Place: Leo Baeck Temple, 1300 N. Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049
Date: Saturday, April 27, 2013
Time: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

This text study and writing workshop looks into the Judaic textual tradition at people who pray to die. From some of the most famous people in the Bible to some rather obscure ones in rabbinic literature, praying to die seems more common than we might otherwise presume. Some pray for their own deaths; some pray for other people to die. Texts will be presented in English and Hebrew. Through careful study of these classic texts we will discover diverse motivations for such prayers, interrogate the conditions when these prayers are uttered, examine what is actually said, and reflect on those prayers. The workshop concludes with opportunities for participants to think about and begin composing their own prayers for death – be it their own or for others.
