Sharansky Thrills Nessah

More than 300 guests of the Nessah Cultural Center in Beverly Hills welcomed Israeli Knesset Member Natan Sharansky with applause in a lecture given by him on Sunday, Jan. 22. Sharansky, a former Jewish political prisoner held in Russia, spoke about the growing reemergence of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel rhetoric in Europe and the United States.

"We are now in a time were there is a new struggle against Jews and the State of Israel in the West, one of the primary sources of anti-Semitism in the world are in the campuses of the United States where it is being taught as the truth," Sharansky said.

His lecture was followed by a brief question-and-answer period where audience members asked Sharansky about the nuclear threat of Iran and Palestinian terrorism directed against Israel.

Matloffs Honored

Four generations of vision, support and the leadership of Martha and Dr. Jack Matloff and their family were recognized at a special concert on Feb. 21 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, which benefited Shaare Zedek Medical Center's Ruth and Hyman Matloff Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The event, which honored a decade of outstanding medical treatment at The West Coast Region of the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, featured the Jerusalem Chamber Philharmonic.

Dr. Matloff is the chairman emeritus of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and has served as the chairman of that department as well as the President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

The Ruth and Hyman Matloff Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is internationally renown for its extraordinary achievements in adult cardiac surgery, coronary bypass surgery, and the treatment of valvular disease for congestive heart failure. In the past decade, Dr. Matloff has helped Shaare Zedek raise more than $10 million for the founding of the Ruth and Hyman Matloff Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as its continued funding. "Dr. Matloff has affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of Los Angelinos, Israelis and others from all over the world." said Joyce Eisenberg Keefer, community leader, philanthropist and event co-chair.

According to Jack Bendheim, national president of the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center "Each of the event's co-chairs and committee members owes a life to Jack Matloff, either his or her own, or that of a loved one."
