Mrs. Warren’s Profession

Antaeus, L.A.’s classical theater ensemble, presents a fully double-cast production of George Bernard Shaw’s penetrating and entertaining look at mothers, daughters and the idea of a “woman’s place.” Mrs. Warren has worked hard to provide a good life for her daughter. But when Vivie finds out the truth about her mother’s profession, sparks fly. Armed with wicked wit and astute insight, Shaw pits mother against daughter to expose the passionate societal struggles taking place beneath the polished veneer of Victorian society.

Shaw’s ultimate test of a mother-daughter relationship deftly depicts the universal conflict between the generations. At the same time, the play is a scathing critique of the restrictions placed upon women in Victorian society—one that continues to be fresh and relevant in today’s world. Always a champion of social reform, Shaw said he wrote the play “to draw attention to the truth that prostitution is caused, not by female depravity and male licentiousness, but simply by underpaying, undervaluing and overworking women so shamefully that the poorest of them are forced to resort to prostitution to keep body and soul together.” Modern parallels abound regarding both opportunities for women and society’s hypocrisy about money and respectability.

Mrs. Warren’s Profession opens on Thursday, March 14 and runs through April 21 with previews on March 7 through March 13. Tickets are $15-$34. THE ANTAEUS COMPANY is located at 5112 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood CA 91601. For reservations and information, call (818) 506-1983; www.Antaeus.org. New Old Friends

I've recently become close with Abe and Frank, two older guys in my neighborhood. At 90 and 88 respectively, they’re not the typical age of my other friends. At first I wasn’t sure if it was friendship. Maybe they were just humoring me or passing the time. Why would old people want to be friends with me, a 35-year-old?
