Ever watch the fire department take apart a car with saws and the Jaws-of-Life? Want to get a free Child ID (photo and fingerprint) for your young children? Come to the Valley’s largest Disaster Preparedness Fair on Oct. 5.  We’ll have all that, and much more at this free Whole Community Preparedness event.

There’s so much to see and do at the Fair.  Have a seat in the Shakey-Quakey Schoolhouse earthquake simulator. Learn about free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes, and how CERT can prepare you for emergencies and disasters.  Get preparedness information from the Red Cross, the Gas Company, the LADWP, and others.  Volunteer emergency response organizations like Citizens Emergency Mobile Patrol (CEMP) and Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will be on hand.  Learn about preparing your pets for disasters and emergencies. Walk through the LAPD Command Vehicle.  There will be an amateur radio (ham) station (call sign: K6D), and representatives from various public service agencies such as CHP, LAPD, LA Sheriff’s Department, animal rescue organizations, and emergency preparedness product vendors.

There will be various demonstrations during Fair hours, including the Jaws-of-Life; a children’s Safety Puppet Show; LADWP’s electric diorama (a live demonstration of electrical safety—with sparks!); practice sidewalk CPR; and how to properly use a fire extinguisher to put out a real fire. Also, there will be drawings throughout the
Fair, including an EP backpack filled with emergency supplies.

The first 500 families that register or check in at the Fair will receive a free Preparedness Kit containing essential supplies and information. Around 11:00 am there’ll be free food (until it runs out). For further information, please email EPrep.sfv@gmail.com. There is no charge to attend the Fair, and parking is free behind the Salvation Army Family Store.
