INSIDE/OUTSIDE: Acting for Camera and Stage Kids and Teens Program
Want to ace the screen test, get the part in the school musical, be called back for the commercial, see yourself on camera? Want to make new friends, gain self-confidence and develop independent thinking? “It’s exciting to see theatre skills help young people blossom as creators and artists whether or not they have professional career intent,” says Playhouse Co-Artistic Director Chris DeCarlo. Kids 10 to 17 explore the world of acting in a whole new light as they learn to develop the inner life of the character, simultaneously gaining on-camera, audition and cold reading skills in these fun and challenging once-a-week six-week sessions. “She got the part at Disney and it’s all because of you!” says workshop mom and former Armani model Christina Silvers. Lots of on-camera work allows students to learn and grow as they watch themselves and their colleagues live and in play-back. Internationally acclaimed Actors’ Repertory Theatre artists lead the classes, using improvisation, theatre games, text and performance art to help members discover their artistic voice, expand communication and imagination skills, overcome competition fear and conquer the critic within. Students learn camera and stage terminology, study their performances on camera, and practice techniques that help them not only be dynamite on stage or screen, but excel in classroom participation, be confident in one-on-one personal conversations and learn to be creative problem-solvers. Inside/Outside is part of the Santa Monica Playhouse Education Conservatory Program whose alumni include Kate Hudson, Jason Ritter, Jason Segel, Shana Feste, Zoey Deschanel, Emily Deschanel, Rina Mimoun, Mickey Madden and Cami Anderson, Newark Superintendant of Schools.
