Szyk’s original illustrations for The Statute of Kalisz, a 13th century royal charter of privileges accorded to Polish Jews, will be displayed at the Feb. 9th symposium only.

Arthur Szyk was a Polish born illustrator who redirected his artistry during World War II into political drawings that unmasked the face of the Axis enemies. A model of the engaged artist—defending the rights of Jews against Nazi aggression and American apathy—Szyk became America’s leading political caricaturist of the 1940s and his work appeared in TIME, Esquire and Collier’s magazines, among many others.

The exhibit features many of the pieces that made him famous, and will incorporate themes of World War II, America, and Jewish Response.

Co-sponsored by the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies and the “1939” Club.

Filmmaker writes from experience for post-Holocaust drama ‘Mighty Fine’

Filmmaker Debbie Goodstein has taken to heart the adage, “Write what you know.” Her 1989 Holocaust documentary, “Voices From the Attic,” recounts her mother’s years of hiding in a garret where snow descended through slats in the roof, a baby died and food was scarce.

New Old Friends

I've recently become close with Abe and Frank, two older guys in my neighborhood. At 90 and 88 respectively, they’re not the typical age of my other friends. At first I wasn’t sure if it was friendship. Maybe they were just humoring me or passing the time. Why would old people want to be friends with me, a 35-year-old?
