Actors’ Workshop Summer Session – For the Actor In Us All
“You make magic!” Connie Stevens tells director Chris DeCarlo, and you’ll find out why after only one 6-week session of Actors’ Workshop as you conquer the critic within, overcome competition fear, and have fun discovering your artist’s voice while unleashing your creative self in a unique theatre experience that gives you new insights into use of theatre to enhance communication, explore inter-personal relationships and manage the challenges of daily living. Now celebrating its 53rd anniversary, Actors’ Workshop at Santa Monica Playhouse is the oldest continually-running acting workshop in L.A. Founded in 1960 by actors Ted Roter, Gunsmoke’s James Arness and Eric Braeden of “TheYoung and the Restless” fame, it was ‘inherited’ by Playhouse Artistic Director DeCarlo in 1973 and is still personally taught by him Monday evenings throughout the year. Actress Julie Smith raves, “I always leave the workshop energized and ready to take on the acting world!” And performer Alexandra Lemus echoes, “He’s a wonderful instructor and has helped me grow a lot more than I thought possible. He’s awesome!” Actor/director/playwright DeCarlo has worked with thousands of performers, and been directly responsible for more than 250 world premiere productions. Recent credits include Doug Knott’s Last of the Knotts (Critic’s Choice! LA TIMES), Love in Bloom (Critic’s Pick of the Year! American Radio Network) and the critically acclaimed romantic comedy Raise Me Up. An astounding and empowering exploration of the acting process, the Actors’ Workshop method connects body, mind, and heart, combining physical theatre and improvisation in ways done nowhere else - offering skills which can be used by professional and non-professional, performer and non-performer alike. Small classes! Personal attention! Performance opportunities! Students come from all walks of life and have included Broadway actors and television personalities, athletes, therapists, engineers, architects, sculptors, poets, university professors, teachers, a neurosurgeon and a Los Angeles District Attorney. Alumni of Mr. DeCarlo’s method include producer/writer Rina Mimoun (Gilmore Girls, Mistresses), Teri Nunn (Berlin), Newark Superintendent of Schools Cami Anderson and Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden, who hails the process as “Great in so many ways!” Enrollment is now open for the Summer session (July 15 – August 19, 2013). Acceptance is by personal interview only.
