I have known Debbie for 35 years, since we were on staff together at Camp Swig. No one knew her at that time on the West Coast, and her music was only beginning to be known nationally. Debbie loved kids, cared about them deeply, spoke and sang to their hearts and souls, mentored them and received herself even more than she gave. We wanted her to see us, and she did. She had a way of moving with childlike abandon into people’s hearts. She did that to me, as she understood no boundaries and wanted to be a central person in our lives, to be seen by us and appreciated for who she was. Her yearning was palpable, and the beauty she brought into the world through her music was a mild reflection of the beauty that flowed from a deep place within her. It is difficult to imagine the world without her.
