“Great in so many ways!” exclaims Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden. It’s Chris DeCarlo’s empowerment method, Actors’ Workshop (AW) at Santa Monica Playhouse, helping people from all walks of life conquer the critic within, overcome competition fear, and have fun discovering their artist’s voice while unleashing the creative self in a unique theatre experience that gives new insights into the use of theatre to enhance communication, explore inter-personal relationships and manage the challenges of daily living. It’s a great tool for actors at all levels of proficiency, augmenting audition, cold reading and on-the-spot decision-making techniques (“I always leave the workshop energized and ready to take on the acting world!” – actress Julie Smith), and an empowering creative experience for anyone who would like to boost their self-confidence and power up their ability to speak up and speak out.
Founded in 1960 by actors Ted Roter, Gunsmoke’s James Arness and Eric Braeden of “TheYoung and the Restless” fame, it was ‘inherited’ by Playhouse Artistic Director DeCarlo in 1973 and is still personally taught by him Monday evenings throughout the year. Performer Alexandra Lemus raves, “He’s a wonderful instructor and has helped me grow a lot more than I thought possible. He’s awesome!” Connie Stevens exclaims, “You make magic!” Actor/director/playwright DeCarlo has worked with thousands of performers, directly responsible for more than 250 world premiere productions. Recent credits include Doug Knott’s Last of the Knotts (Critic’s Choice! LA TIMES), Love in Bloom (Critic’s Pick of the Year! American Radio Network) and Jerry Mayer’s acclaimed Aspirin & ELEPHANTS..
An astounding and empowering exploration of the acting process, the AW method connects body, mind, and heart, combining physical theatre and improvisation in ways done nowhere else - offering skills which can be used by professional and non-professional, performer and non-performer alike. Small classes! Personal attention! Students come from all walks of life and have included Broadway actors and television personalities, athletes, therapists, engineers, architects, sculptors, poets, university professors, teachers, a neurosurgeon and a Los Angeles District Attorney. Enrollment is now open for Fall Session II (Nov 4 – Dec 16, 2013). Acceptance is by interview and includes free personal consultation and evaluation by one of LA’s foremost directors.
Alumni of Mr. DeCarlo’s method include producer/writer Rina Mimoun (Gilmore Girls, Mistresses), Teri Nunn (Berlin), Newark Superintendent of Schools Cami Anderson and Gadi Dechter, deputy director of the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning at the U.S. Commerce Department.
