“Chai Lights”

The Hebrew word “chai” — meaning “life” — translates numerically to 18, exactly the number of years the L.A. Jewish Symphony (LAJS) has been in existence. The ensemble is celebrating with an evening of selections favored by their conductor and founder Dr. Noreen Green and spotlighting concertmaster Mark Kashper, principal cellist Barry Gold and principal clarinetist Zinovy Goro. A U.S. premiere — Klezmopolitan Suite by former member of the klezmer group Kol Simcha Niki Reiser — crowns the first half which includes fiery Spanish sonorities, dark laments of the Exodus and a riotous folk festival. The newly formed Jewish Community Children’s Choir, directed by Dr. Michelle Willner, accompanies entertainer Sam Glaser in the second half, after intermission. The concert concludes with surprise guest artists representing the 18-year history of LAJS.
