Judeo Spanish: Survival in the Diaspora

Judeo-Spanish has evolved for more than five centuries since the expulsion of the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula.  This symposium looks to engage in dialogue to explore the multifaceted aspects of Diaspora through variable changes from the time of the Sephardic expulsion through the 21st century.  Keynote speakers are Liliana Benveniste and Marcelo Benveniste. ucLADINO is a a student run organization at UCLA dedicated to the learning and knowledge of the Judeo-Spanish language. Panelists will include graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

New Old Friends

I've recently become close with Abe and Frank, two older guys in my neighborhood. At 90 and 88 respectively, they’re not the typical age of my other friends. At first I wasn’t sure if it was friendship. Maybe they were just humoring me or passing the time. Why would old people want to be friends with me, a 35-year-old?
