are.

Jews must PAY for their crimes against the Christian populations which were foolish enough to allow them full rights in our tolerant societies.

How did the Jews repay us?  They DESTROYED our culture and our race through total criminality and warfare.  The Jews must be brought to justice for their crimes!

hey Danielle: nice post - but just FYI - LA TIMES’ patrick goldstein did not call it ‘kosher porn’ - he quoted the film’s star Eli Roth, who called it ‘kosher porn’ - looking forward to your coverage this week of the movie - it’s currently 10% of advance ticket sales on Fandango - best, harry

You’re right Harry, thanks for the correction. In fact, Eli Roth elaborated on what he meant as “kosher porn” in a recent Atlantic article by Jeffrey Goldberg about Quentin Tarantino.

Here it is:

The horror-movie director Eli Roth—his film Hostel is the most repulsively violent movie I’ve ever seen twice—plays a Basterd known as the “Bear Jew,” whose specialty is braining Germans with a baseball bat. Roth told me recently that Inglourious Basterds falls into a subgenre he calls “kosher porn.”

“It’s almost a deep sexual satisfaction of wanting to beat Nazis to death, an orgasmic feeling,” Roth said. “My character gets to beat Nazis to death. That’s something I could watch all day. My parents are very strong about Holocaust education. My grandparents got out of Poland and Russia and Austria, but their relatives did not.”

yeah, i saw that - eli roth loves controversy, eh? you have to see BASTERDS to disbelieve it - as it’s a one of a kind movie - can’t wait to read the JJ interview with Tarantino this week!
