Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Thursday described her stepping down as chair of the Democratic National Committee after leaked emails proved the DNC was in tank for Hillary Clinton during the Democratic presidential primary as making a sacrifice for the benefit of the team.
“This has been a difficult week, no question about it,” Wasserman Schultz said during an event hosted by the National Jewish Democratic Council in Philadelphia on Thursday. “Sometimes you have to take one for the team, and that’s okay. It’s okay.”
“I might not always win the day. I might not convince everybody that I’m right. But you can be damn sure I’m never gonna lose because I’ve been outworked,” an emotional Wasserman Schultz told the Jewish Democratic crowd. “That is a hallmark of our people: We persevere, we stay focused, we stay together, we lock arms, and we never forget where we came from.”
THe outgoing DNC chair called Donald Trump’s recent comments about Russia hacking the DNC emails “treasonous” and “unacceptable.”
On Thursday, Trump insisted he was only trying to be sarcastic. “Of course I’m being sarcastic,” Trump said in an interview with Fox N’ Friends. “You have 33,000 emails deleted, and the real problem is what was said on the emails from the Democratic National Convention.”
“I can personally attest to how not funny it is,” she said. “I am not kidding. We were hacked by Russian espionage organizations. And for a presidential candidate to encourage that to happen again, I mean, it’s treasonous, it’s seditious, it’s unacceptable.”
Wasserman Schultz, who received an award – a silver hanukiah – from the NJDC, said that after going home and winning her primary, “I am going to be right out there. As I am taking off one hat, I will put back on another.”
